most common types we聽see consist of a tower section located聽on a fixed base with a jib attached to聽the tower via a slew聽 mechanism. This聽mechanism allows the crane operator,聽through a gearing arrangement, to聽slew the jib around the construction聽site and then hold the jib in position via聽a slew brake. In normal operation, the聽slew brake is always engaged and the聽operator, through his control inputs,聽disengages the brake and moves the聽jib to the required position. The brake聽is then re-engaged until the next聽control input.</p> <p>When the crane is left unattended, it is聽usually a requirement to leave the slew聽brake disengaged. This allows the jib聽to move freely and weathervane with聽the wind. Allowing the jib to move聽freely greatly reduces the stress聽imposed on the tower section and jib聽section. However, if this brake is engaged in a period of high wind, the stress imposed upon the structure can lead to failure. This聽should include measures to routinely聽check that the operators understand聽and are following the instructions聽provided.</li><li>Undertake periodic checks that the聽buildings under construction, other聽cranes or high reach plant are not聽preventing the crane from free聽slewing. Detailed聽requirements and checklists are聽included in BS7121-2-5, the Lifting聽Operation and Lifting Equipment聽Regulations (LOLER) and the Provision聽and Use of Work Equipment (PUWER)聽Regulations, as well as detailed guides聽produced by the Construction Plant-Hire Association (CPA) including聽TCIG-0801.</p> <p>Pre-use checks, regular in-service聽inspections and maintenance checks聽are essential and need to be recorded.聽Key aspects to check during聽maintenance include (but are not聽limited to):</p> <ul><li>general condition of structures (e.g.聽fatigue cracks), fastenings, ties and聽machinery聽</li><li>operation of alarms, warning lights,聽indicators, motion limiters and聽 cab聽accessories</li><li>presence of documentation and聽warning signs</li><li>slewing mechanism, control gear,聽safety devices, cables and pulley聽block</li></ul> <p>In addition to a PPM system, cranes聽also require periodic thorough聽examinations as prescribed by LOLER.聽The thorough examinations would聽need
