He investigated light scattering from the lunar surface and developed the curve of growth method, which allowed more advanced studies of stellar atmospheres. While he was imprisoned during World War II, he taught astronomy classes for his fellow inmates. His 1937 three-volume book on the visible physical phenomena of nature, Light and Color in the Outdoors, remains popular among scientists, and is also cherished by hikers and cinematographers.
