Die Niederlande gewannen im Münchner Olympiastadion die UEFA-Europameisterschaft und der PSV Eindhoven triumphierte als dritter Klub der Niederlande im Pokal der europäischen Meistervereine. Somit gelang es der Mannschaft von Guus Hiddink in dieser Saison neben Meisterschaft und Pokal auch die Königsklasse zu gewinnen, ein Kunststück, das bislang nur Celtic FC und AFC Ajax zustande gebracht hatten.</p> <p><strong>Talentierte Truppe</strong><br/>Der PSV hatte Talente im Überfluss, man denke nur an Torhüter Hans van Breukelen, Abwehrspieler Ronald Koeman, die Mittelfeldspieler Sören Lerby und Gerald Vanenburg und Stürmer Wim Kieft - riss seine Fans aber nicht vom Hocker. Der PSV gewann von seinen neun Spielen im Verlauf des Turniers gerade drei, nämlich gegen Galatasaray SK und zwei Mal gegen SK Rapid Wien, aber keines mehr nach der zweiten Runde. Gegen den FC Girondins de Bordeaux und Real Madrid CF setzten sich die Holländer im Viertel- bzw. Halbfinale nach jeweils zwei Unentschieden nur dank der Auswärtstorregel durch, in einem ausgesprochen unattraktiven Finale gegen SL Benfica musste die Elfmeterlotterie entscheiden.</p> <p><strong>Van Breukelen als Held</strong><br/>Für die dramatischen Momente in dieser Saison sorgte da schon eher Madrid, das den SSC Napoli, den FC Porto und, erstmals überhaupt, den FC Bayern München aus dem Rennen warf. Während die "Merengues" ihren siebten Titel in der Königsklasse anstrebten, hoffte Benfica auf seinen dritten Erfolg. Die Mannschaft aus Lissabon setzte sich gegen KS Partizani, AGF Århus, RSC Anderlecht und den FC Steaua Bucuresti durch.
