It is distinct from the Most Holy Place, or the Holy of Holies, which housed the Ark of the Covenant and was entered only once a year by the high priest on the Day of Atonement (<a href="/leviticus/16-2.htm">Leviticus 16:2-34</a>).<br><br><b>Biblical Description and Function</b><br><br>The Outer Sanctuary is described in detail in the books of Exodus and 1 Kings, where God provides Moses and Solomon with specific instructions for its construction and furnishings. In the tabernacle, the Holy Place was a rectangular room measuring 20 cubits long, 10 cubits wide, and 10 cubits high (<a href="/exodus/26-15.htm">Exodus 26:15-30</a>). In Solomon's Temple, the dimensions were larger, measuring 40 cubits long, 20 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high (<a href="/1_kings/6-2.htm">1 Kings 6:2-17</a>).<br><br>The Holy Place contained three primary pieces of furniture: the Table of Showbread, the Golden Lampstand, and the Altar of Incense.
