These competitions offer athletes the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. <br/><br/> Their first International Special Olympics Games were held at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois. 1,000 athletes from 26 states and Canada participated in track and field and swimming events. The 2015 Games will be held in Los Angeles and are expected to draw 7,000 athletes from 170 countries and include 3,000 coaches, 30,000 volunteers and more than 500,000 spectators. Special Olympics has forever changed the world's perception of people with intellectual disabilities. <br/><br/> <strong>Special Olympics & Publix</strong> <br/> Publix's relationship with Special Olympics began in 1972 when founder George Jenkins provided a grant from our Foundation to send Special Olympics Florida athletes to the Second Special Olympics National Games in Los Angeles. <br/><br/> Our commitment continues today by providing volunteers for Special Olympics competitions, serving as the premier sponsor of the Florida Law Enforcement Torch Run and by offering our customers and associates the opportunity to support athletes across our five, soon to be six, state operating area by purchasing paper torches.
