(Getty Images)</p></div> <p>Fact: There is little upside to fighting Malik Scott.</p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">Win, and you have beaten an unknown American who, despite an unbeaten record, has no fan base and no buzz around him. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">Lose, and you will add an ‘L’ to your resume in the aftermath of a boring fight. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">And most heavyweights <em>will</em> lose. At 6’4” and equipped with a steady jab and hard to hit chin, Scott is as technical as any other big man in boxing. In February, Main Events thought it was a good idea to match rising heavyweight contender Czar Glazkov with Scott as the main event of a show on NBC Sports Network. In a fight that featured little action, Scott boxed Glazkov to a draw, even as some ringside reporters — including this one — believed Scott won fairly easily. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">That’s why it was surprising when promoter Frank Warren signed up Scott to fight Dereck “Del Boy” Chisora at Wembley Arena in London on Saturday night. Chisora needs a win. He has lost three of his last four fights, including a crushing knockout loss to David Haye last year. Chisora is an appealing heavyweight opponent — he talks tough and comes straight forward, a style that lends itself to entertaining fights — but there are only so many losses he can take before his marketability starts to slide. And against Scott, Chisora has an opponent who could easily box circles around him. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">“Malik’s in tremendous shape,” said Scott’s trainer, Jesse Reid. “He’s my prize racehorse and he’s ready for Chisora. His strongest assets are his speed, footwork and intelligence. He knows how to stay calm under pressure. I’m more than confident. I’ve trained many world champions in my 42 years in boxing and some of the biggest names in the sport, but a world heavyweight champion has eluded me. But I believe I’ve got one in Malik.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">That may be wishful thinking. Scott’s sleep-inducing style isn’t going to have either Klitschko brother clamoring to face him, which means the only way he will get a shot is to position himself as the mandatory challenger. And Scott (35-0-1) isn’t ranked in the top 10 by any of the major organizations. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">Still, beating Chisora (16-4) would undoubtedly move Scott up. Chisora, however, doesn’t expect that to happen. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">“I’m happy now that I’ve looked into his eyes and I see that the boy is scared,” Chisora, said. “What counts is what happens in the ring on Saturday, and I’m going to do a real good job on this boy and pack him back off to America, defeated.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">Added Chisora’s trainer, Don Charles, “”Scott looks in great shape, which is good news for us, as it will be all the better when Del beats him. Trust me, Del is in the best shape of his career and Scott will not be able to stand the heat that Del is going to dish out. Scott has not met anyone like Del and he’s caught him at the wrong time. Del is hungry and determined as he knows he can’t afford to lose this fight.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">Tough talk from a Scott opponent is nothing new. Being able to back it up would be. </span></p> <p style="text-align:right;"><em><strong>–Chris Mannix</strong></em></p> <div id="jp-post-flair" class="sharedaddy sd-like-enabled sd-sharing-enabled"></div> <br/> </div> </div> <div class="post-bottom"> <li>Published On <span>Jul 19, 2013</span></li> <li id="right"><span><div><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/07/19/malik-scott-vs-dereck-chisora/#respond" title="Comment on Undefeated Malik Scott hoping win vs. Dereck Chisora will bolster his cause"><span data-lf-article-id="5390" data-lf-site-id="308691" class="livefyre-commentcount">0</span></a></div></span></li> </div> </div> <div class="post-wrap"> <div class="post-top"></div> <div class="post" id="post-5384"> <h1><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/07/18/lucas-matthyssee-vs-danny-garcia-floyd-mayweather-undercard/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse to fight on Mayweather-Alvarez undercard">Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse to fight on Mayweather-Alvarez undercard</a></h1> <div class="category"> <a href="/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/category/boxing/">Boxing</a> | <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/07/18/lucas-matthyssee-vs-danny-garcia-floyd-mayweather-undercard/#comment"><span class="js-kit-comments-count" exclude-sources="Twitter" include-sources="Comments" uniq="/2013/07/18/lucas-matthyssee-vs-danny-garcia-floyd-mayweather-undercard/"></span> Comments </a> </div> <div class="entry"> <div id="cnnSCFontButtons"> <div id="cnnSCFontLabel"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize.gif"/></div> <div id="cnnSCFontMinusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('default'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_d.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_l.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"></div> <div id="cnnSCFontPlusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('LargeFont'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_d.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_l.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"></div> </div> <div id="attachment_5385" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 610px"><img class="size-full wp-image-5385 " alt="Lucas Matthysse celebrates after his TKO victory over Lamont Peterson in May. (Al Bello/Getty Images)</p></div> <p>Unified junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia will defend his titles against Argentinean knockout artist Lucas Matthysse on September 14th on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather-Saul Alvarez pay per view, Golden Boy Promotions announced on Thursday. The addition of Garcia-Matthysse creates one of the most anticipated cards in pay-per-view history.</p> <p>The hype for Garcia-Matthysse has been building since May, when Matthysse — with Garcia in attendance — stopped titleholder Lamont Peterson in the third round in Atlantic City. It was the sixth straight knockout win for Matthysse (34-2), who hasn’t lost since a 2011 defeat to Devon Alexander. The win setup the showdown with Garcia (26-0), arguably the top fighter at 140-pounds.</p> <p>“I’m glad I finally get a chance to fight Danny Garcia,” Matthysse said. “This is the fight that the entire boxing world — especially my country Argentina — and I wanted. I want to thank my promoters Golden Boy Promotions and Mario Arano for making this fight possible. On September 14th, I will show the world that I am the best 140 pound fighter on the planet.”</p> <p>Garcia has quickly emerged as one of the biggest stars in boxing. After decisioning Erik Morales to win a vacant title in 2012, Garcia followed it up with a spectacular knockout of Amir Khan four months later. He knocked out Morales in a rematch last November and in April outpointed former titleholder Zab Judah.</p> <p>According to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, Garcia pushed hard for a Matthysse matchup.</p> <p>“This is the fight I wanted and the fight that I asked for,” Garcia said. “That is why I’m so happy this fight has been made and will be a part of this huge event. I’m more confident than ever in my abilities and I’m going to show it on September 14th. (Scott Heavey/Getty Images)</p></div> <p>Some quick jabs…</p> <p>• Raise your hand if you are surprised that featherweight prospect Gary Russell turned down a fight with Daniel Ponce de Leon. No one? I thought so. Ponce de Leon, according to Steve Kim at MaxBoxing.com, was ready and willing to take the fight, only to be told that Russell (22-0), who has not fought since March because of a hand injury, preferred to take an easier fight. That’s not particularly surprising because Russell’s entire career has been easy fights. I’m as big a fan of Russell’s talent as anyone, but until he faces an opponent who actually wants to fight back, he doesn’t belong on premium television.</p> <p>• Neither, of course, does Deontay Wilder, who continues his run through bums when he faces Siarhei Liakhovich, last seen getting flattened by Bryant Jennings 18 months ago and knocked out by Robert Helenius the year before that, in August. Showtime will broadcast it. Pathetic.</p> <p>• The late Emanuel Steward would have been 69 this week. If you missed it, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kSw_RCqrMg" target="_blank">here is the tribute I shot of him for Epix</a>.</p> <p>Last year, Tony Thompson thought his career was over. It was in Switzerland, and Thompson had just suffered a sixth round knockout defeat to Wladimir Klitschko, his second straight loss to the unified champion. I was part of the broadcast team for Epix that night, and I remember what Thompson told me clearly: I still think I can beat anyone but Wladimir, he said, but if I can’t beat him, is it worth continuing? Apparently, it is. Thompson’s knockout win over David Price on Saturday was his second straight knockout of Price, a prized prospect seen by some as the heir apparent to Wladimir Klitschko. It made me remember: Since 2000, Thompson has lost two fights, both to the man considered the best heavyweight of this generation.</p> <p>At 41, Thompson clearly still has some fight left in him. He’s awkward, crafty and has a good chin. He wants a title shot with Vitali Klitschko, but that’s not going to happen. However Thompson has earned another big fight — and another big payday — and I could see some kind of premium network televised fight against a young prospect like Bryant Jennings or Deontay Wilder at some point later this year.</p> <p>• I think promoter Frank Warren made a big mistake matching heavyweight Dereck Chisora with Malik Scott on July 20. Chisora is trying to rebuild his career after back to back losses to Vitali Klitschko and David Haye, and Scott is a nightmare. He is the worst kind of combination, incredibly dull and incredibly skilled, the kind of fighter who impresses judges while putting an audience to sleep. Scott was robbed of a win against Czar Glazkov in February, and is very likely to box circles around Chisora later this month.</p> <p>• Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer refuted reports of a deal being struck for a fight between Lucas Matthysse and Danny Garcia, telling me via email that neither a deal nor a date had been agreed on. I continue to hear from industry sources that there is a strong possibility the fight could land on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez on September 14. If so, that will rank as one of the best cards in history.</p> <p>• One reason Matthysse-Garcia could move off the originally planned September 7th date: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is scheduled to return on that date. Though judging by <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://www.badlefthook.com/2013/7/7/4500374/photo-julio-cesar-chavez-jr-looking-very-heavy-two-months-out-from" target="_blank">recent photos of Chavez</a> it’s fair to wonder exactly what weight class he plans to fight in.</p> <p style="text-align:right;"><i><strong>– Chris Mannix</strong><br/> </i></p> <div id="jp-post-flair" class="sharedaddy sd-like-enabled sd-sharing-enabled"></div> <br/> </div> </div> <div class="post-bottom"> <li>Published On <span>Jul 11, 2013</span></li> <li id="right"><span><div><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/07/11/quick-jabs-gary-russell-tony-thompson-david-price/#comments" title="Comment on Quick Jabs: Gary Russell needs tougher fights, Tony Thompson still has it, more"><span data-lf-article-id="5369" data-lf-site-id="308691" class="livefyre-commentcount">0</span></a></div></span></li> </div> </div> <div class="post-wrap"> <div class="post-top"></div> <div class="post" id="post-5365"> <h1><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/07/11/marco-huck-vs-firat-arslan-rematch/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to 10 months later, Marco Huck and Firat Arslan to fight again">10 months later, Marco Huck and Firat Arslan to fight again</a></h1> <div class="category"> <a href="/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/category/boxing/">Boxing</a> | <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/07/11/marco-huck-vs-firat-arslan-rematch/#comment"><span class="js-kit-comments-count" exclude-sources="Twitter" include-sources="Comments" uniq="/2013/07/11/marco-huck-vs-firat-arslan-rematch/"></span> Comments </a> </div> <div class="entry"> <div id="cnnSCFontButtons"> <div id="cnnSCFontLabel"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize.gif"/></div> <div id="cnnSCFontMinusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('default'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_d.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_l.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"></div> <div id="cnnSCFontPlusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('LargeFont'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_d.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_l.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"></div> </div> <div id="attachment_5367" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 610px"><img class="size-full wp-image-5367" alt="Marco Huck (left) still thinks that he defeated Firat Arslan when they fought in November. (Joe Camporeale/USA TODAY Sports)</p></div> <p>MASHANTUCKET, Conn. — <em>Three thoughts from WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s third round destruction of Matthew Macklin…</em><br/> <strong></strong></p> <p><strong>There are body shots, and there was that: </strong>If you’re a young fighter who thinks headhunting is how you score knockouts, save the footage of this fight. In the third round, after backing up and battering Macklin up for most of the first two, Golovkin (27-0) delivered one of the most savage body shots in boxing history, a perfectly placed left hook that was both precise and savage, and kept Macklin on the mat long after he was counted out.</p> <p>Make no mistake: Macklin is a live opponent. He gave Sergio Martinez all he could ask for in a loss last year and was coming off a first-round knockout win over veteran Joachim Alcine. But he had no chance. Golovkin’s pressure was swarming, and Macklin was never given a chance to fight back.</p> <p>“It was an easy fight for me,” Golovkin said. “He never hurt me. I felt great in the ring. I want to fight again as soon as possible. Any top fighter, any champion, any belt holder, anywhere.”</p> <p>Said Macklin, “He’s the best I ever fought. He never let me get started.”<br/> <strong></strong></p> <p><strong>Anyone still think it’s hype? </strong>There had been this bizarre belief among some on the Internet that, perhaps, Golovkin was more hype than substance. Maybe it was his opponents—no superstars on that resume yet—or perhaps it was the way HBO has anointed him as its next star. Regardless, that debate should be over. The narrative tomorrow will be Golovkin’s power, and it should. “He has clubbing, solid power,” Macklin said. “You can feel the weight of every punch he throws.”</p> <p>But Golovkin is so much more than just a power puncher. He fought 355 amateur fights, and won 350 of them. He is methodical, technical, accurate with every punch he throws. There is no wasted motion, no wasted energy. He is a complete fighter.</p> <p>“People talk about punching power,” Andre Ward said. “He is always in position to punch. It’s from that Soviet system. He has a strong base, strong foundation. He puts a lot of pressure on people, and it starts with his feet. He gets into position, then is able to unload the big shot.”<br/> <strong></strong></p> <p><strong>Who’s next? Anyone? Bueller? </strong>Think any middleweight is eager to get in with Golovkin? After the fight, Golovkin was asked about Sergio Martinez, the 160-pound division’s money man who is out for the rest of the year with multiple injuries. Golovkin was all for it. Lou DiBella, Martinez’s promoter, was not.</p> <p>“It’s not that its out of the question,” DiBella said. “But he’s not going to come off a 14-month layoff and fight this animal.”</p> <p>Fortunately for Golovkin, he is going to start attracting some top opponents, thanks to HBO’s exposure. Exposure means money, and Golovkin’s license fees will continue to rise. Top Rank’s Bob Arum said he is open to a fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and IBF titleholder Daniel Geale—who fights on HBO in August—is another possibility. Even Ward is now warming to it; he told me after the fight that he has no problem fighting Golovkin, but said Golovkin’s team “doesn’t want it right now.”</p> <p>In short: Golovkin is going to start getting bigger fights. And that’s good news for everybody.</p> <p style="text-align:right;"><em><strong>– Chris Mannix</strong></em></p> <div id="jp-post-flair" class="sharedaddy sd-like-enabled sd-sharing-enabled"></div> <br/> </div> </div> <div class="post-bottom"> <li>Published On <span>Jun 30, 2013</span></li> <li id="right"><span><div><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/06/30/three-thoughts-gennady-golovkin-brutalizes-matthew-macklin/#respond" title="Comment on Three Thoughts: Gennady Golovkin brutalizes Matthew Macklin"><span data-lf-article-id="5342" data-lf-site-id="308691" class="livefyre-commentcount">0</span></a></div></span></li> </div> </div> <div class="post-wrap"> <div class="post-top"></div> <div class="post" id="post-5309"> <h1><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/06/23/three-thoughts-broner-stops-malignaggi-in-brooklyn/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to Three Thoughts: Adrien Broner beats Paulie Malignaggi in a split decision">Three Thoughts: Adrien Broner beats Paulie Malignaggi in a split decision</a></h1> <div class="category"> <a href="/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/category/boxing/">Boxing</a> | <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/06/23/three-thoughts-broner-stops-malignaggi-in-brooklyn/#comment"><span class="js-kit-comments-count" exclude-sources="Twitter" include-sources="Comments" uniq="/2013/06/23/three-thoughts-broner-stops-malignaggi-in-brooklyn/"></span> Comments </a> </div> <div class="entry"> <div id="cnnSCFontButtons"> <div id="cnnSCFontLabel"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize.gif"/></div> <div id="cnnSCFontMinusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('default'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_d.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_l.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"></div> <div id="cnnSCFontPlusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('LargeFont'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_d.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_l.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"></div> </div> <div id="attachment_5310" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 620px"><img class="size-full wp-image-5310" alt="Adrien Broner didn't dominate his fight on Saturday, but he did more than enough to prevail. [Al Bello/Getty Images]</p></div> <p>NEW YORK — Three thoughts on Adrien Broner’s split decision win over Paulie Malignaggi:</p> <p><strong>1. Competitive fight, good decision: </strong>Coming into the fight, Malignaggi was a significant underdog. He had a title, but his best days are behind him, and even then, he never quite reached an elite level. Broner is on his way there. Malignaggi was the aggressor, throwing a high volume of punches, many of which Broner absorbed into his arms. Broner was surprisingly inactive, preferring to potshot Malignaggi while Malignaggi punched himself out. In the second half of the fight, Malignaggi appeared to slow down. Broner’s power—despite Malignaggi insisting that “girls hit harder than him”—clearly had an impact. Neither fighter appeared in danger of being knocked out, but Broner’s heavy shots were a factor. Maliganggi’s were not.</p> <p>Malignaggi was upset with the decision, particularly the 117-111 score—the same score SI.com finished with—submitted by judge Tom Schreck. But though Malignaggi put in a pretty good performance and can still be a factor at welterweight, Broner was clearly the better fighter—and the winner.</p> <p><strong>2. Broner’s rise stalls: </strong>No question, Broner won the fight. But did he distinguish himself doing it? Broner fought 30-45 seconds per round, enough to outclass Malignaggi but against some of the top fighters at 140 and 147 pounds, Broner could run into some problems. There is no doubting Broner’s talent. The shoulder-roll defense, perfected by Floyd Mayweather, who watched from ringside, is a major weapon. It’s tough to hit Broner clean, and his superior speed, power and precision make him as dangerous as anyone in or around his weight class. But younger, faster, more elusive fighters will find ways to take advantage of his reluctance to engage as much as he could.</p> <p>“I’m 32, I don’t think he would have beaten a 25-year-old Paulie Malignaggi,” Malignaggi said. “He’s got some talent, but he’s not a guy with the talent to carry the sport.”</p> <p><strong>3. A true heel is born: </strong>Let’s be honest: Broner can be insufferable. He came to the ring rapping, with his whole team decked out in gold robes. He spent the entire fight talking to Malignaggi, mocking him for not being fast enough to hit him. And after the fight he continued yapping, continued to push the notion that he stole Malignaggi’s girlfriend from him. Broner is young, just 23, but that kind of behavior is a turn-off, evidenced by the cacophony of boos that rained on him during a postfight interview.</p> <p>“The kid is not an example for anyone to look up to,” Malignaggi said. “He’s not a good person.”</p> <p>Indeed, Broner’s behavior is unbearable … but it could be smart. No one this side of the WWE likes a heel as much as boxing, and there is plenty of evidence that bad boys—most notably Mayweather—make money. “Being disliked is as powerful a sales tool as being liked … sometimes more,” tweeted promoter and former HBO executive Lou DiBella, and he’s right. Broner’s ratings on HBO were enormous, and he is walking (rapping?) down a Mayweather-like path, where more fans will watch to see him lose than win. But as Mayweather has proven, it doesn’t matter why you watch, as long as you do.</p> <p style="text-align:right;">—<em> <strong>Chris Mannix</strong></em></p> <div id="jp-post-flair" class="sharedaddy sd-like-enabled sd-sharing-enabled"></div> <br/> </div> </div> <div class="post-bottom"> <li>Published On <span>Jun 23, 2013</span></li> <li id="right"><span><div><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/06/23/three-thoughts-broner-stops-malignaggi-in-brooklyn/#comments" title="Comment on Three Thoughts: Adrien Broner beats Paulie Malignaggi in a split decision"><span data-lf-article-id="5309" data-lf-site-id="308691" class="livefyre-commentcount">0</span></a></div></span></li> </div> </div> <div class="post-wrap"> <div class="post-top"></div> <div class="post" id="post-5294"> <h1><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/06/21/nathan-cleverly-sergey-kovalev-boxing/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to Nathan Cleverly to defend title against undefeated Sergey Kovalev">Nathan Cleverly to defend title against undefeated Sergey Kovalev</a></h1> <div class="category"> <a href="/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/category/boxing/">Boxing</a> | <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/06/21/nathan-cleverly-sergey-kovalev-boxing/#comment"><span class="js-kit-comments-count" exclude-sources="Twitter" include-sources="Comments" uniq="/2013/06/21/nathan-cleverly-sergey-kovalev-boxing/"></span> Comments </a> </div> <div class="entry"> <div id="cnnSCFontButtons"> <div id="cnnSCFontLabel"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize.gif"/></div> <div id="cnnSCFontMinusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('default'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_d.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_l.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"></div> <div id="cnnSCFontPlusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('LargeFont'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_d.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_l.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"></div> </div> <div id="attachment_5295" class="wp-caption alignnone" style="width: 610px"><img class="size-full wp-image-5295 " alt="Nathan Cleverly successfully defended his WBO title against Robin Krasniqi in April. The fight will be part of a split site tripleheader broadcast on HBO.</p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">Kovalev-Cleverly will be the co-main event for HBO’s card headlined by IBF middleweight titleholder Daniel Geale’s defense against Darren Barker.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">“At this point, we are putting the finishing touches on the contracts,” Duva said. “Sergey is very excited to get the chance to win his first world title on August 17th in Wales. This cannot help but be a non-stop, all action brawl. The real winners will be the fans who get to watch this great fight in Wales, on HBO, Box Nation and throughout the rest of the world, including Sergey’s home country of Russia.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">Kovalev (21-0) is one of the fastest rising stars in the light heavyweight division. On Monday, the IBF ruled that Kovalev (21-0) was the mandatory challenger for titleholder Bernard Hopkins. But Kovalev’s promoter, Main Events, was already deep into negotiations with Cleverly, a fight that HBO wanted to buy. Though Kovalev publicly expressed a desire to fight Hopkins, he decided the chance to fight for a world title immediately and build a relationship with HBO was too important to pass up. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">“My goal has always been to win the world title as soon as possible,” Kovalev said. “So I decided to take the first opportunity that was offered to me. I have dreamed for many years about fighting on HBO. I look forward to going to Wales to fight with Cleverly and I congratulate him for accepting this challenge.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">HBO is preparing to make a significant investment in Kovalev. According to a source, HBO’s cameras will follow Kovalev for a “Two Days” special that will air after his fight. Though Duva said there were no guarantees made for any further fights, there is an “understanding with HBO that they want to go with [Kovalev] going forward.” The light heavyweight division is loaded with television-friendly talent, including titleholder Adonis Stevenson, who won the WBC belt with a stunning first round knockout of Chad Dawson earlier this month. </span></p> <p>In addition, super middleweight champion Andre Ward — considered one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in boxing — is expected to eventually move up to light heavyweight.</p> <p style="text-align:right;"><em><strong>– Chris Mannix</strong></em></p> <div id="jp-post-flair" class="sharedaddy sd-like-enabled sd-sharing-enabled"></div> <br/> </div> </div> <div class="post-bottom"> <li>Published On <span>Jun 21, 2013</span></li> <li id="right"><span><div><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/06/21/nathan-cleverly-sergey-kovalev-boxing/#respond" title="Comment on Nathan Cleverly to defend title against undefeated Sergey Kovalev"><span data-lf-article-id="5294" data-lf-site-id="308691" class="livefyre-commentcount">0</span></a></div></span></li> </div> </div> <div class="post-wrap"> <div class="post-top"></div> <div class="post" id="post-5255"> <h1><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/06/14/bernard-hopkins-vs-karo-murat-cancelled-due-to-visa-issues/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to Bernard Hopkins vs. Karo Murat cancelled due to visa issues">Bernard Hopkins vs. Karo Murat cancelled due to visa issues</a></h1> <div class="category"> <a href="/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/category/boxing/">Boxing</a> | <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/06/14/bernard-hopkins-vs-karo-murat-cancelled-due-to-visa-issues/#comment"><span class="js-kit-comments-count" exclude-sources="Twitter" include-sources="Comments" uniq="/2013/06/14/bernard-hopkins-vs-karo-murat-cancelled-due-to-visa-issues/"></span> Comments </a> </div> <div class="entry"> <div id="cnnSCFontButtons"> <div id="cnnSCFontLabel"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize.gif"/></div> <div id="cnnSCFontMinusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('default'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_d.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_l.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"></div> <div id="cnnSCFontPlusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('LargeFont'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_d.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_l.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"></div> </div> <div id="attachment_5256" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 610px"><img class="size-full wp-image-5256" alt="Bernard Hopkins was in New York on June 5, promoting his since-canceled fight. (AP)</p></div> <p>The July 13th light heavyweight title fight between IBF champion Bernard Hopkins and No. 1 contender Karo Murat has been cancelled due to Murat being declared ineligible to receive a visa from the United States, Golden Boy Promotions announced on Friday.</p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">It is unclear if the fight will be rescheduled. On Friday afternoon, Hopkins tweeted that “it Looks like September I’ll be back!! Now, at least I can enjoy some of the summer.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">The 48-year old Hopkins (53-6-2) was scheduled to make his first defense of the title he won in March, when he outpointed Tavoris Cloud to become — for the second time — the oldest man to win a major title. Murat, 29, was originally the mandatory for Cloud. But the IBF granted Cloud an exception to fight Hopkins, with the stipulation that the winner would face Murat (25-1-1) in his next fight. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">“I’m extremely disappointed about the fight being cancelled,” said Hopkins. “I was already in the gym, sparring and preparing for the fight, but things happen. I know [Golden Boy Promotions CEO] Richard Schaefer and the staff at Golden Boy Promotions are already working on something bigger and better. I stay in shape so being ready is never a problem and I look forward to whatever fight is made for me in the near future.”</span></p> <p>Said Murat, “Obviously I’m very disappointed, as I have been in training for almost three months now, but I understand that my promoter’s representative, Chris Meyer, is in talks with Richard Schaefer to discuss possible alternatives.”</p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">IBF Chairman Lindsey Tucker told SI.com that the IBF would wait to hear from Murat’s team that Murat would be unable to attend. According to Tucker, an ordered, agreed upon fight being cancelled is “a problem we have never had before.” Tucker says the IBF could order the two sides to negotiate again or could elevate the next contender. That spot will be determined tonight, when undefeated Sergey Kovalev takes on Cornelius White in Bethlehem, Penn. (NBC Sports Network, 8 p.m.) for the No. 1 position in the IBF rankings.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">If the IBF allows Hopkins to make a voluntary defense, Hopkins has made it clear he would like to unify the 175-pound titles. That could mean a fight against titleholders Nathan Cleverly, Beibut Shumenov or Adonis Stevenson, who became the WBC — and, more importantly, the lineal champion — with a stunning first round knockout of Chad Dawson last weekend. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:13px;line-height:19px;">Hopkins could also pursue a fight with super middleweight titleholder Carl Froch. Hopkins has made it clear he is willing to fight Froch, who defeated Mikkel Kessler last month, in England, where Froch has become a huge box office attraction, and at a catch weight. </span></p> <p style="text-align:right;"><em><strong>– Chris Mannix</strong></em></p> <div id="jp-post-flair" class="sharedaddy sd-like-enabled sd-sharing-enabled"></div> <br/> </div> </div> <div class="post-bottom"> <li>Published On <span>Jun 14, 2013</span></li> <li id="right"><span><div><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/06/14/bernard-hopkins-vs-karo-murat-cancelled-due-to-visa-issues/#respond" title="Comment on Bernard Hopkins vs. Karo Murat cancelled due to visa issues"><span data-lf-article-id="5255" data-lf-site-id="308691" class="livefyre-commentcount">0</span></a></div></span></li> </div> </div> <div class="post-wrap"> <div class="post-top"></div> <div class="post" id="post-5231"> <h1><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/06/04/does-andre-ward-need-carl-froch-believe-it-or-not-it-may-be-true/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to Does Andre Ward need Carl Froch? (Nick Laham/Getty Images)</p></div> <p>In 2011, Andre Ward battered Carl Froch over 12 lopsided rounds, winning a unanimous decision and firmly establishing himself as the No. 1 super middleweight in the world. But as I watched Froch batter Mikkel Kessler last week, a fight witnessed by 18,000 fans in London’s O2 Arena and millions more on Sky Sports in the U.K and HBO in the U.S., it occurred to me:</p> <p>Ward needs Froch more than Froch needs Ward.</p> <p>Think about it: Froch has options. The win over Kessler evened the series between the two and a third fight — in either England or Denmark — would be worth millions. Light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins is practically pleading for a fight with Froch, willing to come to the U.K. and fight at a catchweight to get it. Rising super middleweight contender George Groves is a promotional stablemate of Froch and would create an appealing all-England showdown.</p> <p> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/06/04/does-andre-ward-need-carl-froch-believe-it-or-not-it-may-be-true/#more-5231" class="more-link">Read More…</a></p> <div id="jp-post-flair" class="sharedaddy sd-like-enabled sd-sharing-enabled"></div> <br/> </div> </div> <div class="post-bottom"> <li>Published On <span>Jun 04, 2013</span></li> <li id="right"><span><div><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130722132354/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/06/04/does-andre-ward-need-carl-froch-believe-it-or-not-it-may-be-true/#respond" title="Comment on Does Andre Ward need Carl Froch? [Jens Meyer/AP]</p></div> <p>The cruiserweight division doesn’t get much press in the U.S., in part because most of the top fighters are European and also because many see the division as boxing limbo, a weight class for those that have outgrown light heavyweight and just aren’t big enough to contend with the heavyweights. Ask the casual fan to name the last cruiserweight fight they sat down and watched, and more often than not you will be met with a blank stare.</p> <p>That’s too bad because over the last few years Marco Huck and Ola Afolabi have tangled in two entertaining fights. In 2009, Huck outpoint Afolabi, winning a back and forth bout that saw both land huge shots. They fought again last year, and again both teed off on each other, going 12 rounds in a fight that ended in a draw.</p> <p>On June 8, Huck (35-2-1) and Afolabi (19-2-4) will meet again. Huck’s WBO cruiserweight title will be on the line, a prize Afolabi craves.</p> <p>“My attitude is pretty simple,” Afolabi said. “This was my belt, this is my belt and I am coming to finally take it from him. I honestly do not see how I could lose this fight. I have been working to hard on myself and on the tactics. I should already have won the title last year. Now the time has finally come.”</p> <p>After two physical fights, Afolabi expects another violent encounter.</p> <p>“Huck always comes to fight,” Afolabi said. “When he turns up, he is going for it. He is a bit like a robot and just keeps coming. He is actually too tough to know when he has been hurt.”</p> <p>Afolabi believes that changes in his diet in this camp will give him more stamina in the later rounds.</p> <p>“I am eating properly and take vitamin supplements,” Afolabi said. “I quit eating cheeseburgers and other junk food and have turned to healthy food instead. It makes a huge difference. I could make the weight for the fight right now. So by not having to make weight I can concentrate on my training and keep my focus.”</p> <p>“I am not going into the fight looking for a knockout. That would increase the risk of over-pacing during the first few rounds. However, I see myself stopping Huck early. Regardless of that, I am going to do whatever it takes to leave the ring as the winner.”</p> <p style="text-align:right;">—<em><strong>Chris Mannix</strong></em></p> <div id="jp-post-flair"
