And the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> said<MH559>, “Tell<MH1696> <i>us,</i> how<MH351a> did this<MH2088> wickedness<MH7463a> take<MH1961> place<MH1961>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>So the Levite<MH3881>, the husband<MH376> of the woman<MH802> who was murdered<MH7523>, answered<MH6030a> and said<MH559>, “I came<MH935> with my concubine<MH6370> to spend<MH3885a> the<MH3885a> night<MH3885a> at Gibeah<MH1390> which<MH834> belongs to Benjamin<MH1144>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>citizens<MH1167> of Gibeah<MH1390> rose<MH6965> up<MH6965> against<MH5921> me and surrounded<MH5437> the house<MH1004> at night<MH3915>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>threatening<MH5921> me. They intended<MH1819> to kill<MH2026> me; instead, they raped<MH6031a> my concubine<MH6370> so that she died<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And I took<MH270> hold<MH270> of my concubine<MH6370> and cut<MH5408> her in<MH5408> pieces<MH5408>, and sent<MH7971> her throughout<MH3605> the land<MH7704> of Israel’s<MH3478> inheritance<MH5159>; for they have committed<MH6213a> an outrageous<MH2154> sin<MH2154> and vile<MH5039> act<MH5039> in Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Behold<MH2009>, all<MH3605> you sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, give<MH3051> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>response<MH1697> and advice<MH6098> here<MH1988>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> rose<MH6965> up<MH6965> as one<MH259> person<MH376>, saying<MH559>, “Not one<MH376> of us will go<MH1980> to his tent<MH168>, nor<MH3808> will any<MH376> of us go<MH5493> home<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But now<MH6258> this<MH2088> is the thing<MH1697> which<MH834> we will do<MH6213a> to Gibeah<MH1390>; <i>we will go up</i> against<MH5921> it by lot<MH1486>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And we will take<MH3947> ten<MH6235> men<MH376> out of a hundred<MH3967> throughout<MH3605> the tribes<MH7626> of Israel<MH3478>, and a hundred<MH3967> out of a thousand<MH505>, and a thousand<MH505> out of ten<MH6235> thousand<MH505> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>supply<MH3947> provisions<MH6720> for the people<MH5971a>, so that when they come<MH935> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Gibeah<MH1390> of Benjamin<MH1144>, they may <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>punish<MH6213a> <i>them</i> for all<MH3605> the vile<MH5039> sin<MH5039> that they have committed<MH6213a> in Israel<MH3478>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So all<MH3605> the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> were gathered<MH622> against<MH413> the city<MH5892b>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>united<MH2270> as one<MH259> man<MH376>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then the tribes<MH7626> of Israel<MH3478> sent<MH7971> men<MH376> through the entire<MH3605> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>tribe<MH7626> of Benjamin<MH1144>, saying<MH559>, “What<MH4100> is this<MH2088> wickedness<MH7463a> that has taken<MH1961> place<MH1961> among you? <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, turn<MH5414> over<MH5414> the men<MH376>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>worthless<MH1100> men<MH1121> who<MH834> are in Gibeah<MH1390>, so that we may put<MH4191> them to<MH4191> death<MH4191> and remove<MH1197a> <i>this</i> wickedness<MH7463a> from Israel<MH3478>.” But the sons<MH1121> of Benjamin<MH1144> would<MH14> not listen<MH8085> to the voice<MH6963> of their brothers<MH251>, the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Instead, the sons<MH1121> of Benjamin<MH1144> gathered<MH622> from the cities<MH5892b> to Gibeah<MH1390>, to go<MH3318> out<MH3318> to battle<MH4421> against<MH5973> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>From the cities<MH5892b> on that day<MH3117> the sons<MH1121> of Benjamin<MH1144> were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>counted<MH6485>, twenty-six<MH6242, 8337a> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> who drew<MH8025> the sword<MH2719>, besides<MH905, 4480> the inhabitants<MH3427> of Gibeah<MH1390> who were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>counted<MH6485>, seven<MH7651> hundred<MH3967> choice<MH977> men<MH376>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Out of all<MH3605> these<MH2088> people<MH5971a> seven<MH7651> hundred<MH3967> choice<MH977> men<MH376> were left-handed<MH334, 3225, 3027>; each<MH3605> one<MH2088> could sling<MH7049a> a stone<MH68> at a hair<MH8185> and not miss<MH2398>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> besides<MH905, 4480> Benjamin<MH1144> were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>counted<MH6485>, four<MH702> hundred<MH3967> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> who drew<MH8025> the sword<MH2719>; all<MH3605> of these<MH2088> were men<MH376> of war<MH4421>. <p class="hdg">Civil War, Benjamin Defeated</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> set<MH6965> out<MH6965>, went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to Bethel<MH1008>, and inquired<MH7592> of God<MH430> and said<MH559>, “Who<MH4310> shall go<MH5927> up<MH5927> first<MH8462> for us to battle<MH4421> against<MH5973> the sons<MH1121> of Benjamin<MH1144>?” Then the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559>, “Judah<MH3063> <i>shall go up</i> first<MH8462>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> got<MH6965> up<MH6965> in the morning<MH1242> and camped<MH2583> against<MH5921> Gibeah<MH1390>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>The men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> went<MH3318> to battle<MH4421> against<MH5973> Benjamin<MH1144>, and the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> lined<MH6186a> up<MH6186a> for battle<MH4421> against<MH854> them at Gibeah<MH1390>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then the sons<MH1121> of Benjamin<MH1144> came<MH3318> out<MH3318> of Gibeah<MH1390> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>struck<MH7843> to the ground<MH776> on that day<MH3117> twenty-two<MH8147, 6242> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>But the people<MH5971a>, the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478>, showed<MH2388> themselves courageous<MH2388> and lined<MH6186a> up<MH6186a> for battle<MH4421> again<MH3254> in the place<MH4725> where<MH834, 8033> they had lined<MH6186a> themselves up<MH6186a> on the first<MH7223> day<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> and wept<MH1058> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068> until<MH5704> evening<MH6153>, and inquired<MH7592> of the LORD<MH3068>, saying<MH559>, “Shall we again<MH3254> advance<MH5066> for battle<MH4421> against<MH5973> the sons<MH1121> of my brother<MH251> Benjamin<MH1144>?” And the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559>, “Go<MH5927> up<MH5927> against<MH413> him.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>So the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>came<MH7126> against<MH413> the sons<MH1121> of Benjamin<MH1144> on the second<MH8145> day<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And Benjamin<MH1144> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> against<MH7122> them from Gibeah<MH1390> the second<MH8145> day<MH3117> and struck<MH7843> to the ground<MH776> again<MH5750> eighteen<MH8083, 6240> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>; all<MH3605> of these<MH428> drew<MH8025> the sword<MH2719>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> and came<MH935> to Bethel<MH1008>, and they wept<MH1058> and remained<MH3427> there<MH8033> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>, and fasted<MH6684> that day<MH3117> until<MH5704> evening<MH6153>. And they offered<MH5927> burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a> and peace<MH8002> offerings<MH8002> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> inquired<MH7592> of the LORD<MH3068> (for the ark<MH727> of the covenant<MH1285> of God<MH430> <i>was</i> there<MH8033> in those<MH1992a> days<MH3117>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>and Phinehas<MH6372> the son<MH1121> of Eleazar<MH499>, Aaron’s<MH175> son<MH1121>, stood<MH5975> before<MH6440> it <i>to minister</i> in those<MH1992a> days<MH3117>), saying<MH559>, “Shall I yet<MH5750> again<MH3254> go<MH3318> out<MH3318> to battle<MH4421> against<MH5973> the sons<MH1121> of my brother<MH251> Benjamin<MH1144>, or<MH518> shall I stop<MH2308>?” And the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559>, “Go<MH5927> up<MH5927>, for tomorrow<MH4279> I will hand<MH5414, 3027> them over<MH5414> to you.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>So Israel<MH3478> set<MH7760> men in<MH693> ambush<MH693> around<MH5439> Gibeah<MH1390>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> against<MH413> the sons<MH1121> of Benjamin<MH1144> on the third<MH7992> day<MH3117> and lined<MH6186a> up<MH6186a> against<MH413> Gibeah<MH1390> as at other<MH6471> times<MH6471>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>When the sons<MH1121> of Benjamin<MH1144> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> against<MH7122> the people<MH5971a>, they were lured<MH5423> away<MH5423> from the city<MH5892b>, and they began<MH2490c> to strike<MH5221> and<MH5221> kill<MH5221, 2490a> some<MH4480> of the people<MH5971a> as at other<MH6471> times<MH6471>, on the roads<MH4546> (one<MH259> of which<MH834> goes<MH5927> up<MH5927> to Bethel<MH1008>, and the other<MH259> to Gibeah<MH1390>), <i>and</i> in the field<MH7704>, about thirty<MH7970> men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And the sons<MH1121> of Benjamin<MH1144> said<MH559>, “They are defeated<MH5062> before<MH6440> us, like the first<MH7223> time<MH7223>.” But the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> said<MH559>, “Let’s flee<MH5127>, so that we may draw<MH5423> them away<MH5423> from the city<MH5892b> to the roads<MH4546>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> rose<MH6965> from their place<MH4725> and lined<MH6186a> up<MH6186a> at Baal-tamar<MH1193>; and the men of Israel<MH3478> in<MH693> ambush<MH693> charged<MH1518> from their place<MH4725>, from Maareh-geba<MH4626, 1387>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>When ten<MH6235> thousand<MH505> choice<MH977> men<MH376> from all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> came<MH935> against<MH5048> Gibeah<MH1390>, the battle<MH4421> became<MH3513> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>fierce<MH3513>; but <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>Benjamin did not know<MH3045> that disaster<MH7463a> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>close<MH5060> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> struck<MH5062> Benjamin<MH1144> before<MH6440> Israel<MH3478>, so that the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> destroyed<MH7843> 25,100<MH6242, 2568, 505, 3967> men<MH376> of Benjamin<MH1144> that <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>day<MH3117>, all<MH3605> who<MH428> drew<MH8025> the sword<MH2719>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>So the sons<MH1121> of Benjamin<MH1144> saw<MH7200> that they were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>defeated<MH5062>. When the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> gave<MH5414> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>ground<MH4725> to Benjamin<MH1144> because<MH3588> they relied<MH982> on the men in<MH693> ambush<MH693> whom<MH834> they had set<MH7760> against<MH413> Gibeah<MH1390>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>the men in<MH693> ambush<MH693> hurried<MH2363a> and rushed<MH6584> against<MH413> Gibeah<MH1390>; the men in<MH693> ambush<MH693> also deployed<MH4900> and struck<MH5221> all<MH3605> the city<MH5892b> with the edge<MH6310> of the sword<MH2719>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Now the agreed<MH4150> sign<MH4150> between the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> and the men in<MH693> ambush<MH693> was that they would make<MH7235a> a great<MH7235a> cloud<MH4864> of smoke<MH6227> rise<MH5927> from the city<MH5892b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>Then the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> turned<MH2015> in the battle<MH4421>, and Benjamin<MH1144> began<MH2490c> to strike<MH5221> and<MH5221> kill<MH5221, 2491> about thirty<MH7970> men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478>, for they said<MH559>, “Undoubtedly<MH389, 5062> they are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>defeated<MH5062> before<MH6440> us, as in the first<MH7223> battle<MH4421>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>But when the cloud<MH4864> began<MH2490c> to rise<MH5927> from the city<MH5892b> <i>in</i> a column<MH5982> of smoke<MH6227>, Benjamin<MH1144> looked<MH6437> behind<MH310> them; and behold<MH2009>, the entire<MH3632> city<MH5892b> was going<MH5927> up<MH5927> <i>in smoke</i> to heaven<MH8064>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>Then the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> turned<MH2015>, and the men<MH376> of Benjamin<MH1144> were terrified<MH926>; for they saw<MH7200> that disaster<MH7463a> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>close<MH5060> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>Therefore, they turned<MH6437> their backs before<MH6440> the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> <i>to flee</i> in the direction<MH413, 1870> of the wilderness<MH4057b>, but the battle<MH4421> overtook<MH1692> them while<MH834> those who<MH834> <i>attacked</i> from the cities<MH5892b> were annihilating<MH7843> them in the midst<MH8432> of them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>They surrounded<MH3803> Benjamin<MH1144>, pursued<MH7291> them without rest<MH4496>, <i>and</i> trampled<MH1869> them down<MH1869> opposite<MH5227> Gibeah<MH1390> toward<MH4480> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>east<MH4217, 8121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/20-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>So eighteen<MH8083, 6240> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> of Benjamin<MH1144> fell<MH5307>;
