First, they should support situative embodiment in academic knowledge, where personally meaningful activities and coherent narratives foster collective engagement. Second, they should offer multiple levels and forms of meaningful assessment and the opportunity to succeed, fail, and try again. Third, they should provide useful feedback that is used to enhance participation, learning, and curricula. These principles were developed in three annual design-based refinements of a 15hour ecological sciences gaming curriculum in nine upper elementary classes. Across years, the situative embodiment afforded by the curriculum was refined with informal assessment, and innovative virtual formative feedback was incorporated around a key curricular activity. Results across years revealed incremental improvements in participation, understanding of key concepts, and achievement of targeted standards. The videogames were specifically designed to address the educational goals of the first and second years of school, for basic mathematics and reading comprehension. The sample was divided into experimental groups (EG), internal control groups (IC) and external control groups (EC). Students in the EG groups, used the experimental video games during an average of 30 h over a 3-month period. They were evaluated on their acquisition of reading comprehension, spelling, and mathematical skills, and on their motivation to use video games. Teachers’ expectations of change due to the use of video games, their technological transfer, and handling of classroom dynamics, were assessed through ad hoc tests and classroom observations. The results show significant differences between the EG and IC groups in relation to the EC group in Math, Reading Comprehension and Spelling, but no significant differences in these aspects were found between the EG and the IC groups. Teacher reports and classroom observations confirm an improvement in motivation to learn, and a positive technological transfer of the experimental tool. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study was conducted with a developmental research method which is one of the designbased research methods. In the game design process, product design, development, and evaluation phases were carried out in accordance with the principles in developmental research method. Product design and development studies were carried out in three stages in accordance with design-based research. The studies conducted at each stage were evaluated by a team of 14 experts. Before moving to the next stage, in each step the necessary corrections were made in the game. Findings: The first stage of the study deal with game design in which the data on writing scenario, adaptation of this scenario to different player types, and lastly some drawings on the scenario were obtained. The data was analysed, and necessary arrangements were made before moving to the next stage. In the second stage, evaluations were made for the 3D design studies of the game. At this stage, data were elicited on how different player types collect points, on the duration, on the tasks of the accessories used by different player types, on the way the player reaches to the units in the game and on the design of the characters. After obtaining these data, arrangements were made, we moved to the third stage. In the third stage, depending on the feedback obtained from the players, the interaction of the characters and the dialogue windows that appear on the screen necessary arrangements were made. Highlights: In this study, the stages in the educational digital game design process were determined, and at the end of the study, a 3D educational game that can be played by different player types was developed in accordance with the learning outcomes in the curriculum. In this context several approaches are possible, such as using paper prototyping, game maker tools like Scratch, RPG-Maker, Construct 3 or Game Maker Studio 2, and the application of actual game engines like Unity. This contribution aims to discuss the possibility of creating games in a very specific, predefined genre using game maker tools that have been especially developed for use in an educational context and therefore offer didactic guidance. The Game Creator Tool which was developed as part of the Erasmus+ project Create Digital Games for Education (CDG4E) is presented in more depth. Using this tool, one can create decision card games inspired by the mobile game bestseller &quot;Reigns&quot;. Within the project, the consortium created educational games in different areas such as fake news prevention and STEM education. In addition to these ready-made games, another focus was placed on using the tool itself as a teaching technique, for example to create games on a specific topic with school classes or within youth work, but also as an instrument for setting up dedicated &quot;game jams&quot;.
