They are mentioned numerous times throughout the Old and New Testaments, reflecting their importance in ancient Near Eastern culture and warfare.

Historical Context and Usage

Chariots were primarily used in warfare and were a symbol of military strength. They were typically drawn by horses and manned by a driver and one or more warriors. The use of chariots in battle is well-documented in the Bible, particularly in the narratives of the Old Testament. The Egyptians, Canaanites, and other ancient civilizations are frequently depicted as using chariots in their military campaigns.

Biblical References

One of the earliest mentions of chariots is in the account of Joseph, who was made second in command in Egypt and rode in a chariot as a sign of his authority (Genesis 41:43). The Egyptians' reliance on chariots is further highlighted during the Exodus, when Pharaoh pursued the Israelites with "six hundred of the best chariots, along with all the other chariots of Egypt" (Exodus 14:7).

The Canaanites also used chariots, as seen in the account of Sisera, the commander of Jabin's army, who had "nine hundred iron chariots" (Judges 4:3). Despite their formidable presence, the Israelites, under the leadership of Deborah and Barak, defeated Sisera's forces, demonstrating God's power over human military might.

King Solomon is noted for his accumulation of chariots and horses, which were part of his wealth and military strength. "Solomon accumulated chariots and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses, which he stationed in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem" (1 Kings 10:26). This accumulation, however, was contrary to the warnings given in Deuteronomy 17:16, where the king was advised not to multiply horses for himself.

Symbolism and Prophetic Imagery

Chariots also carry symbolic meaning in the Bible. They often represent human power and reliance on military strength rather than on God. In Isaiah 31:1, the prophet warns, "Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the abundance of chariots and in the multitude of horsemen. They do not look to the Holy One of Israel; they do not seek the LORD" .

In prophetic literature, chariots are sometimes used to depict divine intervention and judgment. For instance, in 2 Kings 2:11, Elijah is taken up to heaven in a whirlwind by "a chariot of fire and horses of fire" , symbolizing God's power and presence.

New Testament References

While chariots are less frequently mentioned in the New Testament, they still appear in significant contexts. In Acts 8:28-38, the Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of the treasury of the Kandake (queen of the Ethiopians), is found reading the book of Isaiah while riding in his chariot. This encounter leads to his conversion and baptism by Philip, highlighting the spread of the Gospel beyond Jewish boundaries.

Conclusion

Chariots in the Bible serve as a reminder of the temporal nature of human power and the ultimate sovereignty of God. They illustrate the tension between reliance on worldly strength and trust in divine providence, a theme that resonates throughout the biblical narrative.
ATS Bible Dictionary
Chariots
Scripture speaks of two sorts of these: one for princes and generals to ride in, Genesis 41:43; the other to break the enemy's battalions, by rushing in among them, being "chariots of iron," that is, armed with iron scythes or hooks, projecting from the ends of the axle-trees. These made terrible havoc. The Canaanites, whom Joshua engaged at the waters of Meron, had horsemen, and a multitude of chariots, Joshua 11:4 Jude 1:19. Sisera, general of Jabin king of Hazor, had nine hundred chariots of iron, Jud 4:3. See LITTER.

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
CHARIOTS OF THE SUN
(markebhoth ha-shemesh): These, together with "horses of the sun," are mentioned in 2 Kings 23:11. They are said to have stood in the temple, a gift of the kings of Judah. Josiah removed the horses from the precincts of the temple and burned the chariots. Among the Greeks, Helios was endowed with horses and chariots. Thus the course of the sun as he sped across the skies was understood by the mythological mind of antiquity. The Babylonian god Shamash (= Hebrew Shemesh) likewise had his chariot and horses as well as his charioteer. The cult of the sun and other heavenly bodies which was particularly in vogue during the latter days of the Judean monarchy (compare 2 Kings 23:5 Ezekiel 8:16; Deuteronomy 17:3 Jeremiah 8:2) seems to have constituted an element of the Canaanitish religion (compare the names of localities like Beth-shemesh and the like). The chariots of the sun are also referred to in Enoch 72:5, 37; 75:4, and Greek Apocrypha of Baruch 6.

Max L.
