recently, particularly in the electronic sphere. Music made with a machine was strange and novel when the synth-based pioneers were creating these worlds (<em>A Clockwork Orange, Blade Runner</em> et al), whereas now it has the potential to be as commonplace as a grey paving slab. Luckily <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/murcof">Murcof</a>’s music is far closer to the former, as pads swell cinematically and modular effects ping around the mix in what must be one of 2024’s most dynamic records.</p> <p>The structure of Cosmic Drifter is a great example, as an ominous synth ostinato builds to a momentous climax, aided by monotonal bass hits that sound as if they’re refracting into another dimension. All These Worlds, Pt. II’s pulsing arrangement is decidedly <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/autechre"><strong>Autechre</strong></a>-esque, with cluster chords toggling between octaves and the pitter-patter of some unobtrusive percussion, while the groove of Night Break is frustratingly good in-between the bars of empty space.</p> <p>This might technically be an ‘ambient’ album, but at various points it’s very hard to ignore. Syncopated thuds characterise Enemy’s opening stretch, interspersed with drum machine beats and a grandiose, reverberating chord sequence. The rest of the track is slightly quieter but still carries the shimmying energy of an ’80s dance track, a neon-bright melody, punchy snares and prominent bass filling the mix.</p> <p>By the time the grinding and wordless wailing of Fight is over and the four-minute wall of sound fades into silence, the effect is one of pleasant exhaustion. It is also unsurprising that Murcof has worked on multiple soundtracks in the past, as these songs move through their peaks and troughs like they have an unspoken narrative driving them.
