<t><p class="indent1">It is close at hand, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>A day of darkness and gloom, <t><p class="indent1">A day of clouds and of thick [dark] mist, <t><p class="indent1">Like the dawn spread over the mountains; <t><p class="indent1">There is a [pagan, hostile] people numerous and mighty, <t><p class="indent1">The like of which has never been before <t><p class="indent1">Nor will be again afterward <t><p class="indent1">Even for years of many generations. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Before them a fire devours, <t><p class="indent1">And behind them a flame burns; <t><p class="indent1">Before them the land is like the Garden of Eden, <t><p class="indent1">But behind them a desolate wilderness; <t><p class="indent1">And nothing at all escapes them. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Their appearance is like the appearance of horses, <t><p class="indent1">And they run like war horses. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Like the noise of chariots <t><p class="indent1">They leap on the tops of the mountains, <t><p class="indent1">Like the crackling of a flame of fire devouring the stubble, <t><p class="indent1">Like a mighty people set in battle formation. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Before them the people are in anguish; <t><p class="indent1">All faces become pale [with terror]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>They run like warriors; <t><p class="indent1">They climb the wall like soldiers. <t><p class="indent1">They each march [straight ahead] in line, <t><p class="indent1">And they do not deviate from their paths. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>They do not crowd each other; <t><p class="indent1">Each one marches in his path. <t><p class="indent1">When they burst through the defenses (weapons), <t><p class="indent1">They do not break ranks. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>They rush over the city, <t><p class="indent1">They run on the wall; <t><p class="indent1">They climb up into the houses, <t><p class="indent1">They enter at the windows like a thief. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>The earth quakes before them, <t><p class="indent1">The heavens tremble, <t><p class="indent1">The sun and the moon grow dark <t><p class="indent1">And the stars lose their brightness. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>The LORD utters His voice before His army, <t><p class="indent1">For His camp is very great, <t><p class="indent1">Because strong <i>and</i> powerful is he who [obediently] carries out His word. <t><p class="indent1">For the day of the LORD is indeed great and very terrible [causing dread]; <t><p class="indent1">Who can endure it? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>“Even now,” says the LORD, <p class="indent1stline">“Turn <i>and</i> come to Me with all your heart [in genuine repentance], <t><p class="indent1">With fasting and weeping and mourning [until every barrier is removed and the broken fellowship is restored]; <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Rip your heart to pieces [in sorrow and contrition] and not your garments.” <t><p class="indent1">Now return [in repentance] to the LORD your God, <t><p class="indent1">For He is gracious and compassionate, <t><p class="indent1">Slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness [faithful to His covenant with His people]; <t><p class="indent1">And He relents [His sentence of] evil [when His people genuinely repent]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Who knows whether He will relent [and revoke your sentence], <t><p class="indent1">And leave a blessing behind Him, <t><p class="indent1">Even a grain offering and a drink offering [from the bounty He provides you] <t><p class="indent1">For the LORD your God? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Blow a trumpet in Zion [warning of impending judgment], <t><p class="indent1">Dedicate a fast [as a day of restraint and humility], call a solemn assembly. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, <t><p class="indent1">Assemble the elders, <t><p class="indent1">Gather the children and the nursing infants. <t><p class="indent1">Let the bridegroom come out of his room <t><p class="indent1">And the bride out of her bridal chamber. [No one is excused from the assembly.] <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, <t><p class="indent1">Weep between the porch and the altar, <t><p class="indent1">And let them say, “Have compassion <i>and</i> spare Your people, O LORD, <t><p class="indent1">And do not make Your inheritance (Israel) an object of ridicule, <t><p class="indent1">Or a [humiliating] byword among the [Gentile] nations. <t><p class="indent1">Why should they say among the peoples, <t><p class="indent1">‘Where is their God?’” <p class="hdg">Deliverance Promised</p><poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then the LORD will be jealous for His land [ready to defend it since it is rightfully and uniquely His] <t><p class="indent1">And will have compassion on His people [and will spare them]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>The LORD will answer and say to His people, <p class="indent1stline">“Behold, I am going to send you grain and new wine and oil, <t><p class="indent1">And you will be satisfied <i>in full</i> with them; <t><p class="indent1">And I will never again make you an object of ridicule among the [Gentile] nations. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>“But I will remove the northern <i>army</i> far away from you, <t><p class="indent1">And I will drive it into a parched and desolate land, <t><p class="indent1">With its forward guard into the eastern sea (Dead Sea) <t><p class="indent1">And with its rear guard into the western sea (Mediterranean Sea). <t><p class="indent1">And its stench will arise and its foul odor of decay will come up [this is the fate of the northern army in the final day of the LORD], <t><p class="indent1">For <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>He has done great things.” <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Do not fear, O land; be glad and rejoice, <t><p class="indent1">For the LORD has done great things! <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Do not be afraid, you animals of the field, <t><p class="indent1">For the pastures of the wilderness have turned green; <t><p class="indent1">The tree has produced its fruit, <t><p class="indent1">And the fig tree and the vine have yielded in full. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>So rejoice, O children of Zion, <t><p class="indent1">And delight in the LORD, your God; <t><p class="indent1">For He has given you the early [autumn] rain in vindication <t><p class="indent1">And He has poured down the rain for you, <t><p class="indent1">The early [autumn] rain and the late [spring] rain, as before. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And the threshing floors shall be full of grain, <t><p class="indent1">And the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>“And I will compensate you for the years <t><p class="indent1">That the swarming locust has eaten, <t><p class="indent1">The creeping locust, the stripping locust, and the gnawing locust-- <t><p class="indent1">My great army which I sent among you. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>“You will have plenty to eat and be satisfied <t><p class="indent1">And praise the name of the LORD your God <t><p class="indent1">Who has dealt wondrously with you; <t><p class="indent1">And My people shall never be put to shame. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>“And you shall know [without any doubt] that I am in the midst of Israel [to protect and bless you], <t><p class="indent1">And that I am the LORD your God, <t><p class="indent1">And there is no other; <t><p class="indent1">My people will never be put to shame. <p class="hdg">The Promise of the Spirit</p><poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>“It shall come about after this <t><p class="indent1">That I shall pour out My Spirit on all mankind; <t><p class="indent1">And your sons and your daughters will prophesy, <t><p class="indent1">Your old men will dream dreams, <t><p class="indent1">Your young men will see visions. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>“Even on the male and female servants <t><p class="indent1">I will pour out My Spirit in those days. <p class="hdg">The Day of the LORD</p><poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>“I will show signs <i>and</i> wonders [displaying My power] in the heavens and on the earth, <t><p class="indent1">Blood and fire and columns of smoke. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>“The sun will be turned into darkness <t><p class="indent1">And the moon into blood <t><p class="indent1">Before the great and terrible day of the LORD comes. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joel/2-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>“And it shall come about that whoever calls on the name of the LORD <t><p class="indent1">Will be saved [from the coming judgment] <t><p class="indent1">For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem <t><p class="indent1">There will be those who escape, <t><p class="indent1">As the LORD has said, <t><p class="indent1">Even among the remnant [of survivors] whom the LORD calls.<A name="fn"></a></p><br /><br /><span class="footnotesbot">[a]</span> <span class="fnverse">20</span> Interpreters are divided as to whether it is the northern destroyer who has done “great things,” or the Lord.
