Look To The Stars will focus on some of these people and their actions, many of which you can get involved in, over the coming months.

This week, celebrities are asking people who feel the pinch of limited incomes to use their consumer power and send a message to corporations, knowing money is the thing that matters most to them.

John Leguizamo is hoping his fans will unite in support of the upcoming Feb 28th boycott, saying on Facebook, “Don’t spend your money 💵! We wanted everyone who read our site to try helping a stranger, even just once, to see why their idols did it. We hoped that people would see how good it feels to give their time and support to others, and would want to do more of it.

With this in mind, we set aside our own personal preferences and included people and organizations whether or not their ideals aligned with ours. We knew that all celebrities had an audience, and we hoped that including them would inspire their fans to follow their philanthropic leads. We prided ourselves on walking a thin line of being purely positive and supportive, while remaining impartial to politics and general values.

Eventually I was worn down by seeing the behind-the-scenes activities, and witnessing how ego and greed can corrupt what should be positive actions. I had to step away from the active running of Look To The Stars, despite people still randomly contacting us to say how much good our site was doing. Every time I came back to try to work on the site, I was overwhelmed by how deeply greed and ego were woven into certain areas of philanthropy, and I would have to step away again.

But, I can’t sit back any longer. We have a platform, and on this platform we have the ability to share information with people around the world, in a time when finding messages of truth, love, and support on the internet is becoming increasingly challenging.

We will no longer be including every random celebrity on our website. Any celebrity who encourages hatred, violence or mistreatment of another based on qualities they cannot control will be removed. We will continue to share news that supports people helping others in need (preferably people who don’t already have more then they need already), but only involving celebrities who have a exhibited a reasonable level of tolerance.

I had planned to post something about the Paradox of Intolerance here. It is true that a safe and secure society must be intolerant of those who are intolerant: society has to stand against those who would hurt others. But I have recently seen it turned against both racists and people who are working for a more just and equal society.

Here I have to say, there is a difference between hating people for who they are, and wishing people would make different choices. It is perfectly okay to be angry or upset about people’s actions. It is okay to demand that they change those actions. It happens every day in courts around the world when we put criminals on trial. We do it when we scold our children for doing something dangerous.

It is perfectly okay to speak up, yell, gather and demand that future choices and actions be different. Actions and choices can be changed; they are not hard-coded into a person’s genes. A person’s race, sex, or ethnicity are not the same thing as another person’s choice to hoard and deny resources, or to commit a hate crime.

This site’s editorial team will not tolerate intolerance where race, religion, or gender identity are concerned. If a celebrity openly hates a group of people, we cannot consider them a role model, regardless of how much money they might donate or how large an audience they command.

We are tolerant of the intolerant when it comes to encouraging people to change harmful actions. Encouraging others to make choices that benefit society is the only way a better society will have a chance of evolving. So, if you are one of the countless people who do want a fairer, healthier, safer world for everyone, welcome. We thank you for your visit, and hope you can find something here to keep you going.

- Myrlia Purcell and the LTTS team

We are still a volunteer-based organization, with no real funding to speak of, and a very small team. This is a plus, because it means we’re free of any financial influence from big donors. But it also means we might take a long time to answer emails, and we aren’t in a position to help others financially, much to our great regret. Still we will do our best to provide a refuge for those on the internet looking for hope.

From: http://www.looktothestars.org/news/21124-editorial-why-we-are-delisting-some-celebrities

Explore celebrities by social reach, cause, location, field and more with Insider Access →

Copyright © 2025 Look To The Stars. They also enjoyed an arts and crafts session where Sophie spent time getting to know the boys and girls whilst creating pictures using natural materials such as moss, dried fruits, spices, leaves and twigs.

These workshops are run with a local charity partner, the Foundation Towards Dialogue, that supports children from the Roma community, including thousands of Ukrainian Roma who have sought refuge in Poland. Because of the stigma attached to the Roma community, they often face discrimination and struggle accessing services, making them among the most vulnerable group of refugees seeking sanctuary in Poland.

Sophie then visited a library supported by Save the Children and its partners, to learn how secondary school students are building resilience in a new country and crucial life skills after their education was disrupted by the war.

The full-scale war in Ukraine, which broke out in February 2022, has disrupted the education of around 4 million children – the vast majority of school students across the country. Currently, about 600,000 students are now learning remotely across Ukraine due to the ongoing risk of attacks.

At the library, Sophie immersed herself into a workshop with a group of 15-18-year-olds from a local Ukrainian school which was set up in the outskirts of Warsaw by Ukrainian teachers who had fled when the war escalated in 2022. The ‘Healing and Education through the Arts’ (HEART) session provides psychosocial support to children who are trying to adapt and overcome the distressing situations they have experienced, including through peer-to-peer discussions and art sessions.

Here Sophie met with 17-year-old Jana from Kyiv in Ukraine, who spoke about her hopes and dreams.

Jana said, “I want to do something to help Ukraine – to change things. I’ve travelled a lot because of war, because I was trying to find a new home. The experience I have gained has been such a vital part of my life now – it has been defining. I want to use this experience to help rebuild Ukraine, to give it a bright future.”

Speaking about her visit, Sophie said: "It has been an absolute privilege to meet with some of the young people Save the Children supports here in Warsaw. The stories I’ve heard have been truly inspiring. Despite their unimaginable hardship – having everything they know and love taken away from them – it’s incredible just how resilient the children are.

“When talking to me about their lives here in Poland, they all spoke with smiles on their faces. They described how they’ve enjoyed reconnecting with their Ukrainian community as well as making new Polish friends. I was overwhelmed at how excited they were for their futures and just how many of them wanted to make a positive difference to the world around them.

“It is so easy to take school for granted but hearing the children speak about how these sessions provide them with hope and a sense of familiarity has been truly humbling. Equally, the teams who run the programmes and centres here have built such a safe space for this marginalised community. It’s no wonder the children love attending. They provide them with a sense of normality which will ultimately help deliver long-lasting impact.”

In Poland, thousands of Ukrainian children remain out of school. As of October 2024, approximately 151,000 school-aged Ukrainian refugee children were enrolled in Polish schools, however estimates suggest that between 21,000 and 143,000 may not be attending, despite a new Polish mandate making education compulsory for all Ukrainian children.

Celina Kretkowska-Adamowicz, acting Response Director at Save the Children in Poland said: “Education is a fundamental component of our humanitarian response, enabling us to deliver lasting change for children. We know conflicts push education systems to the brink, and this couldn’t be truer for the situation in Ukraine. We don’t want children’s experiences of war to define them. We want to give them hope for the future – and that’s exactly what education can do.”

February 24th 2025 will mark three years since the escalation of war in Ukraine which changed the lives of 7.5 million Ukrainian children forever. The UK has already provided over £477 million in humanitarian aid since 2022, but funding for front-line communities and critical winter support is running low.

The UK Government can unlock a further £2.3 billion from the sale of Chelsea Football Club, currently stuck in a UK bank account due to bureaucratic issues. This would fund humanitarian programmes for children and families impacted by the war in Ukraine, at no cost to the taxpayer.

By releasing this fund now – which is worth almost five times more than the UK’s total aid to Ukraine since 2022 – the UK Government could help deliver aid to 6.5 million more Ukrainian people across the region and here in the UK through food, cash transfers, mental health support, and education services.

From: http://www.looktothestars.org/news/21121-sophie-ellis-bextor-meets-refugee-children-in-poland-to-mark-three-years-of-war-in-ukraine

Related past articles

Ashley Jensen Launches New Shaun the Sheep Animation for Save the Children's Christmas Jumper Day

Sir Mo Farah Heartbroken to See Escalating Impact of Climate Change on Children in His Homeland

Stars Walk the Yellow Brick Carpet for Save the Children's Wonderful Wizard of Oz Winter Gala

Advertise your company to our engaged yearly audience of millions →

Copyright © 2025 Look To The Stars. Kolzak Award at the 36th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on March 27th.

GLAAD’s Stephen F. Kolzak Award is presented to a LGBTQ media professional who has made a significant difference in raising visibility and promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people and issues. It is named in honor of the Los Angeles casting director who devoted the last part of his life to fighting homophobia and HIV stigma within the entertainment industry. Previous recipients of the Stephen F. Kolzak Award include: Niecy Nash-Betts, Jeremy Pope, Laverne Cox, Wanda Sykes, Jim Parsons, Ruby Rose, Chaz Bono, Melissa Etheridge, Ellen DeGeneres, Michaela Jae Rodriguez and more.

Cynthia Erivo is a multi-talented artist whose work transcends boundaries in theater, television, and film. As a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), Erivo’s career took off with her 2015 Tony Award-winning portrayal of Celie in The Color Purple on Broadway, where she broke barriers playing as Celie Harris, one of the few leading Black queer characters in musical theater.

In 2016, she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, delivering one of the most powerful performances in Broadway history, particularly in the iconic number, “I’m Here.” Erivo continued to impress with her portrayal of abolitionist Harriet Tubman in the 2019 film Harriet, earning Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA nominations.

Erivo’s contributions to LGBTQ visibility extend from screen to stage, with her bold commitment to representing the complexities of queer and Black identities – both in her work and her personal advocacy – positioning her as a trailblazer and a true champion for future generations of LGBTQ creatives, especially those from communities of color.

At the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in 2017, Erivo performed a cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine” as a powerful, yet heartbreaking tribute to the victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting, honoring the 49 lives lost in the Orlando nightclub attack, as well as transgender women who have been murdered in hate crimes. On her chilling performance, Vulture wrote: “not even Lennon could have dreamed his song would sound this good one day.” Playbill described the cover as “soaring [and] emotional.”

In 2022, she publicly identified as queer in British Vogue’s Pride issue, signaling a powerful declaration of her intersectional identity as a Black, queer woman in entertainment, consistently using her platform to amplify the voices of LGBTQ people of color and continues to challenge systemic barriers in the industry.

In Pride Month of 2024, Erivo headlined Stonewall Day, founded by Pride Live, a day of awareness commemorating the historical impact of Stonewall during New York City Pride. “In the face of hate and discrimination, the queer community rose up together and fought for the spaces where we could be free through music and dance,” she remarked during her performance.

Today, Erivo remains a powerhouse talent and force for equity and inclusion.

Starring as Elphaba in the 36th Annual GLAAD Media Award-nominated film adaptation of Wicked, and the forthcoming Wicked:For Good, Erivo brought to life a role that resonated with themes that mirrored her own journey as a queer, Black woman navigating a world that often marginalizes both identities.

As the cover star for the 2024 Out100 list, Erivo recalled the responsibility set on her to tell Elphaba’s story to the masses: “It’s hard to talk about Elphaba as an ‘other’ without having it intrinsically linked to being a woman who walks through the world as a queer, Black woman. Immediately, I understood what it meant for people to look at you and see you as not beautiful, not acceptable, not any of those things, because I walked through the world like this … And having to find a way to not necessarily be okay with it but be okay with yourself enough, so that when other people put that on you, you can still move through it.”

From an outspoken ally to a trailblazing member of the community, Cynthia Erivo’s one-of-a-kind voice has been an integral part of accelerating acceptance for LGBTQ people since she came on the scene over a decade ago. Her legacy is defined not by her numerous accolades and honors but by how with each new platform and milestone, she continues to show up for Black, queer, and other marginalized peoples amid her well-deserved success," said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “As she continues to shatter glass ceilings, I am certain her commitment to showing up as the intersectional and authentic person she is will never falter, and it is a privilege to present her with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award at this year’s GLAAD Media Awards.”

The GLAAD Media Awards ceremony, which powers GLAAD’s work to accelerate LGBTQ acceptance and visibility in media all year round, will be held this year in Los Angeles.

GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis serves as Executive Producer of the 36th GLAAD Media Awards, alongside GLAAD’s Rich Ferraro and Anthony Allen Ramos. GLAAD’s Tony Morrison will serve as Supervising Producer and Jose Useche will serve as Producer. He is the mastermind and Co-Founder of Cure Addiction Now, and it is my great honor to celebrate his legacy of inspiring the creation of new therapies to treat and ultimately save lives. Those struggling with substance use disorder deserve our help in fighting against this disease, both physically and psychologically, which is why we have assembled the collaborative group of esteemed doctors who are part of our Cure Addiction Now team that represent Mount Sinai, Harvard, Yale, UCLA, Scripps, University of Washington, UC Davis, Columbia, University of Kentucky, Johns Hopkins, and University of Texas Medical Branch,” said Nancy Davis.

The event will unite supporters, advocates, and experts to raise critical funds for CAN’s groundbreaking initiatives. By fostering collaboration among leading scientists and addressing both addiction and mental health, CAN is advancing toward its goal of eliminating stigma and delivering life-saving solutions.

In addition to funding scientific research, a donation will be made from the event to a local center supporting patients who suffer from substance use disorder that have been affected by the fires in Los Angeles. “People who struggle with this disease need support now more than ever during times of crisis. I am heartbroken at the tremendous loss our community has endured because of the devastating wildfires. No words can describe or properly convey the life altering impact it has made on family and friends. My deepest sympathies go out to all who have been affected by this unfathomable force of destruction,” said Davis. “It was Jason’s dream to help everyone who suffers from this disease of the brain, and we are on a mission to find a Cure for Addiction Now! Thank you to our community for opening your hearts and for your continued compassion and generosity.”

Co-founded by Nancy Davis and her late son, Jason Davis, CAN is transforming the landscape of addiction treatment through science-driven research and innovation. To date, the organization has funded over 19 groundbreaking studies, focusing on goals such as developing therapies to stop the craving mechanism in the brain, making detox easier and affordable for everyone to achieve sobriety and funding vaccine research.

Central to CAN’s mission is the commitment to removing the shame and stigma surrounding addiction and seeking help, ensuring individuals feel empowered to pursue recovery without judgment. Recognizing the deep connection between addiction and mental health, CAN emphasizes that substance use disorder is not merely a physical dependency. It is a disease often intertwined with mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, and trauma. By integrating mental health into its research and treatment strategies, CAN is forging a holistic approach to recovery—addressing both the physical and psychological factors that contribute to addiction.

For more than 30 years, Nancy Davis has spearheaded the Race to Erase MS Gala, which has raised over $56 million for multiple sclerosis research, establishing the event as a cornerstone of the MS community. Now, Davis brings her unwavering passion and expertise to the fight against addiction, leading CAN’s mission with the same drive to deliver transformative results.

From: http://www.looktothestars.org/news/21116-rufus-wainwright-to-perform-at-cure-addiction-now-inaugural-fundraising-evening

Related past articles

Kathy and Nicky Hilton Host Annual Pajama Party

31st Annual Race to Erase MS Gala Raises Over $1.5 Million

Race to Erase MS Announces 31st Annual Gala

Advertise your company to our engaged yearly audience of millions →

Copyright © 2025 Look To The Stars. This resulted in his raising over 10 million USD.

YOSHIKI, who has been based in Los Angeles for nearly 30 years, said: “I canceled all of my appearances overseas because I want to be here in LA to support my friends and community. I have lived in Los Angeles for almost 30 years, and it breaks my heart and gives me severe depression to see the city burning like this. I was hearing sirens and helicopters flying over, all day and night. I was also forced to evacuate, but thankfully my place did not burn, although many friends have lost everything. It’s hard to comprehend what was going on here. I’m deeply affected by this tragedy, and I’m praying for all those who have suffered from this tragedy. As I’ve been saying over the years, ‘Helping people helps yourself as well.’ I will keep supporting.”

Laura Segura, Executive Director of MusiCares said “YOSHIKI’s generosity knows no bounds. We are incredibly grateful for his ongoing support, which ensures that those affected can access the resources they need to recover and rebuild.”

Linda Roth, World Central Kitchen’s Chief Communications Officer said
“We are so grateful for the support that YOSHIKI brings to World Central Kitchen – his commitment to support his local community is exactly what fuels WCK.”

“On behalf of Cedars-Sinai, we sincerely thank the Yoshiki Foundation America for its generous donation to support our wildfire relief efforts. This contribution will play a vital role in helping those at Cedars-Sinai affected by this tragedy, and we are deeply grateful for YOSHIKI’s ongoing commitment to Los Angeles as a part of this community,” said Arthur J. The new endowment will ensure the cultural institution’s sustainability and long-term support for music education, empowering future generations of students with access to the transformative power of making music.

While the formal partnership with Paramount is ending, the relationship will remain, as the company has pledged an initial six-figure donation to the endowment.

This milestone marks the completion of a process that began in 2019 when the organization rebranded, removing the VH1 name. This was the first step of a strategy designed to reduce reliance on a single funding source and instead embrace a more broad-based approach to financial support.

Over the past five years, Save The Music has attracted a diverse group of funders, with 95% of the organizational budget in 2024 coming from non-Paramount sources, including community-based foundations, individual donations, and contributions from the music industry.

Notable funders include major record labels, talent agencies, Live Nation, AEG Presents, and tech giants such as Amazon, TikTok, and Meta. In 2021 Save The Music also received a $2 million grant – the largest in the organization’s history – from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.

Since its inception, STM has invested over $75 million in more than 2,800 school music programs. Since 2019 it has doubled the number of schools it reaches, funding more than 600 new programs in U.S. cities such as New York, Newark, Atlanta, Miami, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Nashville and Columbus; as well as significant regional projects in West Virginia and the Mississippi Delta.

“Going independent is a huge step forward for us – and the culmination of a five-year effort from our team, partners, and boards,” says Executive Director Henry Donahue. “In every school I visit – from the Bronx to Miami, Philadelphia to Los Angeles, Detroit to Columbus, Memphis to New Orleans – I find that the music room is a special place. The students are excited to be there, and they are creative, thoughtful, and optimistic in a way that should give us all hope for the future.”

Save The Music has also strengthened its artist partnerships, led by internal leadership and the Save The Music Advisory Board, which includes Eric Wong (President, East West Records & Head of Global A&R, Warner Recorded Music), Caroline Abs (Head of Marketing, Sony Latin-Iberia Region), Jonathan Azu (Founder & CEO, Culture Collective), and Gurj Bassi (Head of Music Marketing & Partnerships, SiriusXM), among others. Recent Artist Ambassador campaigns have been led by Ed Sheeran, Becky G, and Jelly Roll and STM has also collaborated with Breland, Brittney Spencer, Young The Giant, Tank (Tank and The Bangas), Durand Bernarr, Ed Sheeran, Lawernce (the band), Chelsea Cutler, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, and Infinity Song.

STM’s widespread industry support was on display last fall at its signature Nashville event, the fifth annual Hometown to Hometown benefit. The evening raised more than $300,000 for music education programs in under-resourced public high schools and honored Maren Morris, Brittney Spencer, and Live Nation Women’s Ali Harnell as the 2024 “Champions of the Year.”

To mark this exciting new chapter, Save The Music has rallied an incredible lineup of artists for an exclusive giveaway campaign hosted on the Propeller platform. Now through the end of February, fans can bid on over a dozen unique auction prizes from talents like Sabrina Carpenter, The War And Treaty, Denzel Curry, GHOST, Common x Pete Rock, Patti LaBelle, Blake Shelton, and more! Proceeds from the auction will directly support the creation of new music programs across the country as Save The Music proudly steps into its new era as an independent organization. Check out the auction here.

In 2025, Save The Music plans to further grow the scope of its K-12 music education grants to meet demand from students and educators for investment in hip hop and Latin music programs. STM’s J Dilla Music Tech Grant, which launched in 2018 in partnership with Pharrell’s agency I AM OTHER, Pay Jay Productions, Inc., and the Estate of James DeWitt Yancey is now live in over 100 schools nationwide. The grant supports high school programs focused on electronic music production, appealing to students interested in cutting-edge music technology.

Additionally, building on the success of their mariachi programs, STM will expand their middle school grants to include more Latin music genres, adding more percussion and other instruments for students and teachers exploring the culturally rich world of Latin music..

The success of the J Dilla Music Tech Grants and the expansion of the Latin music program exemplify STM’s commitment to empowering students nationwide through music programs that reflect the needs of their partner communities.

From: http://www.looktothestars.org/news/21112-save-the-music-goes-independent

Related past articles

Wyclef Jean Presents Music Technology Grant to South Philadelphia High School

Queen Latifah To Be Honored With Honorary Degree

VH1 Save The Music Foundation And Imagine Dragons Team Up For Music Education

Explore celebrities by social reach, cause, location, field and more with Insider Access →

Copyright © 2025 Look To The Stars. PCEs have been shown to significantly mitigate the negative impact of traumatic or adverse childhood events (ACEs). Children with life-altering diagnoses who come to SeriousFun camps leave more able to cope with medical trauma, more resilient, and, most importantly, more hopeful about the future.

According to Blake Maher, CEO of SeriousFun Children’s Network, “The singular goal of The Year of SeriousFun is to grow Paul’s vision to serve as many seriously ill children as possible around the world. To reach more children and to continue providing services at zero cost to these kids and families, we depend on the support of our volunteers—doctors, nurses, therapists, retirees, and college students, not to mention the donors whose financial contributions help make these life-changing experiences possible.”

With an entire year of planned events to raise awareness, SeriousFun is on a mission to recruit 10,000 new global volunteers. This year’s tentpole events include a star-studded gala at Lincoln Center where campers will perform with A-list celebrities on stage, an inclusive global music and dance celebration for campers, and the launch of a robust mental health initiative in the fall.

“My father believed in the importance of giving back,” said Clea Newman, Paul’s daughter and SeriousFun Ambassador. “Dad always said we are committed to giving these children one hundred percent… and, in return, the joy of these kids gives back one thousand percent to everyone who works with and supports them.”

From: http://www.looktothestars.org/news/21111-a-year-long-100th-birthday-celebration-for-hollywood-legend-paul-newman

Related past articles

Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and Bradley Cooper Announce Plans to Open a Second Location on Maryland's Eastern Shore

Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Gang Camp Hosts Star-Studded Virtual Celebration

Newman's Own Foundation Pledges $1 Million to The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp

Explore celebrities by social reach, cause, location, field and more with Insider Access →

Copyright © 2025 Look To The Stars. The inaugural Ruth’s Room will be a state-of-the-art youth music space operated by Philadelphia nonprofit Rock to the Future. By engaging local organizations and volunteers, Ruth’s Room will unite communities around a collective project and highlight the strengths of our shared humanity.

“Ruth’s Room reflects the heart of our mission: building bridges and creating opportunities for those who need it most to find community,” said Stacy Huston, Executive Director of SixDegrees.org. “We’re thrilled to launch this program and invite communities across the country to join us in honoring Ruth’s legacy.”

Ruth Bacon was a lifelong educator in Philadelphia, teaching at Charlestown Playhouse and the Community College of Philadelphia. Ruth dedicated her life to designing influential programs for children, including the Philadelphia School District’s Parents Cooperative Nursery, which required parents to spend time in the classroom with their children. Ruth was a leader in the opening of Philadelphia’s Please Touch Museum, a play-based, interactive experience for young people. Beyond education, Ruth was a strong advocate for youth and justice, playing a pivotal role in establishing the Family Resource Center at Graterford Prison in 1985 and developing a program to facilitate frequent meaningful visits between children and their incarcerated fathers, which helped to maintain a bond during a time typically exposing children to trauma and estrangement.

“My mom was so selfless, always thinking about what she could do for others, whether it was us kids or someone else’s children,” said Kevin Bacon. “Ruth’s Room is a beautiful way to honor her heart for justice and community.”

SixDegrees.org, a leading nonprofit dedicated to fostering connection and community, is seeking partners to expand its impactful Ruth’s Room initiative across the country. The organization invites collaboration with community centers, prison nurseries, schools, creative venues, outdoor spaces and other unique locations that align with its vision of inspiring connection and meaningful change. They’re also looking for partners to bring programming to these spaces. If you have an idea for a Ruth’s Room in your community or want to learn more or get involved, visit SixDegrees.org/ruthsroom.

From: http://www.looktothestars.org/news/21102-sixdegrees-org-launches-program-to-transform-community-spaces-in-honor-of-kevin-bacons-mother

Related past articles

Warner Bros. On occasion, we’re good for a ‘Chimes of Freedom’ (at least Bob Dylan is), but if we’re honest, the freedom musicians are most interested in is our own.

“Rock and roll promised a freedom that could not be contained or silenced, an international language of liberation. The freedom songs of the folk singers went electric, the coded messages of gospel music burst into the full flower of funk and soul.

“Is the Medal of Freedom a nostalgia act? Is freedom itself a nostalgia act? Maybe the idea of freedom as a guarantee. But not freedom as a mighty, worthy struggle.

“Lincoln spoke of a ‘new birth of freedom.’ I think he meant that freedom must be re-won by each generation.
