Sie resultieren aus dem ausgeprägten Sinn gleich mehrerer Angehöriger des Coburger Herzogshauses (ernestinische Wettiner) für die Grundlagen von Bildung, Wissenschaft und kulturellem Leben. Es ging um solides Zusammentragen von inhaltlicher Substanz und um Vollständigkeit. Das Bewusstsein, der Reformation zum Durchbruch verholfen zu haben, war für die Ernestiner konstitutiv – vom 16. Jahrhundert bis hin zu Prinzgemahl Albert von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha (1819-1861). Die ausgezeichnete Sammlung der Landesbibliothek Coburg zu Reformation und Konfessionalismus hat hier ihre Begründung. Im Mittelpunkt steht die vorzügliche Kollektion Wittenberger Bibeln.
