remains a classic.","long":"October 1959, America was deep into the 'age of unease' as viewers took their first steps into 'another dimension, not only of sight & sound but of mind. Their 'next stop, The Twilight Zone.\n\nThrough these doors of perception they have forever dwelled in stories of pixelated shadow and substance. A black & white realm presided over by a neat little man in a sharp suit whose perpetual cigarette smoke forever curls upwards as he ushers you into his realm. The aliens are among us and due on Maple Street but maybe we are the monsters? Are we on earth & is it dying? Where is everybody? Why are they vanishing & is that death hitching a ride or knocking at my door looking uncannily like Robert Redford. And why is Captain Kirk screaming at that thing on the wing that no one else can see?!\n\nRod Serling, America's most famous television playwright, astonished people with his announcement that he was to explore the realms of science fiction and fantasy in a new anthology show. Like Dennis Potter starting up Dr Who. But Serling, an impeccable liberal haunted by war, racial strife & the possibilities of nuclear Armageddon smuggled stories of conscience, doubt and possibility into 5 seasons of a remarkable show that has never died & has been revisited for a fourth time with Jordan Peele as host. In truth, nothing can match a realm of the American weird that Serling made uniquely his own.\n\nIn this special Radio 4 Extra documentary Alan Dein hears from Serling's family, veteran directors Richard Donner & John Frankenheimer, actors Earl Holliman (star of the first ever episode) & Jean Marsh as well as the writers Jonathan Lethem & David Thomson & Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker. 2 Twilight Zone radio episodes accompany the documentary.\n\nProducer Mark Burman"},"image_url":"https://web.archive.org/web/20191027173339/https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/{recipe}/p07ns5hp.jpg","duration":{"value":10800,"label":"180 mins"},"progress":null,"availability":{"from":"2019-09-28T11:01:40Z","to":"2019-10-28T21:00:00Z","label":"Expires on Monday 9:00pm"},"container":null,"uris":[],"activities":[]},{"id":"m0009rys","type":"playable_item","urn":"urn:bbc:radio:episode:m0009ryt","network":{"id":"bbc_radio_four","key":"radio4","short_title":"Radio 4","logo_url":"https://web.archive.org/web/20191027173339/https://sounds.files.bbci.co.uk/2.0.2/networks/bbc_radio_four/{type}_{size}.{format}"},"release":{"date":"2019-10-27T00:00:00Z","label":"27 Oct 2019"},"titles":{"primary":"China and the World","secondary":"Who Dares Wins?","tertiary":null},"synopses":{"short":"Is China's engagement with the wider world a 'win-win' or just a one-sided grab for power?","medium":"Isabel Hilton's three-part series exploring China's global relations begins with its Belt and Road Initiative which aims to boost economic power and security. But who really wins?","long":"Isabel Hilton, the eminent authority on China and chief executive of chinadialogue.net, presents three programmes looking at contemporary China's relationships with the wider world. \nThe series looks at the Chinese government's efforts to win over \"hearts and minds\" with a sophisticated media strategy and at the efforts Beijing is making on its own account and in international organisations to \"build a Chinese world\". \nIn this first programme, Hilton focuses on the Chinese government's flagship Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This claims to increase the economic security and power of both the countries whose infrastructure is improved by Beijing's inward investment and China itself. The Chinese Communist Party refers to it as a win-win for both parties. But is it? \nTalking to leading experts on China, its politics and its economy, Hilton discovers the motivations for China's overtures to countries on its immediate borders - such as Pakistan, Cambodia and Kazakhstan - and much further afield in Africa, Latin America and even Europe. If these countries are getting new ports and high-speed railway links as well as bridges and tunnels, what does Beijing want - and get - in return? \nEarlier this year, President Xi Jinping said those involved in BRI projects should be China's ambassador but, Hilton asks, what exactly does that mean?\nAnd although some projects in central Asia and Africa are already completed, they haven't always been completed to the expected standards. Elsewhere, the debt the recipient countries have taken on with China to fund their much-desired new facilities has proved so onerous for them that Beijing has needed to intervene to keep things on track. \nSo just how well is China's launch into the global big time going?\n\nProducer Simon Coates"},"image_url":"https://web.archive.org/web/20191027173339/https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/{recipe}/p07r2kqp.jpg","duration":{"value":1680,"label":"28 mins"},"progress":null,"availability":{"from":"2019-10-27T13:34:00Z","to":null,"label":"Available for over a year"},"container":{"type":"series","id":"m0009tm9","urn":"urn:bbc:radio:series:m0009tm9","title":"China and the World","synopses":{"short":"Isabel Hilton looks at contemporary China's relationships with the wider world.","medium":"Isabel Hilton presents three programmes looking at contemporary China's relationships with the wider world","long":null},"activities":[]},"uris":[{"type":"latest","id":null,"label":"Latest","uri":"/v2/programmes/playable?container=m0009tm9&sort=sequential&type=episode"}],"activities":[]},{"id":"b00rmsj0","type":"playable_item","urn":"urn:bbc:radio:episode:b00rmssw","network":{"id":"bbc_radio_four","key":"radio4","short_title":"Radio 4","logo_url":"https://web.archive.org/web/20191027173339/https://sounds.files.bbci.co.uk/2.0.2/networks/bbc_radio_four/{type}_{size}.{format}"},"release":{"date":"2010-03-30T00:00:00Z","label":"30 Mar 2010"},"titles":{"primary":"GCHQ: Cracking the Code","secondary":null,"tertiary":null},"synopses":{"short":"BBC security correspondent Gordon Corera goes inside Britain's secret listening station.","medium":"The BBC's security correspondent Gordon Corera gains exclusive access to the ultra-secret Government Communication Headquarters at Cheltenham.","long":"The BBC's Security Correspondent Gordon Corera gains unprecedented access to Britain's ultra secret listening station where super computers monitor the world's communications traffic and Britain's global eavesdropping and electronic surveillance operations are conducted. \n\nThe layers of secrecy which have surrounded GCHQ's work are peeled away - what exactly does it do and who is it listening to?\n\nThe programme explores the wide area covered by signals intelligence - from looking for terrorists planning attacks against the United Kingdom to supporting military operations of the type underway in Afghanistan. \n\nA team from the Counter terrorism section describes what it is like to listen in on terrorists' conversations and the constant battle to predict where the next attack will come from: \"I don't think you would be human if you didn't go home at night and couldn't switch off and thought 'Oh my God. What happens if . . .?'\" What about the ethics of eavesdropping and how does their work compare to the way it is portrayed on television in series like 'Spooks'?\n\nCode-breakers talk about their work, attempting to find a chink in the armour of a carefully encrypted message sent by a terrorist or a foreign government. \"It just feels amazing really,\" when there is a breakthrough, says one. \"I mean you feel like you've won\". \n\nThe programme looks at the technological challenges posed by the internet and the threat of cyber warfare, which has led to the establishment of a new cyber operations centre at Cheltenham. It also explores the scientific and mathematical breakthroughs which have been achieved at GCHQ, including the discovery of public key encryption, used when we shop on the internet. \n\nThere's a tour of the building's four great computer halls, containing racks and racks of IT equipment and covering around ten thousand square metres. \"I could actually fit Wembley football pitch into three of the halls quite comfortably,' says the man in charge of making sure that the equipment doesn't crash. \n\nGordon Corera challenges the director Iain Lobban. Two of these institutions still function as psychiatric hospitals. \n\nEach has unusual, beautiful and terrifying objects on show ranging from straight-jackets to lobotomy tools, and also collections of 'outsider art', but each is also strikingly successful at evoking for their visitors different (and sometimes wildly different) views of madness - strange, worrisome, extreme mental states.\n\nRanging from a pitch-dark solitary confinement cell to the brightly coloured papier-mache dolls made by long term inmates, from the era of shackles to the era of the talking cure, the history of Europe's reaction to the madness in its midst as shown by these museums is long and still shifting. James I even campaigned against it, but the aristocracy wanted to retain it as a legal way of settling disputes 'honourably'. The practice continued until it was eventually outlawed at the end of the nineteenth century. Until it was, the duel has a fascinating place in British history as a means of 'solving' dispute and novelists and playwrights have been using it as a way of spicing up plots and intrigue along the way. \n\nAs a youngster, Justin Champion loved adventure novels that were jam-packed with sword play - The Three Musketeers, The Prisoner of Zenda and Scott's Waverley series. He has always been intrigued as to why men felt the urgency to defend their honour in such a dangerous way. In this programme, he tracks the history of the duel, its influence, some particularly pivotal duels, is shown how to sword fight and thinks he's found the reason why duelling eventually ceased as a practice in the UK.\n\nJustin talks to experts of Shakespeare to discuss how frequently the Bard picked up on the duelling debate in many of his plays including Romeo and Juliet. He visits the Royal Armouries Collection in Leeds to witness a sword fight. Justin is shown the techniques and is handed a sword for a tutorial. He charts the move from sword to pistol and gets a tour behind the scenes at the Royal Armouries Collection to look at some important swords and pistols involved in duelling.\n\nJustin also talks to fellow historians about significant duels and their political and literary impact. The duel has even been used by Cabinet Ministers and Prime Ministers as a way of settling their differences. We hear from BBC Diplomatic Correspondent, James Landale (who tells the story of his ancestor's involvement in the last fatal duel in Scotland in 1826) and who also tells listeners about Wellington's engagement in a duel in Battersea.\n\nListeners will also hear from a social historian of the 19th century about how the meaning of \"honour\" changed for men during this period and how a pension arrangement changed forever as the willingness of men to accept an invitation to \"pistols at dawn\".\n\nProducer: Sarah Taylor \n\nFirst broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May 2010."},"image_url":"https://web.archive.org/web/20191027173339/https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/{recipe}/p01gq9k0.jpg","duration":{"value":1800,"label":"30 mins"},"progress":null,"availability":{"from":"2019-10-15T06:03:48Z","to":"2019-11-15T01:00:00Z","label":"Available for 18 days"},"container":null,"uris":[],"activities":[]},{"id":"b010m9tl","type":"playable_item","urn":"urn:bbc:radio:episode:b010mckx","network":{"id":"bbc_radio_four","key":"radio4","short_title":"Radio 4","logo_url":"https://web.archive.org/web/20191027173339/https://sounds.files.bbci.co.uk/2.0.2/networks/bbc_radio_four/{type}_{size}.{format}"},"release":{"date":"2011-04-26T00:00:00Z","label":"26 Apr 2011"},"titles":{"primary":"Fallout: The Legacy of Chernobyl","secondary":null,"tertiary":null},"synopses":{"short":"Nick Ross investigates the health impact of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident.","medium":"Nick Ross travels to the Ukraine to uncover the true health impact of the radiation leak 25 years after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident.","long":"Events in Japan have reignited controversy around the safety of nuclear energy, reviving memories of the world's worst nuclear accident, at Chernobyl. \n\nBut just how bad was the worst? Her death provoked outrage and revulsion throughout the world. The popular account involves the central character, the prototype for Indiana Jones, Hiram Bingham, who in 1911 stumbled upon the ancient ruins of an Inca city lost in the jungle. As Peru celebrates the centenary of it being found, writer and explorer Hugh Thomson follows Bingham's footsteps into the Andes to unearth the truth and the controversies about its discovery. \n\nSo, was Bingham the first person to see Machu Picchu? A re-examination of his classic book, Lost City of the Incas, which describes the expedition and subsequent archaeological studies of the site, says otherwise. Behind the words is a determined and ambitious Yale professor who saw Machu Picchu as his ticket to world renown. In his quest, Bingham all too often blurred fact with fiction.\n\nAs a historian, he was ill equipped to interpret the artefacts he'd brought back to Yale but nevertheless put forward suppositions about why the Incas built Machu Picchu and what they used it for. Inflating its importance and hence his own, these myths - for example, that it was a spiritual retreat for the Virgins of the Sun - are still perpetuated today. So what was its real purpose?\n\nThe thousands of Inca artefacts Bingham took out of Peru have been cause for controversy as well, culminating in a fiercely fought court case. The Peruvian government sued Yale University for breaking the contract to return the Machu Picchu artefacts. Finally, the case has been settled and many of the artefacts have been returned - just in time for Peru's centenary celebrations, which are as much about reclaiming national pride and identity as world heritage.\n\n\nProducer: Dom Byrne\n\nA Blakeway production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in October 2011."},"image_url":"https://web.archive.org/web/20191027173339/https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/{recipe}/p01h6sq9.jpg","duration":{"value":1800,"label":"30 mins"},"progress":null,"availability":{"from":"2016-11-26T01:29:01Z","to":null,"label":"Available for over a year"},"container":null,"uris":[],"activities":[]},{"id":"b0bf6291","type":"playable_item","urn":"urn:bbc:radio:episode:b0bf6295","network":{"id":"bbc_radio_four","key":"radio4","short_title":"Radio 4","logo_url":"https://web.archive.org/web/20191027173339/https://sounds.files.bbci.co.uk/2.0.2/networks/bbc_radio_four/{type}_{size}.{format}"},"release":{"date":"2018-08-14T00:00:00Z","label":"14 Aug 2018"},"titles":{"primary":"The Deep State","secondary":null,"tertiary":null},"synopses":{"short":"Journalist David Aaronovitch explores the idea of the Deep State.","medium":"Journalist David Aaronovitch goes in search of the Deep State. Is the Deep State just another example of conspiracy theory in politics, or is it a more serious concern than that - and does it exist here in Britain? \n\nDrawing on expertise from a range of countries and political contexts, from the USA to the UK, from Russia and Turkey to Zimbabwe and Greece, journalist and writer David Aaronovitch goes in search of this most elusive idea. \n\nThe term Deep State may well be at the more respectable end of conspiracy theory but the question why it keeps resurfacing is an interesting one. This programme draws on both recent and historic cases, from Eisenhower's military-industrial complex and Harold Wilson's concerns about MI5 in the 1960s and 70s to the reppearance of the term around the deposition of Robert Mugabe and in Donald Trump's public rhetoric, railing against what he calls the \"criminal Deep State\". \n\nNot everyone is convinced. Though her story has been largely ignored when compared to Robert Johnson, Leadbelly and other Blues artists of the time. \n\nIn a journey that starts along the banks of the Mississippi in a post Katrina New Orleans and ends in the promised land of the Blues, Chicago, Mark Lamarr explores her story, the flood itself and the development of the Blues that emerged around the Great Migration. \n\n\nProducer: Rob Alexander\nA Pier Production for BBC Radio 4."},"image_url":"https://web.archive.org/web/20191027173339/https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/{recipe}/p01h81h7.jpg","duration":{"value":1800,"label":"30 mins"},"progress":null,"availability":{"from":"2011-12-12T17:14:49Z","to":null,"label":"Available for over a year"},"container":null,"uris":[],"activities":[]},{"id":"m0009ksn","type":"playable_item","urn":"urn:bbc:radio:episode:m0009ksp","network":{"id":"bbc_radio_four","key":"radio4","short_title":"Radio 4","logo_url":"https://web.archive.org/web/20191027173339/https://sounds.files.bbci.co.uk/2.0.2/networks/bbc_radio_four/{type}_{size}.{format}"},"release":{"date":"2019-10-22T00:00:00Z","label":"22 Oct 2019"},"titles":{"primary":"The Hand Detectives","secondary":null,"tertiary":null},"synopses":{"short":"How the forensic science of hand identification is being used to investigate crime.","medium":"Child abusers take elaborate steps to avoid exposure. An infrared snapshot of a man’s arm, taken from a computer camera in the middle of the night. They wanted to know if she, as one of the world’s most respected forensic anatomists, could find any details that could match the limb in the picture, to a potential child abuse suspect. \n\nThat case sparked the development of a new kind of forensic science - Hand Identification. A science that in the past 13 years has aided in securing convictions in some of the most high profile child abuse cases in the UK.\n\nIn this programme we explore how Sue and her teams in Dundee and Lancaster University have developed the science of Hand Identification, how it can be used in conjunction with digital forensic techniques to identify offenders, and how by creating a library of hands, Artificial Intelligence can be developed to quickly and accurately assess hands and link child abuse cases around the globe - protecting not just children, but the investigators who put their own mental health at risk as they work to protect the most vulnerable.\n\nProduced by Elizabeth Ann Duffy\nIllustration by Seonaid MacKay"},"image_url":"https://web.archive.org/web/20191027173339/https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/{recipe}/p07r2x4q.jpg","duration":{"value":1680,"label":"28 mins"},"progress":null,"availability":{"from":"2019-10-22T10:06:59Z","to":null,"label":"Available for over a year"},"container":null,"uris":[],"activities":[]},{"id":"b01s474z","type":"playable_item","urn":"urn:bbc:radio:episode:b01s4762","network":{"id":"bbc_radio_four_extra","key":"radio4extra","short_title":"Radio 4 Extra","logo_url":"https://web.archive.org/web/20191027173339/https://sounds.files.bbci.co.uk/2.0.2/networks/bbc_radio_four_extra/{type}_{size}.{format}"},"release":{"date":"2013-04-29T00:00:00Z","label":"29 Apr 2013"},"titles":{"primary":"Sid James: Not Just a Dirty Laugh","secondary":null,"tertiary":null},"synopses":{"short":"Lee Mack uncovers a unique insight into actor Sid James's lesser-known work.","medium":"4 Extra Debut. He later became a household name as the star of the Carry On series of films\n\n\nAs Lee Mack discovers there's more skill to Sid James' performances than is often evident. He'd already made numerous screen appearances before Hancock and the Carry Ons with straight roles and comic support in films by Powell and Pressburger and Ealing Comedies. His early radio work includes parts alongside Peter Sellers and Dennis Price, on stage he performed in Guys and Dolls and starred in Citizen James his own television situation comedy scripted for him by Galton and Simpson.\n\nPresenting a fascinating collection of extracts never before broadcast on radio this documentary puts the emphasis on the unfamiliar with interviewees adding another dimension to Sid's story by revealing his early career and assessing his copious talents."},"image_url":"https://web.archive.org/web/20191027173339/https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/{recipe}/p01jx52j.jpg","duration":{"value":1680,"label":"28 mins"},"progress":null,"availability":{"from":"2016-04-17T23:51:48Z","to":null,"label":"Available for over a year"},"container":null,"uris":[],"activities":[]},{"id":"b08k2fh2","type":"playable_item","urn":"urn:bbc:radio:episode:b08k2fmj","network":{"id":"bbc_radio_four","key":"radio4","short_title":"Radio 4","logo_url":"https://web.archive.org/web/20191027173339/https://sounds.files.bbci.co.uk/2.0.2/networks/bbc_radio_four/{type}_{size}.{format}"},"release":{"date":"2017-03-28T00:00:00Z","label":"28 Mar 2017"},"titles":{"primary":"The Origins of the American Dream","secondary":null,"tertiary":null},"synopses":{"short":"The American Dream: where does the idea come from and how has its meaning changed?","medium":"Documentary.
