Its a really good book of the genre. This book has all the elements there: hard-boiled old bugger of a detective, terrifying abduction and captivity, inspiring victim determined to live and die on her own terms despite her powerlessness and the inch-by-inch figuring-it-all-out from aforementioned hard-boiled character obligatory chalk-to-his-cheese offsider.<br><br>It could be the translation, or it could be the impossibility of polishing a turd, but the writing was really awful. Just the language, the words jarred, the rhythm was jerky and I struggled to keep going.<br><br>BUT (and here is why it gets two stars) I needed to find out what happened. How it all ended up. Despite the sludgy prose I became invested in Merete Lynggaard and her brother Uffe. Didn't care so much for Detective Carl Mørck, morose slob that he is.<br><br>Because to err is human and to spoil is just not on, I'll refrain from doing so. But if you do pick this one up, don't be surprised if you toss it to one side then grudgingly take it up again and slog through to the ending, just to find out what happens. <span class="rating">(
