Il passe quelque temps dans l’Atlantique Sud puis, en septembre 1578, il franchit le détroit de Magellan et entre dans l’océan Pacifique. Après avoir harcelé des navires et des établissements espagnols sur les côtes de l’Amérique du Sud et de l’Amérique Centrale, il s’empare de Huatulco, au Mexique. C’est là que, au printemps de 1579, il prépare son voyage de retour. La pensée géographique de l’époque subissait fortement l’influence d’Abraham Ortelius, dont la célèbre mappemonde plaçait la côte septentrionale de l’Amérique du Nord au sud du 60<sup>e</sup> degré et faisait voir, au delà, une mer polaire reliée à l’Atlantique par un passage du Nord-Ouest et à l’océan Pacifique par le détroit d’Anian. Drake décida de tenter le retour en Angleterre par cette route polaire. Il partit de Huatulco le 16 avril mais, quelque six semaines plus tard, le mauvais temps l’obligeait à changer d’idée ; il traversa éventuellement le Pacifique et l’océan Indien et contourna l’Afrique pour rentrer en Europe.</p> <p id="paragraph_67905" class="NormalParagraph">L’hypothèse selon laquelle il aurait vu le Canada se fonde sur la nature des vents et des courants qui règnent ordinairement dans le Nord du Pacifique au printemps. Ils décrivent un grand cercle dans le sens des aiguilles d’une montre -phénomène qu’a noté Claret de Fleurieu, officier de marine français, d’où son nom de « courant circulaire de Fleurieu ». Les voiliers doivent en tenir compte s’ils ne veulent pas passer des jours à lutter contre des vents debout.</p> <p id="paragraph_298130" class="NormalParagraph">Après avoir quitté Huatulco, Drake navigua longtemps vers l’Ouest, puis il mit le cap sur le Nord. Le 5 juin, il était encore loin de la côte nord-américaine, quelque part entre le 42<sup>e</sup> et le 48<sup>e</sup> degré de latitude ; le 17 juin, il jetait l’ancre dans une baie près de San Francisco.
