Their third full-length feels massive and oceanic, merging the furious intensity of metal and the wigged-out guitar heroics of psych rock with post-rock’s epic sense of scale. ILION is the kind of music where you listen to it and think to yourself, “This came from only three people?” It sure did, and SLIFT’s utter ferocity is way more than a tempest in a teacup. It reaches outwards for miles and creates new zeniths within unforeseen horizons of rock.<br><br>SLIFT is made up of brothers Jean and Remí Fossat and Canek Flores, who first met the brothers Fossat at (of all things) school. After the band formally came together in 2016, they quickly made their 2017 debut EP, Space Is the Key, which merged stoner rock’s heaviness with the sugar-rush qualities of garage rock. From there, things only got weirder: The trio experimented with faster tempos and bongos(!) on the following year’s full-length La Planeté Inexploreé, and in 2019, their KEXP session recorded at the Trans Musicales festival in Rennes became a viral sensation, racking up more than 1.4 million YouTube views.<br><br>UMMON from 2020 represented SLIFT’s pivot towards the celestially crushing confines of psych-metal, marked by Remí’s rolling basslines and Flores’s relentless skin-pounding. But nothing in their already-estimable catalog could prepare you for ILION, a huge-sounding and melodically dense record that at once recalls Godspeed! You Black Emperor’s perpetually uplifting surge, the passionate burn of post-hardcore legends …And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead, Led Zep’s psychotic blues-rock mysticism, and the psychedelic swirl of Swedish experimental greats Goat.<br><br>But reducing ILION to a list of reference points would be missing the point—specifically, that you really have to sit down and experience this thing and let it take over your ear space. The record marks the band’s second Sub Pop release, following last year’s Singles Club 7” release of “Unseen” b/w “The Real Unseen,” which were outtakes from the UMMON sessions and offered a mere taste of the pure expansiveness on display here. Over eight tracks and 75+ minutes, SLIFT unleash the fury with walls of guitar and multi-part song structures that make you feel as if you’re being taken on a true journey—from the pure oblivion of ILION’s title track and the stretched-out abandon of centerpiece “Weavers’ Weft” to the intense climax of the 12-and-a-half-minute epic “The Story That Has Never Been Told.”<br><br>But what is this journey? To hear SLIFT tell it, Joseph Campbell would be proud of the thematic path laid out before the listeners on ILION, which is named after the Ancient Greek word for the city of Troy and, conceptually speaking, picks up where UMMON left off: “This is an album constructed in the manner of a Homeric story,” the band explains. “Where the two records differ is that ILION is about human emotions and feelings, whereas UMMON was telling an epic story with a distant view. ILION represents the fall of humanity and the rebirth of all things in time and space.”<br><br>Heavy shit, to be sure—but fear not, because you don’t need a 12-sided die and a copy of The Odyssey to get what SLIFT are dishing out on ILION. It has taken days to recover but just one good song, one glimmer of hope and a touch of class gets the brain in motion once more. Pools of Colour, the latest work from Junodream, will pull you out and kick your head in. It is needed. Do what must be done to get back on course – listen to Pools of Colour, sprint around your room, clean your desk as though the mess inside your drawers is what puts you off. Centre your attention with an exceptional piece of music, their shifting electronic qualities affected by a Radiohead quality. <br><br>That is not to say the band is identical in motion or tone to the Thom Yorke-led unit, far from it, but the appeal and unwavering commitment Junodream must layer upon layer in each of their tracks is mesmerising. It gives wild and shifting tones in opener Fever Dream a new level of exceptional quality. Those whispered vocals, the clangs and small flourishes compound into a masterful first track for Junodream’s debut, a remarkable series of songs. Death Drive feels like a nice transition into the weighty tones and jitters of radio static-like appeal on The Beach. Its interjections of drifting vocals, the shimmering appeal of its guitar work, and those echoes and sliding notes are also thrown up on Sit in the Park. <br><br>Slight tinges of grunge filter through the pangs of shameless openness – not quite an anti-romance song but the burning strings which flow through it ever-so-slightly are a monumental addition. Pools of Colour benefits thoroughly from being open, disgruntled by its difficulties but accepting of the heartbreak and horrors which await. Anti-drugs peddling on Alien Adventure still has the high and mighty appeal to it, the same constants of the wall of sound style Pools of Colour has. However, it is keen to make space for lyricist Ed Vyvyan who charts these claustrophobic feelings with confidence and a real desire to pull through, to give his listeners a shot at doing the same. Pools of Colour is a dark record, filled with the constants of paranoia which comes from a lack of sleep, but in its warmer corners, pieces like Happiness Advantage, comes to a real urgency to put an arm around the listener, to assure them something will change. <br><br>That it does – and for Junodream it occurs slowly but surely throughout this, a real turning point in album closer The Oranges. Breathe, breathe breathe. That repetition is all you need to hear – the moment of clarity, the penny dropping, whatever you wish to call it can be found on this final track. Junodream impresses on their debut but, more than anything else, sounds secure and confident in a style charted before them and no doubt after them, but handles the middle ground with an intense and justifiable appearance. Within this piece is a heartfelt and troubled achievement, a desire to say the right things but getting it in the wrong order. Mistakes are made, but relax in the ways you know how to – Pools of Colour demands it. It’s a sound that smacks of open mic nights and inebriated crowds, as though their careers remain rooted on a pub stool. <br><br>The inexplicable rise of Scottish troubadour Gerry Cinnamon might be to blame. After all, in his wake, the Billy Bragg-endorsed (more on that in mo) Liverpudlian electrician-turned-folk-singer Jamie Webster has arrived. But whereas Cinnamon’s stompers are sandpaper coarse, rough enough to inflict instant cluster headaches (the sort of sledgehammer pummel that could have worked wonders for intelligence agencies in Guantanamo), Webster’s writing has greater nuance; musically as deft as the lyrics are defiant. <br><br>Following the top-ten chart placings of We Get By and Moments, he returns with his third album, 10 For the People. It’s quite wonderful. And yet, things don’t start promisingly. ‘Better Day’ is a kitchen sink drama that’s had the kitchen sink tossed recklessly at it. A tale of unions, picket lines and blue-collar altruism, it’s the sort of overcooked, cloying pop number you’d expect to stumble across on an eighties re-run of Top of the Pops. Lyrics such as “I’ll stand up for the people because everybody’s equal” may make it noble, its bombast is almost enough to turn you into a scab. <br><br>Things radically improve by what follows. ‘Voice of the Voiceless’ may be ripe for festival recap montages of sun-soaked crowds, drug-addled and in bucket hats, but it’s an irresistible slice of radio pop. released on 16 February 2024 via Lucky Number Music. It was recorded in Eastbourne, United Kingdom, and produced by Jonathan Gilmore. Preceded by five singles including "Bootleg Firecracker", "Highlands" and "Dramamine", the band will embark on tour of Australia and the United States in May 2024 to promote the album.<br><br>In March 2021, Middle Kids released their second studio album, Today We're the Greatest. It won Best Rock Album at the 2021 ARIA Music Awards, and peaked at number five on the ARIA Charts.<br><br>Faith Crisis Pt 1 was recorded in five weeks from June 2022 in Eastbourne, United Kingdom, alongside producer Jonathan Gilmore. In these sessions, the band experimented with synths and organs for the first time. Frontwoman Hannah Joy said that – unlike their previous albums, which were very intertwined with their daily lives, with "snippets written in sound checks, visiting a studio whilst on the road [and] recording vocals after doing the dishes at home" – in making Faith Crisis Pt 1, they sought separation from daily life and the going-ons of society by "carv[ing] out the space and world for making this record, which, yeah, was awesome – but absolutely fried the mainframes".<br><br>The lyrical themes on Faith Crisis Pt 1 explore the role of belief, particularly in a society deprived of hope, according to Joy. It was released on February 23, 2024, making it their label debut on Mom + Pop, and their first studio album in six years since 2018's Little Dark Age. It features a guest appearance by French singer Christine and the Queens, making it the first feature on an MGMT album.<br><br>On September 21, 2023, Andrew VanWyngarden posted a picture of a vinyl "test pressing" with a banana on top on Reddit, accompanied by the caption "elf of soils". The latter was reported to be an anagram of what would be the album title. The title was first hinted at on April 5 through a photo captioned "Just got done cooking L.O.L." by VanWyngarden. <br><br>Loss of Life is the long-awaited follow-up to 2018's Little Dark Age. The album was produced by MGMT (Andrew VanWyngarden, Ben Goldwasser) along with Patrick Wimberly. Longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann mixed the album as he has done on the group's past four full lengths. On Loss of Life, additional production was supplied by Daniel Lopatin and James Richardson. Brian Burton provides additional production on “Mother Nature” and Miles A. Robinson served as associate producer and engineer across the album.<br><br>In a statement, the duo revealed that they were "very proud" of the album and described it as a "relatively painless birth after a lengthy gestation period". Musically speaking, they explained to have run at around "20% adult contemporary" but "no more than this". Announced on October 31, Loss of Life will serve as their first studio offering in six years and their first since leaving Columbia Records. Warm to the touch, like looking up at the trees on a cloudless day. On No, the four-piece's (Mike Alfieri, Ruby Mars, Jamison Murphy, Austyn Wohlers) debut album, those trees, that cloudless sky, have become haunted, thorny, stormy. It takes Tomato Flower from buttoned-up, almost technically formalist psych pop to something more urgent, raw, emotionally immediate. No is messier, more expansive, and through all of its chaos, the band’s most rigorous artistic statement to date.<br><br>No is the band’s first effort made entirely in person, the first thing tracked in a studio instead of in a bedroom. It is a highly collaborative record written and recorded by everyone, partially made live. It is very much the byproduct of a band that has done some serious touring, following a coast-to-coast tour with Animal Collective in the summer of 2022. On No, the drums are aggressive, the bass is fuller and more direct. The guitars are distorted and disorientingly complex. Wohlers’ and Murphy’s vocals are meaty, fully loaded, in your face.<br><br>Lead single “Destroyer,” has co-lead vocalist Jamison Murphy practically screaming over angular guitars, oscillating in a sonic space somewhere between the prettiness of Broadcast and the sludge of Jesus Lizard. The song feels like kicking a soccer ball through wet cement, impossible, sisyphean, but also weirdly beautiful. It also presents an early entry point to one of No’s major conceptual underpinnings: that of the breakup between Wohlers and Murphy, which occurred during the composition of the album.<br><br>It wouldn’t be fair to just call No a break up album. It’s far more complicated with that. No is a record about negation: I will not do this, you cannot tell me what to do, we are not living in a utopia, don’t be delusional. No embraces a kind of brutal realism, a confrontation of life that only happens when you wizen up a little bit. “Saint,” explores the aphasia and resentment that follows a tumultuous love affair, intense feelings on every end of every spectrum. The baseline stumbles and falls into the earth, almost unable to pick itself back up again. Wohlers’ voice sounds like it is being caught in her throat. “In time/I found that you/started it,” she sings.<br><br>No has its foot not just in realism and lucid emotional resonance, but, like in Tomato’s Flower’s past work, the fantastical, too. “Sally & Me,” reappropriates Gerard de Nerval images, with its stonelight and metal, its angel wings and its softness. “Harlequin,” treats a bumbling friend like a pierrot, a titular harlequin where their fuck ups get weirder and weirder in each passing second. All of it is a brutal delight, a departure from the past, a nod to a startling present. Tomato Flower is no longer a pop band. A double album, it completes a trilogy that began with its predecessor, 2022's Torpedo.<br><br>Lead singer, songwriter and guitarist Grant Nicholas has said that the decision to release the record as a double album was made with the listener in mind, describing it as "almost like a musical production with an interval." He also described writing the album as a "musical pilgrimage" and a "labour of love", which resulted in a record of "undeniable Feeder".<br><br>Nicholas stated that "The Knock" is a "song about a highway or road of life and the journey in which it can take us on and the challenges we face along the way". In addition, he said that he had "a very clear visual image for "Soldiers of Love", almost like a film soundtrack. It's the first time we've recorded bagpipes on a Feeder track as we felt they would add to the slight Celtic feel of the song. It was originally going to stay more of an acoustic style track but I felt the song could be more cinematic and grander sonically."<br><br>The album was supported by a tour of the United Kingdom through March of 2024. Doing It Again Baby! is the second studio album and major-label debut by Norwegian singer-songwriter Girl in Red, released on 12 April 2024, through Columbia Records. Serving as the follow-up to her 2021 album If I Could Make It Go Quiet, it has been preceded by the release of three singles between February and March 2024: "Too Much", "Doing It Again Baby" and "You Need Me Now?", a collaboration with American singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter. To promote the album, Girl in Red will embark on the Doing It Again Tour, starting on 16 April 2024.<br><br>In an interview with NME following the release of her debut full-length studio album If I Could Make It Go Quiet, in April 2021, Girl in Red shared how she had already been "working on new sounds". characteristics: romance, panic, devotion and remorse, threaded together by an intentionally laser-focused love. It is her first full-length studio album release in four years since Future Nostalgia (2020). A world tour spanning from 12 April 2024 to 7 September 2024 was announced to support the album's release.<br><br>Cape Forestier is the sibling duo's first project since their soundtrack album Life is Strange in 2021, and first studio album in seven years following Snow in 2017. The duo describes the album as "holds a really special place in our hearts" and believes the album has a similar sound to their earlier records, but has been influenced "with all the branches of
