Paul, the apostle, is writing to Timothy, his young protégé, who is in Ephesus. The urgency in Paul's instruction suggests the importance of maintaining order and sound doctrine in the church during his absence. Historically, Ephesus was a major center of early Christianity, and the church there faced challenges from false teachings. This phrase also reflects the apostolic authority Paul held, as he was responsible for guiding and instructing the early churches.
Devote yourself
The call to devotion implies a continuous, intentional effort. Timothy is urged to focus his energies and priorities on specific spiritual practices. This reflects the broader biblical theme of diligence in one's faith, as seen in passages like 2 Timothy 2:15, where believers are encouraged to present themselves as approved workers. The Greek word used here for "devote" suggests a steadfast commitment, emphasizing the importance of these practices in the life of the church.
To the public reading of Scripture
Public reading of Scripture was a common practice in Jewish synagogues and was carried over into early Christian worship. This practice ensured that the congregation heard the Word of God, especially in a time when personal copies of the Scriptures were rare. The public reading also served to unify the community around the teachings of the faith. This practice is rooted in Old Testament traditions, such as the reading of the Law in Nehemiah 8:1-8, and highlights the importance of Scripture as the foundation of teaching and doctrine.
To exhortation
Exhortation involves encouraging and urging believers to live according to the teachings of Scripture. This is a pastoral role that Timothy is to fulfill, guiding the church in moral and spiritual growth. Exhortation is closely linked to the work of the Holy Spirit, who empowers believers to live out their faith. In Romans 12:8, exhortation is listed as a spiritual gift, indicating its importance in the edification of the church.
And to teaching
Teaching refers to the systematic instruction in the doctrines of the faith. Timothy is to ensure that the church is grounded in sound doctrine, countering false teachings that were prevalent in Ephesus. This aligns with the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20, where Jesus commands His disciples to teach all nations. Teaching is a critical function of church leadership, as it equips believers to understand and apply biblical truths in their lives.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Paul
The apostle who authored the letter to Timothy, providing guidance and instruction for church leadership and personal conduct.

2. Timothy
A young pastor and protégé of Paul, stationed in Ephesus, tasked with leading and teaching the church there.

3. Ephesus
A significant city in the early Christian world, known for its diverse population and the challenges of false teachings that Timothy had to address.

4. Public Reading of Scripture
A practice in early Christian worship where Scriptures were read aloud to the congregation, emphasizing the importance of God's Word.

5. Exhortation and Teaching
Key components of Timothy's ministry, involving encouraging believers and instructing them in sound doctrine.
Teaching Points
The Importance of Scripture
The public reading of Scripture is foundational for the church, ensuring that God's Word is central in worship and community life.

Role of Exhortation
Exhortation involves encouraging and urging believers to live out their faith, providing motivation and support in their spiritual journey.

Commitment to Teaching
Teaching is essential for grounding believers in sound doctrine, helping them discern truth from falsehood and grow in their understanding of God's will.

Leadership Responsibility
Church leaders, like Timothy, are called to be diligent in their duties, prioritizing the spiritual nourishment and edification of the congregation.

Personal Devotion
Believers are encouraged to personally engage with Scripture, allowing it to transform their lives and guide their actions.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from 1 Timothy 4

How does 1 Timothy 4:13’s emphasis on public Scripture reading fit in a diverse, pluralistic society that questions biblical authority?

What is the Bishops' Bible?

What are the doctrines of demons?

What defines expositional preaching?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(13) Till I come, give attendance to reading.--The words evidently imply a hope, perhaps even an expectation, on the part of St. Paul, that he would one day be enabled once more to visit the Church of Ephesus; but so long as that absence lasted, Timothy was to attend carefully to three special points in the public ministry in which he was, in the Apostle's absence, the chief officer.
The "reading" was that public reading of Scripture in the congregation--a practice borrowed from the synagogue service, when publicly the Law and the Prophets were read to the people assembled. (See Luke 4:16; Acts 13:15.) In these early Christian assemblies, about the year 66-67, the question arises, Were any Scriptures read in public besides the books of the Old Testament? No certain reply can be given: it is, however, probable, even at this very early date, that one at least of the older Gospels (probably St. Mark) was already known and used in the Christian churches, and read along with the Scriptures of the old covenant. That the reading of the "Gospels" very soon became a part of the regular service in the congregations of Christians is evident from the words of Justin Martyr, Apologia, i. 67, written in the first half of the first century.
To exhortation, to doctrine.--These both most probably refer to the public ministry in the congregation. The first, "exhortation," particularly applies to the feelings. The reading of the Scriptures must be followed by an earnest practical application of their teaching to the affairs of that life in the midst of which the Christian listener was living. The word "doctrine" suggests a public teaching directed rather to the understanding of the hearers. The idea of exposition, or even of dogmatic teaching, seems here included.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 13. - Heed for attendance, A.V.; teaching for doctrine, A.V. Till I come (1 Timothy 3:14; 1 Timothy 1:3). Reading (τῇ ἀναγνώσει). We see the beginning of reading the New Testament in the Christian assemblies in Ephesians 3:4; and Colossians 4:16; and generally in the fact of Epistles being addressed by the apostles to Churches.
