This article aims to ‘queer the transnational turn’ by considering what critical edge ‘regionalism’ might bring to the investigation of queer modernities in Asia from both contemporary and historical vantage points. The introductory section of the article provides a broad overview of the ‘transnational turn’ in queer studies, what we diagnose as the ‘area unconscious’ of queer studies in its exclusive critique of Western colonial modernity, and the related binary of cultural particularism versus Eurocentric universalism. Alternatively, we argue that the concept of regionalism can be productively mobilized in order to study the various scales of queer sexualities that traffic within and circulate across Southeast Asia, Australia, imperial China, and contemporary Sinophone cultures (Sinitic-language communities on the margins of or outside mainland China). Through a paired reading of Johann S. Lee’s Singaporean queer novel, Peculiar Chris (1992), and Su Chao-Bin and John Woo’s Sinophone martial art film, the Reign of Assassins (2010), our inquiry accounts for how the spatial–temporal telos of global queering get materially translated across multiple regional hubs of sexual differences. Queer regionalism in Singapore, China, and the Sinophone worlds encompasses relational dynamics, power differentials, and subnational and supranational linkages. This question –complicated by several concepts – arose many times at occasions of the Queer Asia 2017. Left with series of unanswerable questions, such as the presumption of nation/state, the discontent of sexual/national modernity, and the making of counterpublics, Queer Asia posts challenges for both queer theory and postcolonialism. The Conference participants have reified and (hopefully) resisted the White settler’s dilemma of desiring modernity without the West that has haunted most parts of the world in all aspects, needless to say the production and operationalisation of gender equality, sexual rights and all sorts of queer knowledge. This article, ruminating upon certain observations, reflects the ambivalences and intensions between people of diverse perceptions of modernisation and normalisation for or against queer existence. We foreground that a decolonial queer Marxist critique has to be grounded and contextualized. To countenance this argument, we critique two publications on queer Marxism; Warped and The Politics of Everybody. We argue that some streams of queer Marxism do not consider the coloniality of power; thus continue to disregard violence deployed on the bodies living in the South through the global cheapening and exploitation of the peripheral population. Further, it seems to set the tone for what is a ‘proper’ queer Marxist critique so the rest of the world can follow. Our relative work in China, Iran and India bring lived experiences of activists and demonstrate that queer liberation in these localities inevitably addresses issues of state-form (nation-state), capitalism, post-coloniality and post-sociality. Queer Marxism that only centres white urban workers in the North does not liberate but further disadvantage queers in the South. Anti-capitalist sexuality in the ‘peripheral’ innovates and decolonizes resistance to navigate multiple layers of power. Two of the books discussed make an explicit effort to deterritorialize queer historiography outside the global North. They focus on the everyday experiences of postcolonial subjects in Cape Town and Hong Kong. In a moment of intensified counterterrorism, necropolitical nationalism, and resurgent yet covert forms of empire, both works have much to say about how the lives of sexual minorities are simultaneously affected by and resist Western imperialism. Thus they also enter into an already ongoing debate in contemporary queer studies that challenges the normalization of queer politics as a product of expanding capital both locally and abroad. All three books trace the shifting forms of the nation-state and how it affects the lived experiences of queer populations in the city. In the process, they collectively refuse the seemingly axiomatic notion that queer subjects are always being homogenized by transnational capital and neoliberal cosmopolitanism. Still, it is important to keep in mind that a globalized world characterized by transnational trends is not homogeneous, not even within the so called Western cultural sphere. Local contexts are various and they are significant regarding both the organisation of research activity and the analysis that are made. They indicate, respectively yet simultaneously, the temporal-spatiality, epistemology and assemblage of two intelligible Bodies of queer and Asian studies. This essay first reflects the aforementioned meanings in situ, identifying three primary elements of Queer Asia; that is, how to make queer studies more Asian, how to make Asian studies more queer, and how to transform ‘Asia’ with queer critiques. Considering many doubts regarding the political utility of ‘queerness’ cast by activists I interviewed before, particular attention is given to the last element. This essay then inquire into the intellectual curiosity about ‘what makes queer theory practical in Asia’ and ‘what makes Asia critical of queer theory’. Everything is and should be political, but, following Deleuze and Guattari’s (1987:213) contention, ‘every politics is simultaneously a macropolitics and a micropolitics’. I thus argue that, for Queer Asia, there is no queer-friendly or -hostile Asia; there are Asias in terms of macropolitics. Queer Asia is not just a prima facie Body, constructed and functioned by the existence of sexual and gender diversity. It also serves, deriving from the variable positions of Asian societies concerning international sexuality norm polarisation, to challenge the concept of ‘Asia’ as a stable regional geopolitical reference. Meanwhile, ‘Queer Asia’, as a body without organs, is permeated by flows in all directions in its micropolitics.
