Award for Library Service was created by Ken and Elsie Butler in 1999. Ken was active in building library collections as the Assistant Library Director and was an advocate for library funding. He embraced new technology and helped shape the Library as the extension center evolved into a University campus in downtown. Ken was very proud of his faculty status as a full professor at Portland State Library, and the award was created to recognize the excellence in library faculty service at PSU. His wife, Elsie “Rusty” Butler was a librarian in the Multnomah County library system and lived a life of dedicated service to her county and patrons. Both Ken and Rusty exemplified the excellence in librarianship we strive for everyday at the Portland State University Library as we support this great urban university.

Ken & Elsie Butler

The Butler Award was created through a Charitable Gift Annuity and continues through the Butler Endowment at the Portland State Foundation. The award is celebrated annually at commencement and winners are only considered if nominated by a member of the PSU community. There is a selection committee comprised of the Chair of the Faculty Senate Library Committee, a student ambassador, a local alumna and the Butler’s daughters, Gillian, Margaret and Catherine.

Ken and Elsie’s daughters continue to support the legacy left by their parents through donations to the Butler Endowed Fund. We are grateful for their support and for the legacy left by their parents here at the PSU Library.

Award Winners

2021: Assistant Professor Richard M. He joined PSU in 2018 and is a liaison to the College of Urban and Public Affairs, which allows him to work closely with students and faculty in the departments of Economics, International and Global Studies, and Public Administration. He also provides data management services to the university community and is the coordinator of PSU’s Federal Depository, which contains state, federal and international government documents and maps. Mikulski received his M.L.S. (library science) and Ph.D. (history) from the University at Buffalo (SUNY). His areas of scholarship include government information and data, scholarly communication and culture, and the history of education. His current research examines the development of scholarly communities and academic cultures, which in turn shape scholarship values, research practices and the transmission of information. Mikulski is currently on the editorial boards of the Journal of New Librarianship and DttP: Documents to the People, and is the editor of H-Education. He is also a member of the Depository Library Council, which is the advisory committee to the Government Publishing Office.

2020: Assistant Professor Elizabeth Pickard

Elizabeth Pickard is the Science and Social Sciences Librarian at Portland State University Library. Professor Pickard has been on the faculty since 2015 and has served as liaison to numerous departments, including Anthropology, Biology, Environmental Sciences and Management, Geography, Geology, Sustainability, and Systems Science. Professor Pickard holds a Master of Science in Information from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from the University of Chicago. Her work explores the intersection of student research practices with curriculum, pedagogy, and services, and how these intersections shape what students learn. Her current research uses ethnographic methods to compare the effectiveness of different modes of information literacy instruction in asynchronous online-only courses. Professor Pickard received a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for her work with five Illinois universities on the Ethnographic Research in Illinois Academic Libraries project as well as a Portland State University Faculty Development Grant for her research on geography majors’ research practices.

“As Portland State and other colleges and universities shift more classes to the online-only environment, librarians have faced the challenge of providing students in an online, asynchronous class with information literacy instruction equivalent to an in-person library instruction session.” says Associate Professor Joan Petit, Humanities and Social Sciences Librarian. “Professor Pickard experimented with different modes of delivering information literacy instruction … but went further, conducting a research study … to determine if different modes of instruction led to different outcomes. Few librarians take on such ambitious, longitudinal research projects, and to do so is an enormous service to librarians, faculty, and students. This research project is in addition to the excellence Professor Pickard brings to her everyday work, assisting students and faculty with research questions, teaching library instruction sessions, selecting materials for the library, and contributing to committees and working groups in the library and well beyond.”

2019: Associate Professor Sarah Beasley

Sarah Beasley is the Humanities Librarian and Research and Instruction Services Manager at Portland State University Library. Professor Beasley has been on the faculty since 1997, and has served in numerous capacities at the Library including as the liaison librarian to the Graduate School of Education, the English Department, and several other disciplines over the duration of her career. For many years, she was the Information Resources Management Coordinator, and subsequently the Scholarly Communication Coordinator. Professor Beasley holds a Master of Information and Library Science degree from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from Oregon State University. A generalist by training and inclination, her work has focused on the intersection of library users’ research needs and the means (physical, virtual, and intellectual) to ensure that the Library’s resources meet them.

“Professor Beasley took on leadership roles in major library functional areas such as instruction, collection development, and scholarly communication” noted her nomination committee. “In each of these roles she developed and shared expertise making significant impact not only on library services, but on the faculty’s ability to integrate and teach the use of scholarly materials.” “Her…focus has been to integrate library research into the curriculum, providing students with the skills and rubrics to discover, select and assess scholarly materials” says PSU Associate Professor of English, Maude Hines. “Professor Beasley’s publication and presentation record reflects active scholarship and a continuing focus on professional development” says PSU Director of Institutional Research & Planning, Kathi Ketcheson. “She has kept abreast or ahead of new developments in librarianship, sharing her work broadly within the university and to external groups. Her devotion to meeting the needs of students and faculty is evident through her involvement in teaching and mentoring activities.”

2018: Professor Robert Schroeder

Portland State University Library is pleased to announce the winner of the 2016 Kenneth W. and Elsie W. Butler Award for Library Faculty Service, Associate Professor and Education Librarian Bob Schroeder.

Robert Schroeder joined the PSU Library faculty in 2004. Professor Schroeder has served most recently as Education Librarian. As his colleagues noted, Professor Schroeder is a tireless advocate who learns from students, and views his reference and instruction work as a transformative dialogue between student and librarian. Rosalyn Taylor, Coordinator of Instruction/Adviser for the TRiO program, explains that Professor Schroeder excels in “…creating a welcoming atmosphere and sense of belonging to new students. He demystifies the library for students, encouraging them to inhabit it in the may ways they are while reminding them of his role in their experience at PSU.”

With Kimberly Pendell, Social Work and Social Sciences Librarian, he developed the Culturally Responsive & Inclusive Curriculum Guide, intended to support PSU Faculty in learning and exploring how to create curriculum and engage in pedagogical practices that honor the rich breadth and diversity of experiences and backgrounds of Portland State students. In 2014 his book Critical Journeys: How Fourteen Librarians Came to Embrace Critical Practice was published, and he published a series of two articles, “Exploring Critical and Indigenous Research Methods with a Research Community: Part I – The Leap, and Part II –the Landing.” Professor Schroeder serves as a co-editor-in-chief of the journal Communications in Information Literacy (CIL) and spearheaded the journal’s move from its former online home to reside as a journal published in partnership by the Portland State University Library, making CIL the fifth journal in the Library’s portfolio of journals.

2017: Professor Mary Ellen Kenreich

Portland State University Library is delighted to announce the winner of the 2017 Kenneth W. and Elsie W. Butler Award for Library Faculty Service, Mary Ellen Kenreich. Professor Kenreich is the first person to receive this award twice. She has been described by her nominations committee as “highly respected and sought after for professional advice and conduct…unrivaled in her professionalism and work ethic-the epitome of a service provider.” Professor Kenreich is highly respected and valued for being a leader among Library faculty. Her leadership in the Library has included administrative duties, faculty governance, promotion and tenure review, and committee service. Since her last Butler Award in 2006, Mary Ellen Kenreich has continued to “be a model of academic librarianship, as seen in the level of competency she demonstrates in the core elements of professional academic librarianship: adeptness in a key area of library expertise, service to end users and research and service to the profession” as Susan Hinken from the University of Portland says. Professor Kenreich is receiving this award for the second time because she demonstrates continual dedication to the Portland State community.

2016: Professor Emily Ford

Portland State University Library is pleased to announce the winner of the 2016 Kenneth W. and Elsie W. Butler Award for Library Faculty Service, Assistant Professor and Urban and Public Affairs Librarian Emily Ford.

Professor Ford integrates library instruction into both undergraduate and graduate coursework, provides individual guidance and support to students, and works with faculty to bring high quality materials into the Library’s collections. As one of her CUPA colleagues noted, “Emily Ford goes out of her way to make herself available to faculty and students and her expertise and dedication to service are extreme assets to the University.”

Professor Ford’s scholarship is focused both on student learning and on scholarly communication, specifically open peer-review.
