to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our children. However, there is one common parenting practice that experts are warning can actually lead to a painful and concerning injury - picking up children by the arms.</p><p>Known as "nursemaid's elbow", this injury happens when the child's elbow partially dislocates from the joint. It's an unfortunately common injury, with research indicating an annual incidence of 2.7 to 4.3 cases per 1,000 children.</p><div id="ad-vip-article"><div id="div-gpt-ad-vip"></div></div><div id="mantis-recommender-top-placeholder"></div><p>The reason it occurs so frequently is due to the anatomy of a child's elbow joint. At a young age, the ligaments and bones are still developing, making the elbow joint more prone to subluxation, or partial dislocation.</p><p>Picking up a child by grabbing their arms is one of the leading causes of nursemaid's elbow, as the sudden pull on the arm can cause the ligament to slip out of place. Other common culprits include swinging a child by the arms, pulling on their hands, and even tugging on their wrists.</p><p>"Nursemaid's elbow is a very common pediatric injury that I see regularly in my practice," says Dr. Jennifer Lang, a pediatric orthopedist at Stanford Children's Health.
