It is commonly found in the names of various locations throughout the Bible. These locations often hold significant historical and theological importance within the biblical narrative.

Bethlehem:
Bethlehem, meaning "House of Bread," is perhaps the most well-known "Beth" location. It is the birthplace of King David and, most importantly, Jesus Christ. The prophet Micah foretold the significance of Bethlehem in the coming of the Messiah: "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come forth for Me one to be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times" (Micah 5:2). The Gospel of Matthew confirms this prophecy with the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:1).

Bethel:
Bethel, meaning "House of God," is another significant location. It is first mentioned in Genesis when Jacob dreams of a ladder reaching to heaven and names the place Bethel, saying, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was unaware of it" (Genesis 28:16). Bethel later becomes a center of worship and a site of significant events in Israel's history, including the establishment of one of the golden calves by Jeroboam (1 Kings 12:28-29).

Bethsaida:
Bethsaida, meaning "House of Fishing," is a town located near the Sea of Galilee. It is the hometown of several of Jesus' disciples, including Peter, Andrew, and Philip (John 1:44). Jesus performed several miracles in Bethsaida, including the healing of a blind man (Mark 8:22-26) and the feeding of the five thousand (Luke 9:10-17). Despite these miracles, Jesus later denounced the town for its unbelief (Matthew 11:21).

Bethany:
Bethany, meaning "House of Affliction" or "House of Figs," is a village on the Mount of Olives, near Jerusalem. It is the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, whom Jesus raised from the dead (John 11:1-44). Bethany is also the location where Jesus was anointed by Mary (John 12:1-8) and where He ascended into heaven (Luke 24:50-51).

Bethphage:
Bethphage, meaning "House of Unripe Figs," is a village near Bethany on the Mount of Olives. It is mentioned in the context of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Jesus instructs His disciples to find a donkey in Bethphage, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah: "Say to the Daughter of Zion, 'See, your King comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey'" (Matthew 21:5).

Bethsaida Julias:
Bethsaida Julias is a different location from the Bethsaida near the Sea of Galilee. It is located on the eastern side of the Jordan River and was rebuilt by Philip the Tetrarch, who named it Julias in honor of Julia, the daughter of Augustus Caesar. This area is also associated with the feeding of the five thousand and other events in Jesus' ministry.

Beth-horon:
Beth-horon, meaning "House of the Hollow," consists of two towns, Upper and Lower Beth-horon, located on the border of Ephraim and Benjamin. It is known for the battle where Joshua defeated the Amorites, and the LORD hurled large hailstones from the sky (Joshua 10:10-11). The strategic location of Beth-horon made it a significant military site throughout Israel's history.

Beth-shean:
Beth-shean, meaning "House of Quiet," is a city in the Jordan Valley. It is notable for its role in the battle where the Philistines defeated King Saul and his sons, and their bodies were hung on the walls of Beth-shean (1 Samuel 31:10-12). Later, it became a part of Solomon's administrative districts (1 Kings 4:12).

Beth-zur:
Beth-zur, meaning "House of the Rock," is a town in the hill country of Judah. It is mentioned in the context of the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls under Nehemiah (Nehemiah 3:16). The town also played a role in the Maccabean Revolt as a strategic military site.

Conclusion:
The prefix "Beth" in biblical place names signifies the importance of these locations as centers of worship, prophecy, and divine intervention. Each "Beth" location contributes uniquely to the unfolding of God's redemptive plan throughout the biblical narrative.
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Beth
the most general word for a house or habitation.
