And He ate<MG2068> nothing<MG3756, 3762> during<MG1722> those<MG1565> days<MG2250>, and when they had ended<MG4931>, He was hungry<MG3983>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>And the devil<MG1228> said<MG3004> to Him, &#8220;If<MG1487> You are the Son<MG5207> of God<MG2316>, tell<MG3004> this<MG3778> stone<MG3037> to become<MG1096> bread<MG740>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And Jesus<MG2424> answered<MG611> him, &#8220;It is written<MG1125>: &#8216;MAN<MG444> SHALL NOT LIVE<MG2198> ON BREAD<MG740> ALONE<MG3441>.&#8217;&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And he led<MG321> Him up<MG321> and showed<MG1166> Him all<MG3956> the kingdoms<MG932> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>the world<MG3625> in a moment<MG4743> of time<MG5550>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And the devil<MG1228> said<MG3004> to Him, &#8220;I will give<MG1325> You all<MG537a> this<MG3778> domain<MG1849> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>its glory<MG1391>, for it has been handed<MG3860> over<MG3860> to me, and I give<MG1325> it to whomever<MG3739, 1437> I want<MG2309>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767> if<MG1437> You <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>worship<MG4352> before<MG1799> me, it shall all<MG3956> be Yours<MG4674>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Jesus<MG2424> replied<MG611, 3004> to him, &#8220;It is written<MG1125>: &#8216;YOU SHALL WORSHIP<MG4352> THE LORD<MG2962> YOUR GOD<MG2316> AND SERVE<MG3000> HIM ONLY<MG3441>.&#8217;&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And he brought<MG71> Him into Jerusalem<MG2419> and had Him stand<MG2476> on the pinnacle<MG4419> of the temple<MG2413>, and said<MG3004> to Him, &#8220;If<MG1487> You are the Son<MG5207> of God<MG2316>, throw<MG906> Yourself<MG4572> down<MG2736> from<MG1782> here<MG1782>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>for it is written<MG1125>: <p class="indent1stline">&#8216;HE WILL GIVE<MG1781> HIS ANGELS<MG32a> ORDERS<MG1781> CONCERNING<MG4012> YOU, TO PROTECT<MG1314> YOU,&#8217; <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>and, <t><p class="indent1">&#8216;ON <i>THEIR</i> HANDS<MG5495> THEY WILL LIFT<MG142> YOU UP, <t><p class="indent1">SO<MG3379> THAT<MG3379> YOU DO NOT<MG3379> STRIKE<MG4350> YOUR FOOT<MG4228> AGAINST<MG4314> A STONE<MG3037>.&#8217;&#8221; <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And Jesus<MG2424> answered<MG611> and said<MG3004> to him, &#8220;It has been stated<MG3004>, &#8216;YOU SHALL NOT PUT<MG1598> THE LORD<MG2962> YOUR GOD<MG2316> TO<MG1598> THE<MG1598> TEST<MG1598>.&#8217;&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And <i>so</i> when the devil<MG1228> had finished<MG4931> every<MG3956> temptation<MG3986>, he left<MG868> Him until<MG891> an opportune<MG2540> time<MG2540>. <p class="hdg">Jesus&#8217; Public Ministry</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And Jesus<MG2424> returned<MG5290> to Galilee<MG1056> in the power<MG1411> of the Spirit<MG4151>, and news<MG5345> about<MG4012> Him spread<MG1831> through<MG2596> all<MG3650> the surrounding<MG4066> region<MG4066>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And He <i>began</i> teaching<MG1321> in their synagogues<MG4864> and was praised<MG1392> by all<MG3956>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And He came<MG2064> to Nazareth<MG3478>, where<MG3757> He had been<MG1510> brought<MG5142> up<MG5142>; and as was His custom<MG1486>, He entered<MG1525> the synagogue<MG4864> on the Sabbath<MG4521>, and stood<MG450> up<MG450> to read<MG314>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And the scroll<MG975> of Isaiah<MG2268> the prophet<MG4396> was handed<MG1929> to Him. And He unrolled<MG380> the scroll<MG975> and found<MG2147> the place<MG5117> where<MG3757> it was written<MG1125>: <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>&#8220;THE SPIRIT<MG4151> OF THE LORD<MG2962> IS UPON ME, <t><p class="indent1">BECAUSE<MG3739, 1752a> HE ANOINTED<MG5548> ME TO BRING<MG2097> GOOD<MG2097> NEWS<MG2097> TO THE POOR<MG4434>. <t><p class="indent1">HE HAS SENT<MG649> ME TO PROCLAIM<MG2784> RELEASE<MG859> TO CAPTIVES<MG164>, <t><p class="indent1">AND RECOVERY<MG309> OF<MG309> SIGHT<MG309> TO THE BLIND<MG5185>, <t><p class="indent1">TO SET<MG649> FREE<MG1722, 859> THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED<MG2352>, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>TO PROCLAIM<MG2784> THE FAVORABLE<MG1184> YEAR<MG1763> OF THE LORD<MG2962>.&#8221; <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And He rolled<MG4428> up<MG4428> the scroll<MG975>, gave<MG591> it back<MG591> to the attendant<MG5257>, and sat<MG2523> down<MG2523>; and the eyes<MG3788> of all<MG3956> <i>the people</i> in the synagogue<MG4864> were intently<MG816> directed<MG816> at Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> He began<MG757> to say<MG3004> to them, &#8220;Today<MG4594> this<MG3778> Scripture<MG1124> has been fulfilled<MG4137> in your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>hearing<MG3775>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And all<MG3956> <i>the people</i> were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>speaking<MG3140> well<MG3140> of<MG3140> Him, and admiring<MG2296> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>gracious<MG5485> words<MG3056> which were coming<MG1607> from His <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>lips<MG4750>; and <i>yet</i> they were saying<MG3004>, &#8220;Is this<MG3778> not Joseph&#8217;s<MG2501> son<MG5207>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And He said<MG3004> to them, &#8220;No<MG3843> doubt<MG3843> you will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>quote<MG3004> this<MG3778> proverb<MG3850b> to Me: &#8216;Physician<MG2395>, heal<MG2323> yourself<MG4572>! All<MG3745> <i>the miracles that</i> we heard<MG191> were done<MG1096> in Capernaum<MG2746b>, do<MG4160> here<MG5602> in your hometown<MG3968> as<MG2532> well<MG2532>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>But He said<MG3004>, &#8220;Truly<MG281> I say<MG3004> to you, no<MG3762> prophet<MG4396> is welcome<MG1184> in his hometown<MG3968>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>But I say<MG3004> to you in truth<MG225>, there were many<MG4183> widows<MG5503> in Israel<MG2474> in the days<MG2250> of Elijah<MG2243>, when<MG3753> the sky<MG3772> was shut<MG2808> up<MG2808> for three<MG5140> years<MG2094> and six<MG1803> months<MG3376>, when<MG5613> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>severe<MG3173> famine<MG3042> came<MG1096> over<MG1909> all<MG3956> the land<MG1093>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>and <i>yet</i> Elijah<MG2243> was sent<MG3992> to none<MG3762> of them, but <i>only</i> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Zarephath<MG4558>, <i>in the land</i> of Sidon<MG4606>, to a woman<MG1135> who was a widow<MG5503>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And there were many<MG4183> with<MG3015> leprosy<MG3015> in Israel<MG2474> in the time<MG1909> of Elisha<MG1666> the prophet<MG4396>; and none<MG3762> of them was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>cleansed<MG2511>, but <i>only</i> Naaman<MG3483b> the Syrian<MG4948>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And all<MG3956> <i>the people</i> in the synagogue<MG4864> were filled<MG4092a> with rage<MG2372> as they heard<MG191> these<MG3778> things<MG3778>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>and they got<MG450> up<MG450> and drove<MG1544b> Him out<MG1544b> of the city<MG4172>, and brought<MG71> Him to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>crest<MG3790> of the hill<MG3735> on which<MG3739> their city<MG4172> had been built<MG3618>, so<MG5620> that<MG5620> they could<MG5620> throw<MG2630> Him down<MG2630> from<MG2630> the cliff<MG2630>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>But He passed<MG1330> through<MG1223> their midst<MG3319> and went<MG4198> on<MG4198> His way<MG4198>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And He came<MG2718> down<MG2718> to Capernaum<MG2746b>, a city<MG4172> of Galilee<MG1056>; and He was teaching<MG1321> them on the Sabbath<MG4521>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>and they were amazed<MG1605> at His teaching<MG1322>, because<MG3754> His <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>message<MG3056> was <i>delivered</i> with authority<MG1849>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>In the synagogue<MG4864> there was a man<MG444> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>possessed<MG2192> by the spirit<MG4151> of an unclean<MG169> demon<MG1140>, and he cried<MG349> out<MG349> with a loud<MG3173> voice<MG5456>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>&#8220;Leave<MG1436> us alone<MG1436>! <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>What<MG5101> business do You have with us, Jesus<MG2424> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>of Nazareth<MG3479>? Have You come<MG2064> to destroy<MG622> us? I know<MG3609a> who<MG5101> You are&#8212;the Holy<MG40> One<MG40> of God<MG2316>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>But Jesus<MG2424> rebuked<MG2008> him, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;Be quiet<MG5392> and come<MG1831> out<MG1831> of him!&#8221; And when the demon<MG1140> had thrown<MG4496> him down<MG4496> in the midst<MG3319> <i>of the people,</i> it came<MG1831> out<MG1831> of him without<MG3367> doing<MG984> him any<MG3367> harm<MG984>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And amazement<MG2285> came<MG1096> upon them all<MG3956>, and they <i>began</i> talking<MG4814> with one<MG240> another<MG240>, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;What<MG5101> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>this<MG3778> message<MG3056>? For with authority<MG1849> and power<MG1411> He commands<MG2004> the unclean<MG169> spirits<MG4151>, and they come<MG1831> out<MG1831>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And the news<MG2279> about<MG4012> Him was spreading<MG1607> into every<MG3956> locality<MG5117> of the surrounding<MG4066> region<MG4066>. <p class="hdg">Many Are Healed</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Then<MG2532> He got<MG450> up<MG450> and <i>left</i> the synagogue<MG4864>, and entered<MG1525> Simon&#8217;s<MG4613> home<MG3614>.
