However, the Bible does reference various nations, lands, and peoples that can be considered as countries in the ancient sense. These references provide insight into the historical and theological significance of these regions within the biblical narrative. Ancient Near Eastern Countries 1. Egypt: Egypt is one of the most frequently mentioned countries in the Bible. It served as a place of refuge and bondage for the Israelites. The account of Joseph, who rose to power in Egypt, and the subsequent enslavement of the Israelites, is pivotal (Genesis 37-50, <a href="/bsb/exodus/1.htm">Exodus 1</a>). The Exodus narrative, where God delivers the Israelites from Egyptian bondage, is central to the Old Testament.
