news after his BlackBerry use during a 10-day cruise cost him almost $600. It's one of many surprises that can await at the end of a vacation on the high seas.</p><p>For Laurie Markham, it was the booze tab for what she'd thought had been a fairly conservative glass of wine with dinner and the occasional cocktail for her husband and herself.</p><p>For Dianne Tan, it was the gratuities and soda pop cards for her two teenagers. And for Carole Round, it was the high-priced haircuts and pedicures in the onboard salon.</p><p>"What I think is the single biggest problem where cruise costs are concerned is that people talk about it as an all-inclusive vacation," says Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor of CruiseCritic.com. She worked as a children's programmer on cruise ships for several years and says she saw how it all added up: "Buying drinks on your room card and not keeping track, spending more than planned gambling in the casino, or eating in the special dining room that wasn't part of the package."</p><p>While there are lots of traps for spending beyond your budget, Spencer Brown says cruises do offer basic accommodation, meals and activities, and that's good value for money. "No one is forced to spend beyond the basics with the exception of gratuities, which should be known beforehand," she says.</p><p><strong>Smart savings</strong><br/>So what are the pros' tips for minimizing your bill after the party's over? Here are a few:</p><p>Communications. On-ship telephone use costs between $7 and $12 a minute. Smart phone roaming charges are no bargain either at over $50 per megabyte for international use. Use internet cafes when onshore and save onboard telephone or internet use for emergencies. After all, isn't getting unplugged part of the vacation experience?</p><p>Onshore excursions. Cruise lines offer pre-booking for excursions when the ship pulls into exotic ports. If you do your research, you'll find lower cost alternatives such as booking with local tour operators -- make sure you do your homework on these first -- or even free self-guided tours using planners, maps and brochures.</p><p>Online resources such as CruiseCritic.com offer reviews of port tours. with Princess cruise lines. It was like one long sales pitch for the entire cruise. Jewellry, art, trinkets, extra charges for almost everything onboard, attending info sessions on different ports of call that are just sales pitches for onshore shops that the cruise companies and directors obviously have kick back agreements with. About the only thing that seemed to be included on the 'all-inclusive cruise' was basic food and a nightly show. We bought an expensive ($500) spa package for the 'length of the cruise'  only to discover that it was only for a 'segment' of our cruise and was invalid for the last week of the cruise. Have taken two cruises and would never have taken the second except that my wife wanted to. Everything is an additional cost plus they add as much as a 15% gratuity onto the prices. But the thing I dislike most about cruises is the pressure to leave a gratuity to everyone and their uncle at the end of the cruise. All fabulous. Sure they cost-but does no one think about this before they sign up? $600 blackberry bill? Did they think it would be free? Haircut on board? Would you not do this prior to taking your cruise? Pop for the teens-most cruise lines charge $6. a day for unlimited pop. The way my kids drink the stuff that's a bargain. I agree-cruising is not the most inexpensive vacation, but I do not think they are promoted that way. If your goal is to spend the least amount of money I would suggest an all-inclusive to Cuba or DR. Get it cut before if need be, I don't think it will grow that fast in a couple of weeks. As for spending all your time sitting in front of a slot machine, if that what you like you be better off going to Vegas. There are to many other things to see and do on the boat. I do agree with one thing though. There should not be a blanket  gratuity at the end of the trip. $20 a day maximum.  Plus, we have never eaten in the specialty restaurants.  The regular dining is just fine with us.</p> <p> </p> <p>As for tipping, you do not have to tip everybody on board.  You should tip the people that take care of you though.  Your room steward and waiter for sure.  These people are from 3rd world countries and they rely on tips as their wages.  I realize that some cruise lines automatically charge your room for tips, but if you are not happy with that -
