This update brings the flexibility to switch seamlessly between Markdown and reStructuredText (RST) as needed. We’re taking a moment to highlight what’s already been accomplished and what this means for the TYPO3 Community moving forward.

The Problem

TYPO3 documentation currently relies on reStructuredText (RST), which, though powerful, has a learning curve that can discourage contributions. Many developers are more comfortable with Markdown, a simpler and widely used format in the PHP community. Since writing documentation isn’t usually a developer’s favorite task, being able to work in familiar Markdown should make it a lot easier. This initiative aims to fully support CommonMark Markdown in TYPO3, letting developers use the format they already know and prefer.

What is CommonMark?

CommonMark is a standardized version of Markdown, designed to create consistency across Markdown implementations. Unlike traditional Markdown, which can vary in features across tools, CommonMark follows strict guidelines to ensure predictable, universal rendering. By adopting CommonMark, TYPO3 aims to bring Markdown documentation into its ecosystem without sacrificing consistency or rendering quality.

Key Achievements So Far

Our work to implement full support for CommonMark in the TYPO3 render-guides project has reached several important milestones, each addressing core needs of extension developers who prefer Markdown.

Enhanced Markdown Parser in phpdocumentor/guides
We started by improving the upstream Markdown parser in the phpdocumentor/guides project, ensuring that it now supports the complete CommonMark feature set. This improvement forms the backbone of our Markdown implementation, making it possible for TYPO3 documentation to align with widely used standards and offer a familiar experience for Markdown users.

Refined Inline Structure for Rich Text Options
To provide authors with the flexibility they need, we changed the internal structure of inline nodes to allow strong and italic text, including combinations like italic bold. This enhancement ensures that rich formatting options are available in Markdown, bringing it closer to the typographic flexibility users enjoy in RST.

Example Documentation in Markdown
To showcase our progress and help users familiarize themselves with the new functionality, we’ve created a sample Markdown document. This example demonstrates Markdown’s capabilities in TYPO3 and highlights features that users can explore and implement in their own projects.

Automatic Menu Generation
While Markdown doesn’t natively support menu creation, we’ve addressed this by adding a feature that automatically generates a menu based on file structure and document headings. This enhancement makes it easier for authors to organize and navigate their Markdown-based documentation, bringing a level of structure traditionally associated with RST to Markdown.

Inline Link Detection
We have integrated support for inline link detection, allowing links to be recognized and rendered without additional configuration. This improvement saves authors time and provides a seamless, user-friendly linking experience within their Markdown documentation.

Support for GitHub-Style Admonitions
GitHub-style admonitions are now supported, offering a way to highlight important information like notes, warnings, and tips. This addition aligns Markdown documentation with industry standards and lets authors create visually distinct blocks to emphasize crucial points.

Front Matter Tags for Metadata
We’ve also added support for front matter tags, enabling authors to include metadata such as the document’s author, creation date, and other details. This feature is essential for keeping documentation organized and accessible, enhancing both author and reader experience.

Preliminary Markdown-to-RST Conversion Tool
For authors who start their documentation journey in Markdown but wish to transition to RST, we’ve developed a first working version of a Markdown-to-RST conversion tool. This tool is a key part of our long-term vision to allow TYPO3 users to choose the format that best meets their needs, without the worry of being locked into one format.

Draft Rendering of Powermail Documentation
As part of testing our current setup, we rendered the Powermail documentation, which yielded promising results. Powermail documentation is now live with the new Markdown support. This example demonstrates how our Markdown implementation handles complex documentation structures, providing a real-world view of its capabilities.

Extended Features Through render-guides
With Markdown rendering integrated into the render-guides project, it benefits from the same core features available in the TYPO3 template for RST. This includes interaction on headers, consistent rendering of code blocks, and integration with other tools, such as the watch functionality created by Garvin Hicking.

Interlinking Between RST and Markdown Documentation
Another standout feature we’re proud of is interlinking between RST and Markdown documentation. It gives authors a new level of flexibility, linking Markdown and RST content directly, which makes navigating complex documentation easier.

What’s Next?

As we move toward our project’s end goal, our focus remains on refining and finalizing each of these features to ensure a smooth, high-quality experience for TYPO3 users. By the end of December 2024, we aim to achieve full CommonMark support and provide TYPO3 extension developers with the flexibility to choose the documentation format that best suits their workflows.

The Impact

This initiative not only makes TYPO3 more accessible for developers accustomed to Markdown, but it also expands the documentation options within TYPO3 itself. Extension authors can start with Markdown for simplicity and later switch to RST if they require advanced formatting features. The added flexibility also lowers barriers for new contributors, allowing them to work in a familiar syntax, which aligns directly with TYPO3’s commitment to inclusivity, flexibility, and user-centric development.

How to Successfully Take Over a TYPO3 Project

Are you taking over an existing TYPO3 project as a service provider from another agency? The aim is to help them get through the initial stages of working with TYPO3 quickly and confidently after installation.

To achieve this, the project will focus on making it easier to navigate existing documentation. Two primary areas of focus are:

Setting up a site, including site packages, site settings, and data structures

Working with extensions (both third-party and custom-built)

Current Progress

Lina Wolf and her colleague Maike Kiebele are making very good progress. Their plan to restructure the relevant documentation area is in place, and they are well underway with its implementation.

As a first result, the links to the version documentation in the newly introduced menu have been optimized. The latest stable version is now highlighted, while additional buttons provide access to the older LTS version and the upcoming release.

They are currently working intensively on revising the Getting Started Tutorial to make the first steps in using TYPO3 easier. New content is being created, such as instructions for setting up a root page, and explanations of the TCA. Existing content is also being reorganized or moved, such as System Requirements and Deployment in the Installation section below Getting Started; and Permission Management and Legacy Installation sections in the Administration in TYPO3 Explained section.

With the help of Sandra Erbel from the TYPO3 Documentation Team, the colleagues are also working on a glossary to better explain relevant terms in the TYPO3 cosmos.

Testing the New Structure

A test phase for the restructured documentation is scheduled for the end of November, and the project needs volunteer testers. Anyone who would like to participate in the tests is welcome to contact us in the Slack channel #typo3-documentation. Thank you very much in advance!

Benefits of the Documentation Updates

While the focus is on new TYPO3 integrators and developers, improved documentation benefits everyone. TYPO3 is powerful, but has a steep learning curve. By lowering the entry barriers, newcomers can experience early success, which brings several key benefits to the TYPO3 community:

More newcomers will successfully complete their first TYPO3 projects.

The community will grow as more users become involved.

TYPO3's reputation will strengthen, attracting even more interest and contributors.

Get Involved

The Documentation Team is always looking for more support, especially for future initiatives. The team provides comprehensive, high-quality documentation for TYPO3 with help from the community. We encourage you to get involved! Submit your idea before 21 November 2024. Decisions will be announced at the end of December.

Submit Your Idea!

About the TYPO3 Idea Budget in 2025

The TYPO3 Association has changed the idea budget from a single annual budget to four quarterly budgets. The goal is to have a faster process in proposing, voting over, and finishing the ideas.

With a quarterly budget we are able to adjust to changing demands faster and give community members an opportunity to submit ideas four times a year, rather than once. The idea budget comes on top of the team budgets and the other budgets of the TYPO3 Association. Teams can still apply for a yearly budget for 2025. Find out more about the Funding and Finances of the TYPO3 Association.

We want to make it easier to apply for the budget and we also want to remove any hourly rate from the budget calculation. We have defined fixed amounts for which you can apply:

€1,500

€3,000

€5,000

€7,500

€10,000

If a budget idea is granted, the recipient must finish the project within the first quarter of 2025. The Business Control Committee (BCC) will review the outcome of the idea and if the goal of the idea is reached, the budget will be paid out to the recipient.

The BCC will assign one mentor to each budget recipient to help on topics like budgeting, project planning, communication, and connections inside the TYPO3 Community. Our goal is to support you to finish your idea with the best possible outcome for the TYPO3 Community.

After submitting your idea, we will encourage the community and all applicants to discuss the idea at talk.typo3.org. You can review the idea with the community and get support for it in order to fine tune the idea before the submission.

Basic Rules for Ideas

The results of the idea must be publicly available.

The results of the idea should foster and benefit the TYPO3 community and/or TYPO3 project.

The idea should not directly generate funds for the applicant nor enable the applicant to generate earnings from it.

Per applicant, only one budget per quarter will be granted.

The idea and deliverables can not be changed once the member voting has started.

The BCC will review the applications. If the idea requires collaboration with a team or another community member, we will get in contact with all parties and discuss how it can be achieved in the best possible way. The same applies to similar ideas.

Before submitting your idea, we encourage all applicants to discuss the idea in the Community Budget Ideas 2025 Q1 category at talk.typo3.org. You can review the idea with the community and get support for it in order to fine tune the idea before the submission.

The Process for the First Quarter of 2025

We kick off the process for the idea submissions for 2025 with the call for community budget ideas. We ask the community to submit their ideas they wish to work on within the next 21 days. The BCC will check and publish the ideas. The TYPO3 members can vote for the ideas. The top four ideas will be granted for implementation within the first quarter of 2025.

We have a total of €40,000 available for the ideas. You can apply for funding in each quarter. Individuals and teams can also apply.

Tip: If you have a big project and you’re not sure if you can finish it within one quarter — split the project into multiple idea applications.

Timeline

1 November 2024 — Announcement — Call for budget ideas Q1 2025

21 November 2024 — Deadline for submission of budget ideas

3 December 2024 — Ideas will be published and voting process starts

17 December 2024 — Voting process ends

20 December 2024 — Budgets granted

1 January 2025 — Work on idea projects start

31 March 2025 — Work on idea projects end

Submit Your Budget Idea

Use the Idea Submission — T3A Budget 2025 — Q1 form to submit your idea. This proved challenging because Nikita Popov's PHP Parser couldn't generate the new code as required. With help from Rector core developers and Nikita Popov himself, we managed to make it work with some custom modifications.

All Rector rules previously lost during migration to version 2 have been integrated into Fractor and are now fully operational.

Find the completed milestones here: Funding for Rector & Fractor Q3 Milestone.

Improving Fractor

This quarter, I also enhanced Fractor’s CLI output to display file paths with line numbers and track how many files were migrated. Additionally, Martin Helmich’s TypoScript Parser integration now prints TypoScript files according to custom configurations, such as tabs instead of spaces.

Beyond code improvements, I’ve revamped the documentation, making it easier to understand how to use Fractor in TYPO3 projects and configure its options.

A new rule generator was also developed, streamlining the process of creating new rules and providing unit test cases automatically.

See all closed Fractor issues here: TYPO3 Funding Q3 2024 Milestone.

TYPO3 at beyond tellerrand Berlin 2024

TYPO3 will be attending beyond tellerrand in Berlin on 7-8 November 2024. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, it's critical to keep TYPO3 innovative and relevant — and we can't do that without the energy and creativity of young professionals who will take TYPO3 forward.

This highlights the significance of events like the TYPO3 Surfcamp, which foster collaboration and inspire the next generation of professionals.

Following the success of last year, we are excited to announce the Surfcamp will also take place in 2025: 3–10 May. Once again, 30 spots are available for young professionals, 30 years and younger, from diverse international backgrounds, including PHP developers, frontend developers, designers, UX experts, marketers and project managers.

Building the Future of TYPO3

Traditional meetups are valuable, but they don’t always resonate with young professionals looking for something more engaging and collaborative. It’s not just about coding, it’s about building the relationships and networks that will drive TYPO3 forward. What previously took several minutes to render in Sphinx now completes in under a minute.

Streamlined linking: With automatic link generation for each headline, navigating and referencing sections has never been easier.

Simplified migration: We’ve made the process of moving from the Sphinx system straightforward with our Docker-based migration tools, allowing contributors to switch without hassle.

Given the clear benefits and the overwhelmingly positive feedback, it makes sense to standardize on the PHP-based rendering engine for all documentation going forward.

What’s the Plan?

We’re planning to migrate all extension manuals to the new system. However, only newly rendered versions of manuals (i.e., new releases or changes to the master/main branch) will be affected by this transition to the PHP-based system. Documentation versions that were already rendered with Sphinx will remain accessible as they are and will not be re-rendered unless updated.

For extension authors, this means that the documentation for their extensions will soon be rendered exclusively using the PHP-based engine. As part of this process:

The old Sphinx-based system will be completely phased out.

We recommend that extension maintainers migrate their documentation themselves and test the new PHP-based rendering locally. This ensures the smoothest transition and allows maintainers to address any potential issues early.

A CI pipeline will automatically switch your extension’s documentation to the new renderer. Our team will be available to support and help with any issues or questions that might arise during the transition.

Timeline for the Transition

We are aiming to complete the full transition to the PHP-based rendering system by the end of 2024. A key milestone in this process will be the TYPO3 Community Sprint in Q4/2024, which takes place 18–22 November 2024. During this event, our team will be available to address any final questions. This will also be an ideal opportunity to ensure that all extension manuals are successfully transitioned, and to provide hands-on support if needed.

The phase-out of the Sphinx-based system will happen gradually leading up to this event.

Action Required for Extension Developers

To make this transition as smooth as possible, we highly recommend that all extension authors:

Migrate their manuals to the new system and update their documentation projects to use the new PHP-based rendering system as soon as possible.

Test the new rendering locally to ensure everything works as expected.

Follow the Render Migration Tutorial to migrate your documentation projects to the new PHP-based rendering system.

For any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the TYPO3 Documentation Team. We’re here to help make this transition as smooth as possible.

TYPO3 Conference 2024: What to Expect

Join T3CON24 in Düsseldorf, 26–28 Nov 2024, for expert talks, networking, and insights into TYPO3’s role in digital transformation.
