Mercator Ocean International issued a call for tender to support projects over a two-year period to foster developments to ensure the evolution of the Copernicus Marine Service. 14 projects were selected and initiated by European public and private research organisations in June 2022, and have now been completed.</p><p>The projects covered four overarching themes:</p><ul><li>Next-generation Ocean Forecasting System</li><li>Marine Coastal Environment</li><li>Ocean Climate</li><li>Artificial Intelligence</li></ul><p>The R&D performed in these projects will impact Copernicus Marine Service systems and products in the following years through:</p><ul><li>The addition of new/improved products in Copernicus Marine catalogue:<ul><li>Long consistent time series of global Phytoplankton Functional Types products together with per-pixel uncertainty.</li><li>Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) and Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) products at the surface for both coastal and global ocean.</li><li>High-resolution/multi-resolution coastal Ocean Colour products (incl. chlorophyll-a concentration, turbidity, and suspended particulate matter concentration) taking advantage of the synergy between Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 satellites.</li><li>Sargassum algae detection products derived from multiple satellite observations: wide swath sensors (MODIS-Aqua, OLCI Sentinel-3), high spatial resolution sensors (MSI Sentinel-2, OLI Landsat-8) and high temporal resolution with geostationary satellite (ABI GOES-16).</li><li>Next generation of sea level products, incl. the processing of the wide swath SWOT satellite data, their use in sea level gridded products using artificial intelligence methods and collaborative intercomparison data challenges.</li><li>Ocean surface currents calculated from Automatic Identification System (AIS) vessel tracking data.</li><li>New pan-Arctic Sea Ice Concentration (SIC) product at 5-km resolution using data from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) and a pan-sharpening algorithm.</li></ul></li><li>The upgrade/preparation of the next generation of operational systems:<ul><li>Advanced ensemble-based data assimilation methods, incl. perturbation generation methods and dedicated stochastic validation metrics to evaluate the simulations.</li><li>Advanced high-resolution, regional, multi-grid data assimilation methods, incl. the implementation of nested dynamical model configuration, the formulation of the multi-grid control vector, and dedicated validation metrics to assess the forecasting skill of the system.</li><li>Calibration methods for sea-ice forecasts using deep learning models and various predictors trained on the new pan-Arctic SIC product mentioned above.</li><li>Better constraint of water mass balance and freshwater fluxes in ocean reanalyses using satellite geodetic measurements.</li><li>Improved coastal zone monitoring:<ul><li>Use of an Estuarine Box Model (physics-based and machine-learning based) to better constrain the river-ocean interface.</li><li>Use of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) and HFR (High Frequency Radar) coastal observations together with artificial intelligence based methods to improve the coastal forcing fields (wind & current) of a regional wave modelling system.</li><li>Development of nature-based solutions together with risk assessment
