The absence of a cure or vaccine for HIV/AIDS and the urgent need to reach people on the impact of this disease has resulted in the emphasis of mass education of populations, which incorporates the use of mass media. Education about HIV/AIDS has gone beyond awareness building to attitude and behaviour change. This paper focuses on how HIV/AIDS awareness and education is carried out by the music industry in Kenya's broadcast media. The paper introduces the rationale of HIV/AIDS prevalence among the Kenyan youth. It examines the place of Kenya's music in behaviour change communication by digging into the language and graphics that are encompassed in this music. The paper notes that despite the fact that the media has made efforts to create awareness and advocate for behaviour change, the same media is perpetuating sexual graphics that seem to promote sexual behaviour among the youth. The Kenya Demographic Health Survey of 2008/09 reveals that, Nyanza Province has the overall highest infection prevalence in Kenya with a prevalence of 8% among youth in the age bracket of 15-24 years compared to the overall national prevalence of 6.3%. The purpose of this study is to find out the influence of the mass media in shaping HIV and AIDS risk perceptions among the youth and understand how these perceptions inform their behavior with respect to sexual choices. This study will be carried out in schools in Kisumu East District which has a student population of 14,140 youth in the age bracket of 15-19 years attending those Schools. A sample size of 375 students will be selected. To define and describe data and characteristics about the population being studied, both quantitative and qualitative data will be collected using a structured questionnaire. They use different techniques to influence human knowledge, attitude and practice. Through the qualitative approach, the study identified the media and strategies commonly used for HIV/AIDS behaviour change communication in Nigeria. It triangulated unobtrusive observation and in-depth interviews through the viewing of selected broadcast, film and outdoor media in SouthWest Nigeria. In-depth interviews complemented the data. Results revealed the use of social marketing to enhance acceptance, retention and recall of HIV messages. Repetition, context-specific languages, credible sources and integration of advertisement, drama, news and public service announcements increased information availability, affordability, accessibility and comprehension. Different countries have used so many communication strategies to reduce cases of HIV/AIDS by creating awareness and educating the masses on the implications of having it and what to do when one contracts the disease. Mass media are regarded as powerful intervening factors in educating the masses on health issues. This study therefore examined the use of a television series Shuga to educate university undergraduates. It explored the Media dependency theory and Social Learning theory and explained that the media can be used for sustainable development. The study employed a quantitative approach using questionnaire items to explore the questions raised. The study showed that media can be useful tools in exposing undergraduates to HIV/AIDS, in increasing knowledge of HIV/AIDS among undergraduate students, in influencing their attitudes towards risky sexual behaviour and reducing stigma towards People Living with HIV/AIDS.
