heart<MH3820> <i>was drawn</i> toward<MH5921> Absalom<MH53>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>So Joab<MH3097> sent<MH7971> <i>a messenger</i> to Tekoa<MH8620> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>brought<MH3947> a wise<MH2450> woman<MH802> from there<MH8033>, and said<MH559> to her, “Please<MH4994> follow<MH56> mourning<MH56> rites<MH56>, and put<MH3847> on<MH3847> mourning<MH60> garments<MH899b> now<MH4994>, and do not anoint<MH5480a> yourself with oil<MH8081> but be like a woman<MH802> who has been mourning<MH56> for the dead<MH4191> for many<MH7227a> days<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then go<MH935> to the king<MH4428> and speak<MH1696> to him in this<MH2088> way<MH1697>.” So Joab<MH3097> put<MH7760> the words<MH1697> in her mouth<MH6310>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Now when the woman<MH802> of Tekoa<MH8621> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>spoke<MH559> to the king<MH4428>, she fell<MH5307> on her face<MH639> to the ground<MH776> and prostrated<MH2331c> herself, and said<MH559>, “Help<MH3467>, O king<MH4428>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to her, “What<MH4100> is <i>troubling</i> you?” And she <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>answered<MH559>, “Truly<MH61> I am a widow<MH802, 490>, for my husband<MH376> is dead<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And your servant<MH8198> had two<MH8147> sons<MH1121>, but the two<MH8147> of them fought<MH5327b> in the field<MH7704>, and there<MH369> was<MH369> no<MH369> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>one<MH369> to save<MH5337> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>them from<MH996> each<MH996> other<MH996>, so one<MH259> struck<MH5221> the other<MH259> and killed<MH4191> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now behold<MH2009>, the entire<MH3605> family<MH4940> has risen<MH6965> against<MH5921> your servant<MH8198>, and they have said<MH559>, ‘Hand<MH5414> over<MH5414> the one who struck<MH5221> his brother<MH251>, so that we may put<MH4191> him to<MH4191> death<MH4191> for the life<MH5315> of his brother<MH251> whom<MH834> he killed<MH2026>, and eliminate<MH8045> the heir<MH3423> as<MH1571> well<MH1571>.’ So they will extinguish<MH3518> my coal<MH1513> which<MH834> is left<MH7604>, so as to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>leave<MH7760> my husband<MH376> neither<MH1115> name<MH8034> nor<MH1115> remnant<MH7611> on the face<MH6440> of the earth<MH127>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to the woman<MH802>, “Go<MH1980> to your home<MH1004>, and I will issue<MH6680> orders<MH6680> concerning<MH5921> you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>The woman<MH802> of Tekoa<MH8621> said<MH559> to the king<MH4428>, “My lord<MH113>, the king<MH4428>, the guilt<MH5771> is on me and my father’s<MH1> house<MH1004>, but the king<MH4428> and his throne<MH3678> are guiltless<MH5355a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>So the king<MH4428> said<MH559>, “Whoever speaks<MH1696> to you, bring<MH935> him to me, and he will not touch<MH5060> you anymore<MH3254, 5750>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then she said<MH559>, “May the king<MH4428> please<MH4994> remember<MH2142> the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>, <i>so that</i> the avenger<MH1350> of blood<MH1818> will not continue<MH7235a> to destroy<MH7843>, otherwise<MH3808> they will destroy<MH8045> my son<MH1121>.” And he said<MH559>, “As the LORD<MH3068> lives<MH2416a>, not one hair<MH8185> of your son<MH1121> shall fall<MH5307> to the ground<MH776>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then the woman<MH802> said<MH559>, “Please<MH4994> let your servant<MH8198> speak<MH1696> a word<MH1697> to my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>.” And he said<MH559>, “Speak<MH1696>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>The woman<MH802> said<MH559>, “Why<MH4100> then have you planned<MH2803> such<MH2088> a thing<MH2088> against<MH5921> the people<MH5971a> of God<MH430>? For in speaking<MH1696> this<MH2088> word<MH1697> the king<MH4428> is like one<MH818> who is guilty<MH818>, <i>in that</i> the king<MH4428> does not bring<MH7725> back<MH7725> his banished<MH5080> one<MH5080>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>For we will surely<MH4191> die<MH4191> and are like water<MH4325> spilled<MH5064> on the ground<MH776>, which<MH834> cannot<MH3808> be gathered<MH622> up<MH622>. Yet God<MH430> does not take<MH5375> away life<MH5315>, but makes<MH2803> plans<MH4284> so that the banished<MH5080> one<MH5080> will not be cast<MH5080> out<MH5080> from Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>the reason<MH834> I have come<MH935> to speak<MH1696> this<MH2088> word<MH1697> to my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> is that the people<MH5971a> have made<MH3372a> me afraid<MH3372a>; so your servant<MH8198> said<MH559>, ‘Let me now<MH4994> speak<MH1696> to the king<MH4428>, perhaps<MH194> the king<MH4428> will perform<MH6213a> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>request<MH1697> of his slave<MH519>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>For the king<MH4428> will listen<MH8085>, to save<MH5337> his slave<MH519> from the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>hand<MH3709> of the man<MH376> who would eliminate<MH8045> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>both<MH3162> me and my son<MH1121> from the inheritance<MH5159> of God<MH430>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then your servant<MH8198> said<MH559>, ‘Please<MH4994> let the word<MH1697> of my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> be <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>comforting<MH4496>, for as the angel<MH4397> of God<MH430>, so<MH3651> is my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> to discern<MH8085> good<MH2896b> and evil<MH7451b>. And may the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> be with you.’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> answered<MH6030a> and said<MH559> to the woman<MH802>, “Please<MH4994> do not hide<MH3582> anything<MH1697> from me that I am about to ask<MH7592> you.” And the woman<MH802> said<MH559>, “Let my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> please<MH4994> speak<MH1696>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So the king<MH4428> said<MH559>, “Is the hand<MH3027> of Joab<MH3097> with you in all<MH3605> this<MH2088>?” And the woman<MH802> replied<MH6030a>, “As your soul<MH5315> lives<MH2416a>, my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>, no<MH518> one can turn<MH3231> to the right<MH3231> or to the left<MH8041> from anything<MH3605> that my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> has spoken<MH1696>. Indeed<MH3588>, it was your servant<MH5650> Joab<MH3097> who<MH1931> commanded<MH6680> me, and it was he who put<MH7760> all<MH3605> these<MH428> words<MH1697> in the mouth<MH6310> of your servant<MH8198>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>In order<MH5668> to change<MH5437> the appearance<MH6440> of things<MH1697> your servant<MH5650> Joab<MH3097> has done<MH6213a> this<MH2088> thing<MH1697>. But my lord<MH113> is wise<MH2450>, like the wisdom<MH2451> of the angel<MH4397> of God<MH430>, to know<MH3045> all<MH3605> that is on the earth<MH776>.” <p class="hdg">Absalom Returns</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to Joab<MH3097>, “Behold<MH2009> now<MH4994>, I <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>will certainly do<MH6213a> this<MH2088> thing<MH1697>; go<MH1980> then, bring<MH7725> back<MH7725> the young<MH5288> man<MH5288> Absalom<MH53>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And Joab<MH3097> fell<MH5307> on his face<MH6440> to the ground<MH776>, prostrated<MH2331c> himself, and blessed<MH1288> the king<MH4428>; then Joab<MH3097> said<MH559>, “Today<MH3117> your servant<MH5650> knows<MH3045> that I have found<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in your sight<MH5869>, my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>, in that the king<MH4428> has performed<MH6213a> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>request<MH1697> of his servant<MH5650>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>So Joab<MH3097> arose<MH6965> and went<MH1980> to Geshur<MH1650>, and brought<MH935> Absalom<MH53> to Jerusalem<MH3389>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>However, the king<MH4428> said<MH559>, “He shall return<MH5437> to his own house<MH1004>, but he shall not see<MH7200> my face<MH6440>.” So Absalom<MH53> returned<MH5437> to his own house<MH1004> and did not see<MH7200> the king’s<MH4428> face<MH6440>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now in all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> there was no<MH3808> one<MH376> as handsome<MH3303> as Absalom<MH53>, so highly<MH3966> praised<MH1984b>; from the sole<MH3709> of his foot<MH7272> to the top<MH6936> of<MH6936> his head<MH6936> there was no<MH3808> impairment<MH4140b> in him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And when he cut<MH1548> the hair of his head<MH7218> (and it was at the end<MH7093> of every year<MH3117> that he cut<MH1548> <i>it,</i> because<MH3588> it was heavy<MH3515> on him, so he cut<MH1548> it), he weighed<MH8254> the hair<MH8181> of his head<MH7218> at <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>two<MH3967> hundred<MH3967> shekels<MH8255> by the king’s<MH4428> weight<MH68>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And to Absalom<MH53> there were born<MH3205> three<MH7969> sons<MH1121>, and one<MH259> daughter<MH1323> whose name<MH8034> was Tamar<MH8559>; she was a woman<MH802> of beautiful<MH3303> appearance<MH4758>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Now Absalom<MH53> lived<MH3427> two full<MH3117> years<MH8141> in Jerusalem<MH3389>, yet he did not see<MH7200> the king’s<MH4428> face<MH6440>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Then Absalom<MH53> sent<MH7971> for Joab<MH3097>, to send<MH7971> him to the king<MH4428>, but he would<MH14> not come<MH935> to him. So he sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> again<MH5750> a second<MH8145> time<MH8145>, but he would<MH14> not come<MH935>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Therefore he said<MH559> to his servants<MH5650>, “See<MH7200>, Joab’s<MH3097> plot<MH2513a> is next<MH413, 3027> to mine, and he has barley<MH8184> there<MH8033>; go<MH1980> and set<MH3341> it on fire<MH784>.” So Absalom’s<MH53> servants<MH5650> set<MH3341> the plot<MH2513a> on fire<MH784>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Then Joab<MH3097> got<MH6965> up<MH6965>, came<MH935> to Absalom<MH53> at his house<MH1004>, and said<MH559> to him, “Why<MH4100> have your servants<MH5650> set<MH3341> my plot<MH2513a> on fire<MH784>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Absalom<MH53> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>answered<MH559> Joab<MH3097>, “Behold<MH2009>, I sent<MH7971> for you, saying<MH559>, ‘Come<MH935> here<MH2008>, so that I may send<MH7971> you to the king<MH4428>, to say<MH559>, “Why<MH4100> have I come<MH935> from Geshur<MH1650>? It would be better<MH2896a> for me still<MH5750> to be there<MH8033>.”’ Now<MH6258> then, let me see<MH7200> the king’s<MH4428> face<MH6440>, and if<MH518> there<MH3426> is<MH3426> guilt<MH5771> in me, he can have me executed<MH4191>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/14-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>So when Joab<MH3097> came<MH935> to the king<MH4428> and told<MH5046> him, he summoned<MH7121> Absalom<MH53>.
