listen, O rulers! <t><p class="indent1">I will sing to the LORD, <t><p class="indent1">I will sing praise to the LORD, the God of Israel. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>“LORD, when You went out from Seir, <t><p class="indent1">When You marched from the field of Edom, <t><p class="indent1">The earth quaked, the heavens also dripped, <t><p class="indent1">Yes, the clouds dripped water. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>“The mountains quaked at the presence of the LORD, <t><p class="indent1"><i>Yes,</i> this Sinai, at the presence of the LORD, the God of Israel. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>“In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, <t><p class="indent1">In the days of Jael, the highways were deserted, <t><p class="indent1">And travelers went by roundabout ways. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>“The villagers ceased <i>to be;</i> they ceased in Israel <t><p class="indent1">Until I, Deborah, arose, <t><p class="indent1">Until I arose, a mother in Israel. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>“They chose new gods; <t><p class="indent1">Then war was in the gates. <t><p class="indent1">Was there a shield or spear seen <t><p class="indent1">Among forty thousand in Israel? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>“My heart <i>goes out</i> to the commanders of Israel, <t><p class="indent1">The volunteers among the people; <t><p class="indent1">Bless the LORD! <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>“Sing of it, you who ride on white donkeys, <t><p class="indent1">You who sit on <i>rich</i> carpets, <t><p class="indent1">And you who walk by the way. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>“At the sound of those who divide <i>flocks</i> among the watering places, <t><p class="indent1">There they shall recount the righteous acts of the LORD, <t><p class="indent1">The righteous acts toward His villagers in Israel. <t><p class="indent1">Then the people of the LORD went down to the gates. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>“Awake, awake, Deborah; <t><p class="indent1">Awake, awake, sing a song! <t><p class="indent1">Arise, Barak, and lead away your captives, you son of Abinoam. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>“Then down marched the survivors to the nobles; <t><p class="indent1">The people of the LORD marched down for Me against the mighty. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>“From Ephraim those whose root is in Amalek <i>came down,</i> <t><p class="indent1">After you, Benjamin, with your relatives; <t><p class="indent1">From Machir came down commanders <i>and</i> rulers, <t><p class="indent1">And from Zebulun those who <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>handle the scepter of the [office of] scribe. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>“And the heads of Issachar <i>came</i> with Deborah; <t><p class="indent1">As Issachar, so was Barak; <t><p class="indent1">Into the valley they rushed at his heels; <t><p class="indent1">Among the divisions of Reuben <t><p class="indent1">There were great searchings of heart. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>“Why [Reuben] did you linger among the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>sheepfolds, <t><p class="indent1">To hear the piping for the flocks? <t><p class="indent1">Among the divisions of Reuben <t><p class="indent1">There were great searchings of heart. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>“Gilead remained beyond the Jordan; <t><p class="indent1">And why did Dan live as an alien on ships? <t><p class="indent1">Asher sat [still] on the seacoast, <t><p class="indent1">And remained by its landings. <t><p class="indent1">[These did not come to battle for God’s people.] <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>“But Zebulun was a people who risked their lives to the [point of] death; <t><p class="indent1">Naphtali also, on the heights of the field. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>“The kings came and fought; <t><p class="indent1">Then the kings of Canaan fought <t><p class="indent1">At Taanach by the waters of Megiddo. <t><p class="indent1">Spoils of silver they did not obtain. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>“From the heavens the stars fought, <t><p class="indent1">From their courses they fought against Sisera. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>“The torrent Kishon swept the enemy away, <t><p class="indent1">The ancient torrent, the torrent Kishon. <t><p class="indent1">O my soul, march on with strength. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>“Then the horses’ hoofs beat [loudly] <t><p class="indent1">Because of the galloping--the galloping of his valiant <i>and</i> powerful steeds. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>‘Curse <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>Meroz,’ said the messenger of the LORD, <t><p class="indent1">‘Utterly curse its inhabitants; <t><p class="indent1">Because they did not come to the help of the LORD, <t><p class="indent1">To the help of the LORD against the mighty.’ <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>“Most blessed of women is Jael, <t><p class="indent1">The wife of Heber the Kenite; <t><p class="indent1">Most blessed is she of women in the tent. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>“Sisera asked for water and she gave him milk; <t><p class="indent1">She brought him curds in a magnificent bowl. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>“She reached out her [left] hand for the tent peg, <t><p class="indent1">And her right hand for the workmen’s hammer. <t><p class="indent1">Then she struck Sisera, she smashed his head; <t><p class="indent1">And she shattered and pierced his temple. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>“He bowed, he fell, he lay [still] at her feet; <t><p class="indent1">At her feet he bowed, he fell; <t><p class="indent1">Where he bowed, there he fell dead. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>“Out of the window she looked down and lamented (cried out in a shrill voice), <t><p class="indent1">The mother of Sisera through the lattice, <t><p class="indent1">‘Why is his chariot delayed in coming? <t><p class="indent1">Why have the hoofbeats of his chariots delayed?’ <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>“Her wise ladies answered her, <t><p class="indent1">Indeed, she repeated her words to herself, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>‘Are they not finding and dividing the spoil? <t><p class="indent1">A maiden (concubine) or two for every man; <t><p class="indent1">A spoil of dyed garments for Sisera, <t><p class="indent1">A spoil of dyed garments embroidered, <t><p class="indent1">Two pieces of dyed garments embroidered for the neck of the plunderer?’ <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/5-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>“So let all Your enemies perish, O LORD;
