J.—The Jets tried a little more Tim Tebow, and a lot more tricks Monday night. Still, it was not enough. </p><p> The Texans (5-0) remained undefeated, holding off the Jets, 23-17, at Met Life Stadium. It was a more competitive contest than many expected, as the Jets (2-3) stayed close with strong special teams and solid defense. Joe McKnight had a 100-yard kickoff return for the Jets' third quarter touchdown, and coach Rex Ryan pulled out all stops — using a fake punt, an onside kick, and going for it multiple times on fourth-and-one. </p><p> However, the Texans did what was necessary to win, led by running back Arian Foster (26 carries, 152 yards, 1 TD) and a sensational game from defensive end J. J. Watt. </p><p> <em>Here are three things we learned:</em> </p><h2> Watt is a dominant player </h2><p> His stats don't tell the whole story. He saved a touchdown near the goal line when he deflected a pass by Mark Sanchez, who had Chaz Schilens wide open in the end zone. Watt caused another turnover when he tipped a Sanchez pass into the arms of teammate Brice McCain for an interception. That was a huge momentum swing in the game. The Jets trailed just 14-7 at the time, and were threatening to tie the game just before halftime. Instead, McCain returned the interception 86 yards to the Jets' nine yard line, setting up a field goal that gave Houston a 17-7 halftime lead. </p><p> Watt has been the NFL's best defensive player so far this season. (AP Photo)</span></div><h2> Jets' offense still makes too many mistakes </h2><p> This was so much better than their 34-0 loss to the 49ers. But the Jets' offense still has no consistency, no identity to hang its hat on. Tebow (five carries, 19 yards) was more involved offensively, and should have completed his only pass, a beautiful long throw in the first half that was dropped by Jason Hill. </p><p> However, Ryan and offensive coordinator Tony Sparano still seem unsure how much to use Tebow, and when to use him. There were many occasions when the Jets took too long to make substitutions, and to call plays. On a fourth-quarter drive, Tebow had a 13-yard run to give the Jets a first-and-goal, but two plays later, he was out of the game, and the Jets settled for a field goal. </p><p> Then there is Sanchez, who remained inconsistent (14 for 31, 230 yards, one TD, two INT). You never know what to expect from Sanchez from play to play, from pass to pass. He makes a good throw. He makes a bad throw. In his fourth season, Sanchez's game has not taken a step forward, and Ryan has been clearly reluctant to turn things over to Tebow. Cushing went down in the second quarter, and limped off the field and into the locker room under his own power. However, the extent of Cushing's injury was not immediately known. </p><p> Cushing entered the game leading the team in tackles, and losing him for an extended period would be a blow to the Texans'
