Tears streamed from Maria Barros's eyes as her husband gathered a reply to what had just happened.</p><p>"My son, he's a good boy; he didn't do this," said the father, who is also named Casimiro Barros.</p><p>About 10 feet away, the family of Chiara Levin, the 22-year-old woman killed by the bullet that prosecutors and a witness say Barros fired during a shootout outside a Dorchester party in 2007, walked in a tight pack toward an elevator, theirs arms around each others' shoulders.</p><p>Minutes later, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley stood outside the courtroom and said he was satisfied with the verdict, even though Barros had been charged with first-degree murder.</p><p>"It was a reasonable verdict based on the facts," Conley said. "It was a very tragic incident with these two men, Mr. Barros and Mr. Andrade, acting so reckless in committing a shootout in a very densely populated neighborhood. We felt, after investigating the case, that there was sufficient evidence to charge both men with first-degree. They were in the middle of a crowded street having a Wild West gunfight."</p><p>The night of the shooting, March 24, 2007, Levin, who was visiting from New York City for her great-aunt's 90th birthday, had gone to a nightclub with two college friends. There, they met Manuel "Spank" Andrade, 35, and two of his friends, who took the group to the Dorchester party. Some time later at the party, Andrade and his friends allegedly got into a fight with a group of men that included Barros. Words were exchanged and then gunfire.</p><p>As the fight spilled outside, Levin was sitting in the Cadillac Escalade they had arrived in. Andrade got into the vehicle, and he and Barros allegedly continued to shoot at one another.</p><p>Levin was struck in the head. Her death sparked widespread outrage.</p><p>Andrade is expected to go on trial next month. Prosecutors allege that he started the fight that led to the shootout. Andrade has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.</p><p>The Barros family and the Levin family are expected to return to the courtroom today and may give impact statements before Suffolk Superior Court Judge Christine McEvoy imposes a sentence.</p><p>The six-woman, six-man jury deliberated for three full days before convicting Barros.</p><p>Barros, 22, of Roxbury, did not react as the verdict was read. He was also convicted of aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm.</p><p>Two days ago, the jury sent a note to McEvoy asking for a clarification of what constitutes armed assault with intent to murder, a charge Barros also faced. McEvoy spent about 20 minutes explaining the charge to the jurors, and yesterday, they found Barros not guilty of that count.</p><p>The maximum penalty for voluntary manslaughter is 20 years, the maximum for assault and battery with a deadly weapon is 10 years, and the maximum for gun possession is 5 years. Conley said he will push for those maximums and to have them served consecutively.</p><p>Conley praised Jessica Nunez, the prosecution's key witness, who, during the trial, identified Barros as the gunman. She and her family have relocated. Nunez, a former friend of Barros, testified that Barros fired the gun and later confided he hoped no one had been killed in the crossfire.</p><p>Levin's family sat in the first two rows of the courtroom and were silent and motionless as the jury foreman read the verdict.</p><p>Conley said of the Levin family: "They are a family of tremendous grace and dignity. I hope they will be very satisfied with the verdict."</p><p>Barros, wearing a light blue dress shirt and a dark blue jacket, looked straight ahead as the jury foreman read the verdict. Afterward, court officers placed handcuffs and shackles on him. As Barros was being led away, he turned toward his parents sitting in the back row of the courtroom. He shook his head slightly and said something inaudible.</p><p>Outside the courtroom, Barros's lawyer, Christopher Belezos, said, "There is no question voluntary manslaughter is much better than first-degree, but Mr. Barros has always asserted his innocence.
