640w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px"/> </picture> Mahashmashana is a Sanskrit word for a cremation ground, and it seems a very <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/father-john-misty">Father John Misty</a> thing to name an album after that. Josh Tillman (as he’s presumably still known to his family and friends) has always been an artist who’s done things on his own terms, and his sixth album is as idiosyncratic as ever.</p> <p>It’s an album filled with lush orchestrations, sly references to mortality and rebirth (to fit in with the album’s title) and songs that are unafraid to go on for, in some instances, over eight minutes. And, as ever with Tillman, it’s utterly compelling to listen to.</p> <p>The title track (which clocks in at over nine minutes) is beautifully orchestrated, with its string arrangements swooping and soaring all over the place. Despite the downbeat lyrics (there’s talk of doing “the corpse dance”), there’s a euphoric air to the track, especially when a squalling saxophone is added to the mix. An opening track to play loud.</p> <p>Although that title track is quintessential Father John Misty, there’s a pleasing mix of styles throughout Mahashmashana. She Cleans Up is one of the best things Tillman has ever done, an infectiously catchy garage rocker with nods to <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/beck"><strong>Beck</strong></a>‘s more funky experiment. It’s also one of the few songs to reference Jonathan Glazer’s film <em>Under The Skin</em> (“What is the one about the female alien, Scarlett drives the Scottish countryside inside of a white van”).</p> <p>Later, Screamland (another epic, running to nearly seven minutes) is the closest that Tillman’s come to stadium rock, a big synth-soaked ballad with a swelling chorus of “stay young, get numb, keep dreaming”. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Father John Misty album without a self-referentially meta song, and Josh Tillman And The Accidental Dose, which edges close to lounge jazz as Tillman recounts a nightmarish acid trip that begins with the sound of <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/van-morrison"><strong>Van Morrison</strong></a>‘s Astral Weeks and ends with the taste of ice cream. It’s a tribute to Tillman’s genius that this should sound utterly self-indulgent, yet remains utterly captivating.</p> <p>The highpoint though is the slinky, funky I Guess Time Just Makes Fools Of Us All, which first appeared on this summer’s Greatish Hits compilations – another nine-minute epic which starts with a parping horn section, and then seems to segue into <strong>Chris Rea</strong>‘s The Road To Hell, as strange as that may seem. There’s talk of turning down a Rolling Stone cover, and advice from image consultants, and the whole thing sounds like <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/bob-dylan"><strong>Bob Dylan</strong></a>‘s Desolation Row if <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/nile-rodgers"><strong>Nile Rodgers</strong></a> was on production duties. Brilliant, in other words.</p> <p>It’s understandable that some long-term Misty fans may have felt that Tillman’s lost his way slightly over the last few years – neither <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/reviews/albums/father-john-misty-gods-favorite-customer">God’s Favorite Customer</a> and <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/reviews/albums/father-john-misty-chloe-and-the-next-20th-century">Chloe And The Next 20th Century</a> really lived up to some of his earlier records. Mahashmashana though sees him back on form – this is an album that stands next to <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/reviews/albums/father-john-misty-fear-fun">Fear Fun</a> or <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/reviews/albums/father-john-misty-love-honeybear">I Love You, Honeybear</a> as one of his finest, and if he intends Mahashmashana to be his own personal cremation ground for his persona, then it’s a hell of a way to go.
