The call to be an example is rooted in the broader biblical principle of living a life that reflects Christ's teachings. The Apostle Paul, writing to Titus, underscores the necessity for leaders and believers to model good works, which are the outward expressions of faith (James 2:17). The cultural context of Crete, where Titus was ministering, was known for its moral laxity (Titus 1:12). Therefore, demonstrating good works was crucial for countering negative stereotypes and establishing credibility. This aligns with Jesus' teaching in Matthew 5:16, where believers are encouraged to let their light shine before others.
In your teaching show integrity,
Integrity in teaching refers to the consistency and honesty in conveying the truth of the Gospel. Paul stresses this to ensure that the message of Christ remains untainted by false doctrines or personal gain. The historical context of the early church involved various heresies and false teachings, making integrity vital for preserving the purity of the Christian message. This mirrors the Old Testament emphasis on truthfulness and faithfulness, as seen in Proverbs 12:22, which states that the Lord detests lying lips but delights in people who are trustworthy.
dignity,
Dignity in teaching involves maintaining a sense of respect and seriousness in the delivery of the Gospel. This reflects the gravity and importance of the message being shared. In the Greco-Roman world, where rhetoric and public speaking were highly valued, presenting oneself with dignity would enhance the credibility and reception of the message. This concept is echoed in 1 Timothy 4:12, where Paul advises Timothy to set an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, underscoring the importance of a dignified demeanor in ministry.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Titus
A young pastor and a trusted companion of the Apostle Paul, tasked with organizing the church in Crete and ensuring sound doctrine and good works among believers.

2. Paul the Apostle
The author of the letter to Titus, providing guidance and instruction for church leadership and Christian living.

3. Crete
An island in the Mediterranean where Titus was stationed to lead and instruct the early Christian community.

4. Early Christian Church
The context in which Titus was ministering, characterized by the need for sound teaching and moral integrity.

5. Good Works
The actions and behaviors that reflect a life transformed by the Gospel, emphasized as a testimony to others.
Teaching Points
Exemplary Conduct
As Christians, we are called to be role models in our communities, demonstrating our faith through consistent good works.

Integrity in Teaching
Our teaching, whether formal or informal, should be marked by honesty and truthfulness, reflecting the character of Christ.

Dignity in Behavior
Our actions should be conducted with respect and honor, upholding the dignity of our calling as followers of Christ.

Consistency in Faith and Works
There should be no disconnect between what we profess and how we live; our faith should be evident in our daily actions.

Influence through Example
Our lives can have a profound impact on others, drawing them to Christ through the example we set in our conduct and character.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Titus 2

What are your job responsibilities?

How should Christians live and lead with integrity?

Titus 2 – How do we reconcile its emphasis on good works with other passages that stress salvation by faith alone?

What defines lifestyle evangelism?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(7) In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works.--Here St. Paul shows Titus that his especial work is the instruction of no one peculiar class or order, or age or sex, but that he is so to fashion his whole life that it may afford a "pattern" to all--men and women, bond as well as free; in all things a ceaseless activity was prescribed to the superintending presbyter in Crete. In everything that was earnest and true, Titus ought to be the one showing an example to the rest; in peaceful, quiet days, as in times of danger and threatening, he must set the pattern--now of useful labour and toil--now of brave, patient endurance for the Lord's sake.
In doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity.--The older authorities omit "sincerity." Neither of the terms "uncorruptness" and "gravity" refers to the subject-matter of the "doctrine" or "teaching," but to the bearing and behaviour of the "teacher." While he occupies the place of a teacher, Titus must show in his life and conversation "uncorruptness"--apthoria, the word found in the older authorities, the meaning of which differs very slightly from the word adiapthoria, found in the received text. He must, in all those points of his life which are connected with his teaching, show a purity (chastity) and freedom from all interested motives; he must be above seeking for popular applause; but besides this "uncorruptness," in everything touching public instruction he must aim at a certain "gravity," not only in his public delivery of sermons and lectures, but also in his general private intercourse with his flock. He must, in a word, never forget he is the chief teacher in the Church of Crete of his Master's religion.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 7. - An ensample for a pattern, A.V.; thy doctrine for doctrine, A.V.; R.T. omits sincerity (ἀφθαρσίαν), which is in the T.R. In all things (περὶ πάντα); as 1 Timothy 1:19 (περὶ τὴν πίστιν); "concerning, in the matter of" (Ellicott on 1 Timothy 1:19). But it is usually taken as in the text, "in all things showing thyself," etc. Showing thyself, etc. With regard to the somewhat unusual addition of the reflexive pronoun to the verb in the middle voice, Bishop Ellicott remarks, "Emphasis and perspicuity are gained" by it. An ensample (τύπον).
