My introduction to her work was <a href="/work/409" data-workid="409" data-title="The-Blind-Assassin" rel="nofollow" target="_top">The Blind Assassin</a> (a very long time ago and in translation) and since then I had explored a lot of her other work. <br><br>What do you plan to read? If you had read her before, which of her works is your favorite? It may have been because I struggled with the flow as she did not use quotation marks. I really have no desire for a re-read as I found the theme to be overused and predictable. So you learn even more about the play as he's teaching it to his actors/inmates. It is a dystopian novel set in the US in a near future (compared to when the novel was published in the mid 1980s) where a theocratic and ultra-patriarchal society has taken power in a political coup, overthrowing and massacring the President and Congress. We only find out later how the coup succeeded and, as before, I was struck by how rather unrealistically quickly this new regime seemed to have altered the mindset of the majority of the population. The storyline is suitably horrifying and the dystopic element works well, though the narrative does meander somewhat and I found the timeline sometimes a little confusing. Judging from the reviews, she hit an unhappy nerve: people were seeking to understand the crash (greed) and instead Atwood delivered a fascinating insight into debt and credit from a moral, philosophical, historical, sociological and narrative perspective. She ends on a strong ecological note with the Scrooge analogy: 1. in the past, we tended to our resources and lived in harmony with our environment; 2. in the present, we are pilfering our planet to the point of no return; 3. in the future, we have an opportunity to make amends... pay back for our greed. In this dystopia, the world has turned to pot thanks to unchecked, money-motivated, unethical genetic engineering. It made for a good companion read to the essays on payback! Whereas I enjoyed the character development, narrative structure and some of the genetic inventions, I really didn't care for the violence and cynicism. I am certainly not tempted to finish the trilogy (this is the first), although from reading the blurbs, it sounds like it all comes together elegantly. I just finished an essay called "Reflections on <i>The Handmaid's Tale</i>", which was originally a talk given in 2015 on the book's 30th anniversary at Tennessee Tech University. In this essay she explains some of the background to the novel, how it was received at the time and some sources in history for what she portrays in the book. <br><br>I read the book in 1987 a couple of years after it came out. I'm not sure I completely understood it at the time, and I'm probably due for a re-read. This includes over 60 of Atwood's essays, lectures, tributes, introductions and other nonfiction pieces from 2004 to 2022. Atwood has a round-about way of getting to a topic that I find interesting and witty. No matter what the topic, though, she almost always touches on the environment and climate change, directly or in passing. As the daughter of a university science professor, this is part of her DNA. <br><br>Some of my favorite essays were "Anne of Green Gables" (reflecting on the 100th anniversary), "Frozen in Time", "Literature and the Environment", "Shakespeare and Me", "Reflections on The Handmaid's Tale" (30th anniversary), and "Caught in Time's Current" (describing how she came to write the poem "Dearly"). There are also tributes to writers, including Rachel Carson, Ursula LeGuin, Alice Munro, Doris Lessing and Salman Rushdie, among others. An eclectic and mostly excellent collection.</div></div></section><a class="anchor" name="n8581319"></a><div class="addamessagecnt "><div id="fp0" class="nowposting" style="display:
