understand and explore the text. These illustrations promote the participants of the Passover seder to discover the richness of the text by highlighting key terms, revealing the literal meaning of idiomatic expressions, illuminating the Bible verses, etc., and expand the possibilities of its interpretation. The interaction of words and images mediates the religious experience of the participants and carries tremendous intellectual, religious-historical, and creative power.</div> </div> </div> <div id="raw_abstract" class="tab-pane "> <div class="abstract-panel panel-box mb-0 rounded shadow-none"> <div class="f16">The folios of the Barcelona, Kaufmann, and Sassoon Haggadahs (London, British Library, MS Add. 14761; Budapest, Hungarian Academy of Science, Kaufmann Collection, MS A 422; Jerusalem, Israel Museum MS 181/41) are full of illuminations that facilitate the understanding and exploration of the text. Word images push participants in the Passover seder to discover the text's riches by highlighting key terms and passages, exposing the literal meaning of idiomatic expressions, illuminating biblical verses, wrenching words out of context to reveal their interconnections and subtext, juxtaposing Hebrew-the sacred language-with the visual vernacular, and enlivening the gathering with pictorial puns. Some images gloss the text, while others expand its interpretive possibilities. Some images open onto a range of associations, while others redouble the text at hand. The addition of illumination to these haggadahs enriches the text's interpretive possibilities and structures fresh responses to its biblical story. In so doing, the imagery advances the main objective of the seder: to elaborate upon the story of God delivering the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt such that all participants in the celebration are deserving of praise. Densely freighted and multivalent, the interplay of word and image mediates the religious experience of the participants, imbuing these haggadahs with tremendous intellectual, religio-historical, and creative force.</div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="f15 panel-box rounded shadow-none border"> <h4 class="mt-0 heading-count">Authors</h4> <div class="mb-3"> <article-authors tid="83819283" list="[{"name":"Abby Kornfeld","sequence":1}]" verified="[]" page="work" ></article-authors> </div> <div class="alert alert-warning mb-0"> <h5 class="mt-0 bg-warning text-dark px-3 rounded d-inline-block"> I am an author on this paper </h5> <div class="font-weight-bold f13"> Click your name to claim this paper and add it to your profile. </div> </div> </div> <div class="f15 panel-box rounded shadow-none border"> <h4 class="mt-0 heading-count">Reviews</h4> <div class="d-flex flex-wrap flex-md-nowrap"> <div class="flex-grow-1"> <h4 class="f16"> Primary Rating <a href="javascript:;" data-toggle="tooltip" data-placement="right" title="The primary rating indicates the level of overall quality for the paper."> <i class="ivu-icon ivu-icon-md-help-circle f18 ml-2"></i> </a> </h4> <div class="d-flex flex-wrap flex-md-nowrap align-items-center alert mb-0"> <div class="d-flex align-items-center justify-content-center"> <Rate disabled allow-half value="3.8" style="font-size: 28px;"></Rate> <strong class="f20 m-3" style="color: #f5a623;">3.8</strong> </div> <div class="text-muted mx-4"> Not enough ratings </div> </div> <h4 class="f16"> Secondary Ratings <a href="javascript:;" data-toggle="tooltip" data-placement="right" title="Secondary ratings independently reflect strengths or weaknesses of the paper."> <i class="ivu-icon ivu-icon-md-help-circle f18 ml-2"></i> </a> </h4> <div class="d-flex flex-wrap flex-md-nowrap alert"> <div class="d-flex flex-shrink-0 align-items-center mr-3"> <h5 class="my-0">Novelty</h5> <strong class="mx-4">-</strong> </div> <div class="d-flex flex-shrink-0 align-items-center mr-3"> <h5 class="my-0">Significance</h5> <strong class="mx-4">-</strong> </div> <div class="d-flex flex-shrink-0 align-items-center mr-3"> <h5 class="my-0">Scientific rigor</h5> <strong class="mx-4">-</strong> </div> </div> </div> <div class="flex-shrink-0"> <div class="border bg-light py-2 px-4"> <h5 class="mb-1">Rate this paper</h5> <Rate class="f24" @on-change="function(value){ location.href='https://www.peeref.com/works/83819283/comments?rating='+value }"></Rate> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div id="collection" class="f15 panel-box rounded shadow-none border"> <h4 class="mt-0 heading-count">Recommended</h4> <div class="my-3"> <ul class="nav nav-pills border-bottom pb-3" style="list-style: none; padding-left: 0;"> <li class="active"> <a href="#articles_from_related" data-toggle="tab" class="mx-0 f15"> <strong>Related</strong> </a> </li> <li class=""> <a href="#articles_from_authors" data-toggle="tab" class="mx-0 f15"> <strong>From Same Authors</strong> </a> </li> <li class=""> <a href="#articles_from_journal" data-toggle="tab" class="mx-0 f15"> <strong>From Same Journal</strong> </a> </li> </ul> <div class="tab-content"> <div id="articles_from_related" class="tab-pane active"> <div class="my-4 border-bottom"> <div> <span class="d-inline-block badge badge-blue"> Review </span> <span class="d-inline-block badge badge-cyan"> Environmental Sciences </span> </div> <h4> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/works/33541524" class="text-dark hover-underline">Fish to learn: insights into the effects of environmental chemicals on eye development and visual function in zebrafish</a> </h4> <p class="text-ellipsis-2">Wenlong Huang, Tianjie Wu, Ruotong Wu, Jiajun Peng, Qiong Zhang, Xiaoling Shi, Kusheng Wu</p> <div class="d-flex mb-3"> <div class="flex-shrink-0 d-none d-sm-block"> <img src="https://peeref-open.s3.amazonaws.com/storage/images/covers/2567.jpg" alt="" class="border mr-3" width="100"> </div> <div class="p-3 rounded" style="background-color: #e8f3ff;"> <strong>Summary:</strong> Vision is crucial for human beings, but millions of people worldwide suffer from congenital visual impairment. Despite his less-than-virtuous character, the monks commemorated him as a loyal Capetian vassal and brave crusader. Comparing the shrine's translatio narrative to a later vernacular poem, this article argues that the shrine and poem are part of a visual and textual culture that grew out of established crusader legends. Although Geoffrey's presence on the shrine has not received much scholarly attention, the drawing can be seen as evidence of the monks' success in transforming him from a mid-level member of the French nobility into a great crusader and vassal of the king of France. </div> </div> <div class="d-flex justify-content-between"> <p class="font-weight-bold"> <span class="text-primary">GESTA-INTERNATIONAL CENTER OF MEDIEVAL ART</span> (2024) </p> <div class="flex-shrink-0"> <a class="btn btn-outline-primary btn-sm" href="https://www.peeref.com/works/82013645/add-to-collection" target="_blank"> <strong>Add to Collection</strong> </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="my-4 border-bottom"> <div> <span class="d-inline-block badge badge-blue"> Article </span> <span class="d-inline-block badge badge-cyan"> Art </span> </div> <h4> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/works/28025941" class="text-dark hover-underline">Forging the Augustinian Past: The Rule-Giving of Saint Augustine in a Duecento Gradual</a> </h4> <p class="text-ellipsis-2">Krisztina Ilko</p> <div class="d-flex mb-3"> <div class="p-3 rounded" style="background-color: #e8f3ff;"> <strong>Summary:</strong> This study examines the growth of the Rule-giving image of the Augustinian friars using a well-preserved and elaborate late-duecento gradual manuscript.
