This phrase emphasizes the rarity and inappropriateness of snow in summer, symbolizing something that is out of place or unnatural. In biblical literature, snow is often associated with purity and cleansing (<a href="/isaiah/1-18.htm">Isaiah 1:18</a>), but here it serves as a metaphor for something unexpected and unsuitable.<p><b>and rain at harvest</b><br>Rain during the harvest season is detrimental, as it can ruin crops that are ready to be gathered. In the agrarian society of ancient Israel, timing was crucial for successful farming. Rain at harvest would be seen as a disruption to the natural order, causing potential loss and hardship. This imagery underscores the idea of something occurring at an inappropriate time, which can lead to negative consequences.<p><b>honor does not befit a fool</b><br>In the wisdom literature of the Bible, a fool is often characterized by a lack of understanding, moral deficiency, and an unwillingness to learn (<a href="/proverbs/1-7.htm">Proverbs 1:7, 10</a>:23). Honor, which implies respect and esteem, is misaligned with the nature of a fool. The verse suggests that bestowing honor on a fool is as incongruous as snow in summer or rain during harvest. This aligns with the broader biblical theme that true honor is reserved for those who live righteously and wisely (<a href="/proverbs/3-35.htm">Proverbs 3:35</a>). The verse serves as a caution against elevating those who lack wisdom and integrity, as it disrupts the moral and social order intended by God.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/s/solomon.htm">Solomon</a></b><br>Traditionally regarded as the author of Proverbs, Solomon was the son of King David and known for his wisdom. Rain falls in the usual course of things only at stated times; whence arose the phrase of "the early and of latter rains" (see on Proverbs 16:15). From spring to October or November was the dry season, and a storm at harvest time was regarded, not merely as destructive or inconvenient, but as portentous and even supernatural (see <a href="/1_samuel/12-17.htm">1 Samuel 12:17</a>, etc.). The two cases are types of all that is incongruous and unsuitable. The LXX., apparently regarding their experience in Egypt rather than the actual text, translate, "As dew in harvest, and as rain in summer." <span class="cmt_word">So honour is not seemly for a fool</span> (ver. 8; <a href="/proverbs/19-10.htm">Proverbs 19:10</a>). It is quite out of place to show respect to a stupid and ungodly man, or to raise him to a post of dignity; such conduct will only confirm him in his folly, give others a wrong impression concerning him, and afford him increased power of mischief. The Greeks had a proverb about giving honour to unsuitable objects: they called it washing an ass's head with nitre. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/proverbs/26-1.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">Like snow</span><br /><span class="heb">כַּשֶּׁ֤לֶג ׀</span> <span class="translit">(kaš·še·leḡ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-k, Article | Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7950.htm">Strong's 7950: </a> </span><span class="str2">Snow</span><br /><br /><span class="word">in summer</span><br /><span class="heb">בַּקַּ֗יִץ</span> <span class="translit">(baq·qa·yiṣ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7019.htm">Strong's 7019: </a> </span><span class="str2">To awake</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and rain</span><br /><span class="heb">וְכַמָּטָ֥ר</span> <span class="translit">(wə·ḵam·mā·ṭār)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw, Preposition-k, Article | Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4306.htm">Strong's 4306: </a> </span><span class="str2">Rain</span><br /><br /><span class="word">at harvest,</span><br /><span class="heb">בַּקָּצִ֑יר</span> <span class="translit">(baq·qā·ṣîr)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7105.htm">Strong's 7105: </a> </span><span class="str2">Severed, harvest, the crop, the time, the reaper, a limb</span><br /><br /><span class="word">honor</span><br /><span class="heb">כָּבֽוֹד׃</span> <span class="translit">(kā·ḇō·wḏ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3519.htm">Strong's 3519: </a> </span><span class="str2">Weight, splendor, copiousness</span><br /><br /><span class="word">does not</span><br /><span class="heb">לֹא־</span> <span class="translit">(lō-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Adverb - Negative particle<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3808.htm">Strong's 3808: </a> </span><span class="str2">Not, no</span><br /><br /><span class="word">befit</span><br /><span class="heb">נָאוֶ֖ה</span> <span class="translit">(nā·weh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Adjective - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5000.htm">Strong's 5000: </a> </span><span class="str2">Suitable, beautiful</span><br /><br /><span class="word">a fool.</span><br /><span class="heb">לִכְסִ֣יל</span> <span class="translit">(liḵ·sîl)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-l | Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3684.htm">Strong's 3684: </a> </span><span class="str2">Stupid fellow, dullard, fool</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/proverbs/26-1.htm">Proverbs 26:1 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/proverbs/26-1.htm">Proverbs 26:1 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/proverbs/26-1.htm">Proverbs 26:1 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/proverbs/26-1.htm">Proverbs 26:1 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/proverbs/26-1.htm">Proverbs 26:1 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/proverbs/26-1.htm">Proverbs 26:1 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/proverbs/26-1.htm">Proverbs 26:1 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/proverbs/26-1.htm">Proverbs 26:1 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/proverbs/26-1.htm">Proverbs 26:1 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/proverbs/26-1.htm">Proverbs 26:1 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/proverbs/26-1.htm">OT Poetry: Proverbs 26:1 Like snow in summer and as rain (Prov.
