The majority of our financial supporters are <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130805202602/http://www.doaj.org/doaj?func=loadTemplate&template=members&uiLanguage=en">libraries, universities, research centers and related consortia and associations</a> and we have always been grateful to these institutions for their generous support. As open access becomes more mandated and as Europe moves closer to 2020 and the associated EU initiatives, we are seeing the funding bodies move into the spotlight. Of course, these funders have always played a vital role in funding research but it is only recently that they have started to be recognised for the key role they play. As they come closer to the research they fund, so too will their contribution to open access become more transparent.</p> <p>DOAJ is delighted that today we have received funding from the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130805202602/http://www.fwf.ac.at/">Austrian Science Fund (FWF)</a>, the first research funder who has taken steps to financially support our efforts directly. Falk Reckling, Head of the Department for Strategic Analysis, said:</p> <p>"The amout of use and reuse and the levels of content quality in Gold Open Access journals are constantly rising which is reflected, for example, by the fact that Austrian Science Fund (FWF) has covered processing charges for more than 300 papers and 60 books in 2012.</p> <p>"Nonetheless, most Open Access journals are still rather young so that indicators of prestige and quality, such as bibliometric tools, cannot be systematically applied.
