There she worked on projects relating to paralegals, land reform and social security (which includes social insurance mechanisms). Elsabė has published- and spoken widely on topics relating to constitutional law, human rights, health law, ethics and social security. She joined the Department of Internal Medicine Division Clinical Haematology (UFS) in 2013 and worked with the team treating patients from the Free State, Northern Cape, and Lesotho, diagnosed with hematologic malignancies. During this period, Dr van Jaarsveld realized how little professionals understand about the Palliative care needs of patients diagnosed with serious life-threatening diseases. She completed her post graduate Diploma in Palliative care (UCT, 2014) and later a MPhil in Palliative care (2018) from the University of Cap Town. Dr van Jaarsveld is a board member of the Bloemfontein Hospice, and a member of The Palliative care Practitioners Association of South Africa as well as Pain South Africa. She is regularly invited as a speaker in conferences and other academical lectures on palliative care and participated in publications such as Palliative care guidelines in renal care as well as the Standard Treatment Guidelines for primary and Hospital level for South Africa pertaining palliative care. She works closely with the CEO of the Universitas Academical Hospital and Free State DOH to implement Palliative care Structures for the Free State. Dr van Jaarsveld is currently employed by the FSDOH as a medical specialist in the Department of Oncology. He completed six university courses in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics from the same institution. He was subsequently appointed as a consultant neurologist at the University of Stellenbosch, before starting the Epilepsy Unit at Constantiaberg Hospital, Cape Town in 2000. He subsequently established a research unit in the same hospital, is affiliated as a part-time consultant to the Neurology Department at the University of Cape Town and the University of Stellenbosch, and has published 18 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, including one of the few completed randomised controlled trials of epilepsy surgery in adults. He serves as a member of the Neurological Association of South Africa executive committee. In 2014 he established a dedicated multidisciplinary Motor Neuron Disease / Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (MND/ALS) Clinic at Chris Hani Bara. Through the MND/ALS clinic he participates in the drive for yet almost non-existent genomic research on African ALS patients.
