We make comparison among various power gating schemes in terms of power delay product, energy loss, and wake-up time using the 45-nm Predictive Technology Model. In my conclusion, the Dual-Switch Power Gating (DSPG) shows lower power delay product, smaller energy loss, faster wake-up time than the other power gating schemes such as the Single-Switch and Charge-Recycled Power Gating schemes. Based on these advantages, the DSPG is suggested in this paper as a viable candidate suitable to a fine-grain leakage control scheme, where logic blocks go in and out very frequently and shortly between the active and sleep modes.

Distributed Optimization Framework for Industry 4.0 Automated Warehouses

Appears in:

inis 18(15): e2

Authors:

Ajay Kattepur, Hemant Kumar Rath, Arijit Mukherjee, Anantha Simha

Abstract:

Robotic automation is being increasingly proselytized in the industrial and manufacturing sectors to increase production efficiency. Typically, complex industrial tasks cannot be satisfied by individual robots, rather coordination and information sharing is required. Centralized robotic control and coordination is ill-advised in such settings, due to high failure probabilities, inefficient overheads and lack of scalability. In this paper, we model the interactions among robotic units using intelligent agent based interactions. As such agents behave autonomously, coordinating task/resource allocation is performed via distributed algorithms. We use the motivating example of warehouse inventory automation to optimally allocate and distribute delivery tasks among multiple robotic agents. The optimization is decomposed using primal and dual decomposition techniques to operate in minimal latency, minimal battery usage or maximal utilization scenarios.

Phase and Time Synchronization for 5G C-RAN: Requirements, Design Challenges and Recent Advances in Standardization

Appears in:

inis 18(15): e3

Authors:

Daniel Philip Venmani, Yannick Lagadec, Olivier Lemoult, Fabrice Deletre

Abstract:

Cloud-RAN is one of the key enablers for 5G. Therefore, a smart system is required to detect threats and deal with them. In this paper, we propose a secure network system that is structured into three layers including Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) devices, self-acting robots, and sensor networks. The system operates in two directions: 1) The sensor network tracks the environment and provides raw data to the robots, from here will be transmitted directly to the storage and processing centre or the nearest UAV devices and 2) the administrator or operation centre gives operational instructions to the UAV devices. Based on the analysis of the environmental data on the cloud server, the proposed system can automatically generate warnings and actions in time.

A Survey of System Level Power Management Schemes in the Dark-Silicon Era for Many-Core Architectures

Appears in:

inis 18(15): e5

Authors:

Emmannuel Ofori-Attah, Xiaohang Wang, Michael Opoku Agyeman

Abstract:

Power consumption in Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology has escalated to a point that only a fractional part of many-core chips can be powered-on at a time. Fortunately, this fraction can be increased at the expense of performance through the dark-silicon solution. However, with many-core integration set to be heading towards its thousands, power consumption and temperature increases per time, meaning the number of active nodes must be reduced drastically. Therefore, optimized techniques are demanded for continuous advancement in technology. Existing efforts try to overcome this challenge by activating nodes from different parts of the chip at the expense of communication latency. Other efforts on the other hand employ run-time power management techniques to manage the power performance of the cores trading-off performance for power. We found out that, for a significant amount of power to saved and high temperature to be avoided, focus should be on reducing the power consumption of all the on-chip components. Especially, the memory hierarchy and the interconnect. Power consumption can be minimized by, reducing the size of high leakage power dissipating elements, turning-off idle resources and integrating power saving materials.

Scope

Along with the fast development of computer technologies, e.g., ubiquitous computing, cloud computing and cyber-physical system, all kinds of networks (e.g., control network, communication network, sensor network, body area network, social network, opportunistic network, cloud-based network, etc.) …

Along with the fast development of computer technologies, e.g., ubiquitous computing, cloud computing and cyber-physical system, all kinds of networks (e.g., control network, communication network, sensor network, body area network, social network, opportunistic network, cloud-based network, etc.) appeared and were applied in large-scale factories, including a lot of traditional and new industries, e.g., textile industry, coal industry, mining industry, steel industry, machinery industry, petrochemical industry, and biomedical industry, etc. Assisted by various industrial networks, automation in industry can reduce cost greatly because it takes advantage of control systems and information technologies to optimize productivity in the production of goods and delivery of services. However, the industrial environment is dynamic and harsh usually, including extreme temperature, humidity, electromagnetic interference and vibration, which proposed specific requirements to intelligent industrial systems under certain circumstances. All these highlight the criticality of the design, analysis and implementation of intelligent industrial systems.

more
