Hudson</b></p> <p data-p-id="26478db11a74b3c8675f463fee30cba7"><i><br></i></p> <p data-p-id="d6b97ec8c090ef0f22a279c93486615a"><i>In this excerpt Ammon-shur tells his Children Balashi, Etana and Hili about the origin of the name of his oldest son, Etana. Ammon's wife Silili also adds occasional commentary. </i></p> <p data-p-id="f90f5211320f1710a6f346980e1a622b">"Etana is named for our ancestor, one of the great kings from the past," Ammon said.</p> <p data-p-id="9f25bfd3a9fade301e5dc1b4934b42bf">"So he was just a normal king, not someone who was an amazing warrior and wise and kind and all?" Balashi clarified.</p> <p data-p-id="5c688d1c67768b506f71e2b851b888ac">"Haven't I told you the story of King Etana?" Ammon asked, surprised.</p> <p data-p-id="fcf065a8cb2f051ed5d5565f9c874a88">"I don't think so," Balashi said.</p> <p data-p-id="df9212a647c26c1a451a1914ccfc41db">Silili groaned. "You're not going to bore us all with that stupid old tale, are you?" </p> <p data-p-id="2c780256d9378ed0c53918ff175c3975">"It is anything but boring," Ammon replied, offended.</p> <p data-p-id="7a08d6d54677ef1db7a29a2e3d30653a">Silili snorted. "Well, if you guys don't want to hear it..." Ammon said, trailing off.</p> <p data-p-id="0f5ce8a7504a67b991d1c2ab79a4212e">"I want to hear it, Daddy!" Balashi insisted.</p> <p data-p-id="bc1d87285cf91b5453adabb593049507">"Well, long ago there was a great eagle that lived in the tallest tree at the peak of a great mountain..." Ammon began.</p> <p data-p-id="d265540e629ecfd0f9d616d0ebee674a">"What kind of tree?" Balashi wanted to know.</p> <p data-p-id="bd04a66fb5d142a1a930df523d505dfa">"Umm, a cedar tree," Ammon improvised. "At the base of the cedar tree there lived a serpent..."</p> <p data-p-id="be70b716174b9f34ea5eded8aa5fff70">"What kind of serpent?" Balashi asked.</p> <p data-p-id="0857674fa32949ccab65af9bc351a9c2">"Let's see, it must have been a rat snake," Ammon replied. "The eagle didn't like the rat snake and was determined to drive it off. He dove at the snake and tried to attack it whenever he saw it, but the snake was too quick and clever for the eagle and he always darted under a rock or bush whenever the eagle attacked. One day while Utu was driving his sun chariot overhead, he looked down and saw the eagle stooping at the snake. He decided to go and find out why the eagle was molesting the serpent. The eagle told Utu that he needed to drive the serpent away so that his wife could lay her eggs without fear that the serpent would eat them up."</p> <p data-p-id="36ca3fe8d3cf4a2fd665b35f414d7212">"Do eagles really get married?" Balashi asked. </p> <p data-p-id="222d0c2fb190782f3126224d131e85a1">"No, stupid, they're just animals," Etana said derisively.</p> <p data-p-id="3f6a94ca8916a2c1f16daeca345778b5">"Eagles court each other and marry just like men," Ammon contradicted. "They gather in the skies and have contests of daring and bravery to show who is the most worthy. Sometimes they grasp claws and spiral toward the earth, spinning and fighting until the most cowardly releases his grip and flees."</p> <p data-p-id="2d948c524fe120339f417c6c52491ec8">"How many of the bravest splatter themselves on the ground?" Silili asked.</p> <p data-p-id="70638fe3c032ca01d7b3daebea03740f">"Only the ones who are both brave and foolish," Ammon said. "The clever and brave ones never splatter. They can judge down to the last second when to release their foe. The women among the eagles marry the bravest and cleverest. Anyway, Utu thought that the eagle had a valid concern. Utu asked the serpent why he remained at the base of the tree when the eagle clearly wanted him gone. 'Because the eagle wants me gone, I must stay', the serpent said. 'I have sworn to always fight tyranny wherever I find it, and the eagle has no right to command me either to go or to stay'. Well, Utu thought that the serpent had spoken well, so he decided to create peace between the two of them. He asked each to swear by his sacred honor never to harm or in any way molest the other. This they agreed to do."</p> <p data-p-id="0ca25ec04f4d619b05bc059c0e656b88">"Did they snake have a wife?" Ammon's wife Silili also adds occasional commentary. </i></p>\n<p data-p-id=\"f90f5211320f1710a6f346980e1a622b\">"Etana is named for our ancestor, one of the great kings from the past," Ammon said.</p>\n<p data-p-id=\"9f25bfd3a9fade301e5dc1b4934b42bf\">"So he was just a normal king, not someone who was an amazing warrior and wise and kind and all?" Balashi clarified.</p>\n<p data-p-id=\"5c688d1c67768b506f71e2b851b888ac\">"Haven't I told you the story of King Etana?" Ammon asked, surprised.</p>\n<p data-p-id=\"fcf065a8cb2f051ed5d5565f9c874a88\">"I don't think so," Balashi said.</p>\n<p data-p-id=\"df9212a647c26c1a451a1914ccfc41db\">Silili groaned. "You're not going to bore us all with that stupid old tale, are you?" </p>\n<p data-p-id=\"2c780256d9378ed0c53918ff175c3975\">"It is anything but boring," Ammon replied, offended.</p>\n<p data-p-id=\"7a08d6d54677ef1db7a29a2e3d30653a\">Silili snorted. "Well, if you guys don't want to hear it..." Ammon said, trailing off.</p>\n<p data-p-id=\"0f5ce8a7504a67b991d1c2ab79a4212e\">"I want to hear it, Daddy!" Balashi insisted.</p>\n<p data-p-id=\"bc1d87285cf91b5453adabb593049507\">"Well, long ago there was a great eagle that lived in the tallest tree at the peak of a great mountain..." Ammon began.</p>\n<p data-p-id=\"d265540e629ecfd0f9d616d0ebee674a\">"What kind of tree?" Balashi wanted to know.</p>\n<p data-p-id=\"bd04a66fb5d142a1a930df523d505dfa\">"Umm, a cedar tree," Ammon improvised. "At the base of the cedar tree there lived a serpent..."</p>\n<p data-p-id=\"be70b716174b9f34ea5eded8aa5fff70\">"What kind of serpent?" Balashi asked.</p>\n<p data-p-id=\"0857674fa32949ccab65af9bc351a9c2\">"Let's see, it must have been a rat snake," Ammon replied. "The eagle didn't like the rat snake and was determined to drive it off. He dove at the snake and tried to attack it whenever he saw it, but the snake was too quick and clever for the eagle and he always darted under a rock or bush whenever the eagle attacked. One day while Utu was driving his sun chariot overhead, he looked down and saw the eagle stooping at the snake. He decided to go and find out why the eagle was molesting the serpent. The eagle told Utu that he needed to drive the serpent away so that his wife could lay her eggs without fear that the serpent would eat them up."</p>\n<p data-p-id=\"36ca3fe8d3cf4a2fd665b35f414d7212\">"Do eagles really get married?" Balashi asked. </p>\n<p data-p-id=\"222d0c2fb190782f3126224d131e85a1\">"No, stupid, they're just animals," Etana said derisively.</p>\n<p data-p-id=\"3f6a94ca8916a2c1f16daeca345778b5\">"Eagles court each other and marry just like men," Ammon contradicted. "They gather in the skies and have contests of daring and bravery to show who is the most worthy. Sometimes they grasp claws and spiral toward the earth, spinning and fighting until the most cowardly releases his grip and flees."</p>\n<p data-p-id=\"2d948c524fe120339f417c6c52491ec8\">"How many of the bravest splatter themselves on the ground?" Silili asked.</p>\n<p data-p-id=\"70638fe3c032ca01d7b3daebea03740f\">"Only the ones who are both brave and foolish," Ammon said. "The clever and brave ones never splatter. They can judge down to the last second when to release their foe. The women among the eagles marry the bravest and cleverest. Anyway, Utu thought that the eagle had a valid concern. Utu asked the serpent why he remained at the base of the tree when the eagle clearly wanted him gone. 'Because the eagle wants me gone, I must stay', the serpent said. 'I have sworn to always fight tyranny wherever I find it, and the eagle has no right to command me either to go or to stay'. Well, Utu thought that the serpent had spoken well, so he decided to create peace between the two of them. He asked each to swear by his sacred honor never to harm or in any way molest the other.
