It's a very ancient city, must be, for you can visit the cave where Abraham was born. Around it a complex (the Göl Basi or lake shore complex) has sprung up, with an artificial lake, a series of mosques and other religious buildings, and a pleasant park. In the artificial lake are masses of fish, that you are supposed to feed. The result of throwing some feed in the water is spectacular: a whirlpool of large fish will appear. Above the Göl Basi is the "acropolis" with the ruins of Roman temples, a fort, that sort of thing. The view is marvellous. The city has a somewhat Arabic atmosphere (partly because of the desert dress many people wear). In another gallery I present <a href="https://pbase.com/dosseman/harran" target="_blank">Harran</a>, an even older city, to the South, that can easily be reached from Urfa. The desert country between the two cities is barren, but a joy to travel. December 2005 I added some galleries you find at the start of this gallery, about the museum and such. I will sort the whole collection into one later. It may take a while.<br><br>In 2014 I visited nearby <a href="https://pbase.com/dosseman/gobeklitepe" target="_blank" >Göbekli Tepe</a>, where what may be the world's oldest "religious complex" can be seen. <br><br>URFA<br><br><p>Şanlıurfa olarak da bilinen Urfa, eskiden ülkenin çorak olan ama şimdi güneye doğru yeni sulama kanallarının ovaları yeşillendirdiğı bir bölgede yer alan bir şehir. Çok eski bir yer, öyle olmalı, çünkü İbrahim’in doğduğu mağarayı orada ziyaret edebiliyorsunuz. Yakın zamanda, mağaranın çevresinde, içinde yapay bir göl, bir dizi cami ve diğer dini binalar ve hoş bir parkın bulunduğu bir kompleks (Gölbaşı Kompleksi) yapıldı. Yapay gölde beslemeniz gereken birçok balık var. Suya attığınız biraz yiyeceğin yarattığı sonuç görülmeye değer: büyük bir balık girdabı ortaya çıkıyor. Gölbaşı’nın yukarısında, Roma tapınaklarının kalıntıları, bir hisar ve buna benzer şeylerle “acropolis” var. Manzara olağanüstü. Şehirde bir parça Arap atmosferi var (kısmen insanların giydiğı çöl kıyafeti yüzünden). Başka bir galeride, güneye doğru Urfa’dan rahatça ulaşılabilen ve Urfa’dan da eski bir yer olan Harran’ı göstereceğim. Urfa ve Harran arasındaki ıssız kırsal bölge çorak ama orada seyahat etmek keyifli. Aralık 2005’te, bu galerinin başýna müze vs ile ilgili bazı galeriler ekledim.
