and for the record, about half of my good friends are much more conservative than I am. “Elizabeth,” they ask me, “How do you reconcile being overjoyed with the Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage with your Christian faith?”

I remind my conservative Christian friends that in many ways, it was churches that started the movement to recognize gay marriage when they began to conduct non-legally-binding religious commitment ceremonies for same-sex couples decades ago.

“My church doesn’t do that!” my friends exclaim.

“Mine does,” I say. #NotAllChristians. #NotAllChurches.

I’ve never been one to get into a battle of the Bible verses. When the woman who has been my best friend since we were eleven years old asked me, point blank, how I reconciled my pro-gay values with the Biblical view of sexuality, I sent her a link to the Lolcat Bible translation of Leviticus 18:22: “No can has ghey… srsly. srry, but no.”

“You mean this one?” I asked her. Argument derailment achievement unlocked.

It’s a difficult conversation to have, even with people we love dearly.

I know I am never going to change anyone’s mind about whether it is okay, from a spiritual perspective, to be gay and married. Religious conviction isn’t something you can browbeat someone into having, especially when each of you is convinced that the other is mistaken.
Furthermore, the Bible is pretty clear about Christians not fighting amongst ourselves, even if it makes good soundbites for the 24-hour TV news/entertainment industry.

One thing I do believe is that you can never teach anyone anything except by example. #LoveWins has been the hashtag for the weekend, the crowing week for a decades-long struggle in which the pro-gay-rights side has taught us all to accept differences, refrain from judging each other, and seek out ways in which Christians can build community amongst ourselves. Not every Christian believes the exact same thing.
Not every Christian church has the exact same doctrine. We don’t have to agree with each other to still be Christians. We just have to love each other. It’s what binds us together and, through God’s grace, it’s what sets us apart.

Top 7 Questions after Marriage Equality: Q&A with Attorney Jaime Duggan

Johnny Jonte Boucher/LGBTQ Insider Follow @johnnyscritches Email jonteboucher.dmn@gmail.com

Published: June 29, 2015 4:17 pm

About this blog

About This Blog

About LGBTQ Blog

This blog has been created by The Dallas Morning News and is run by a dozen of the most passionate, knowledgeable people we could find within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community.
