<span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>and they plotted<MG4823> together<MG4823> to arrest<MG2902> Jesus<MG2424> covertly<MG1388> and kill<MG615> Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But they were saying<MG3004>, “Not during<MG1722> the festival<MG1859>, otherwise<MG2443, 3361> a riot<MG2351> might occur<MG1096> among<MG1722> the people<MG2992>.” <p class="hdg">The Precious Ointment</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when Jesus<MG2424> was in Bethany<MG963>, at the home<MG3614> of Simon<MG4613> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>the Leper<MG3015>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>a woman<MG1135> came<MG4334> to Him with an alabaster<MG211> vial<MG211> of very<MG927> expensive<MG927> perfume<MG3464>, and she poured<MG2708> it on His head<MG2776> as He was reclining<MG345> <i>at the table.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But the disciples<MG3101> were indignant<MG23> when they saw<MG3708> <i>this,</i> and said<MG3004>, “Why<MG1519, 5101> this<MG3778> waste<MG684>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>For this<MG3778> <i>perfume</i> could<MG1410> have been sold<MG4097> for a high<MG4183> price<MG4183> and <i>the money</i> given<MG1325> to the poor<MG4434>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But Jesus<MG2424>, aware<MG1097> of this, said<MG3004> to them, “Why<MG5101> are you bothering<MG2873, 3930> the woman<MG1135>? For she has done<MG2038b> a good<MG2570> deed<MG2041> for Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>For you always<MG3842> have<MG2192> the poor<MG4434> with you; but you do not always<MG3842> have<MG2192> Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>For when she poured<MG906> this<MG3778> perfume<MG3464> on My body<MG4983>, she did<MG4160> it to prepare<MG1779> Me for<MG1779> burial<MG1779>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Truly<MG281> I say<MG3004> to you, wherever<MG3699, 1437> this<MG3778> gospel<MG2098> is preached<MG2784> in the whole<MG3650> world<MG2889>, what<MG3739> this<MG3778> woman<MG3778> has done<MG4160> will also<MG2532> be told<MG2980> in memory<MG3422> of her.” <p class="hdg">Judas’ Bargain</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> one<MG1520> of the twelve<MG1427>, named<MG3004> Judas<MG2455> Iscariot<MG2469>, went<MG4198> to the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>and said<MG3004>, “What<MG5101> are you willing<MG2309> to give<MG1325> me <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>betray<MG3860> Him to you?” And they set<MG2476> <i>out</i> for him thirty<MG5144b> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>pieces<MG694> of<MG694> silver<MG694>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And from then<MG5119> on he looked<MG2212> for<MG2212> a good<MG2120> opportunity<MG2120> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>betray<MG3860> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>Jesus. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> on the first<MG4413> <i>day</i> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Unleavened<MG106> Bread<MG106> the disciples<MG3101> came<MG4334> to Jesus<MG2424> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>asked<MG3004>, “Where<MG4226> do You want<MG2309> us to prepare<MG2090> for You to eat<MG2068> the Passover<MG3957>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And He said<MG3004>, “Go<MG5217> into the city<MG4172> to a certain<MG1170> man<MG1170>, and say<MG3004> to him, ‘The Teacher<MG1320> says<MG3004>, “My time<MG2540> is near<MG1451>; I am keeping<MG4160> the Passover<MG3957> at your house with My disciples<MG3101>.”’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>The disciples<MG3101> did<MG4160> as Jesus<MG2424> had directed<MG4929> them; and they prepared<MG2090> the Passover<MG3957>. <p class="hdg">The Last Passover</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when evening<MG3798> came<MG1096>, Jesus was reclining<MG345> <i>at the table</i> with the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>twelve<MG1427>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And as they were eating<MG2068>, He said<MG3004>, “Truly<MG281> I say<MG3004> to you that one<MG1520> of you will betray<MG3860> Me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Being deeply<MG4970> grieved<MG3076>, they began<MG757> saying<MG3004> to Him, each<MG1538> one<MG1520>: “Surely<MG3385> it is not I, Lord<MG2962>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And He answered<MG611>, “He who dipped<MG1686> his hand<MG5495> with Me in the bowl<MG5165> is the one<MG3778> who will betray<MG3860> Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>The Son<MG5207> of Man<MG444> is going<MG5217> away<MG5217> just<MG2531a> as<MG2531a> it is written<MG1125> about<MG4012> Him; but woe<MG3759> to that man<MG444> by whom<MG3739> the Son<MG5207> of Man<MG444> is betrayed<MG3860>! It would have been<MG1510> good<MG2570> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>for that man<MG444> if<MG1487> he had not been born<MG1080>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And Judas<MG2455>, who was betraying<MG3860> Him, said<MG3004>, “Surely<MG3385> it is not I, Rabbi<MG4461>?” Jesus *said<MG3004> to him, “You have said<MG3004> <i>it</i> yourself<MG4771>.” <p class="hdg">The Lord’s Supper Instituted</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> while they were eating<MG2068>, Jesus<MG2424> took<MG2983> <i>some</i> bread<MG740>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>after a blessing<MG2127>, He broke<MG2806> <i>it</i> and gave<MG1325> <i>it</i> to the disciples<MG3101>, and said<MG3004>, “Take<MG2983>, eat<MG2068>; this<MG3778> is My body<MG4983>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And when He had taken<MG2983> a cup<MG4221> and given<MG1325> thanks<MG2168>, He gave<MG1325> <i>it</i> to them, saying<MG3004>, “Drink<MG4095> from it, all<MG3956> of you; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>for this<MG3778> is My blood<MG129> of the covenant<MG1242>, which is being poured<MG1632b> out<MG1632b> for many<MG4183> for forgiveness<MG859> of sins<MG266>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>But I say<MG3004> to you, I will not drink<MG4095> of this<MG3778> fruit<MG1079b> of the vine<MG288> from now<MG737> on until<MG2193> that day<MG2250> when<MG3752> I drink<MG4095> it with you, new<MG2537>, in My Father’s<MG3962> kingdom<MG932>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And after singing<MG5214> a<MG5214> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>hymn<MG5214>, they went<MG1831> out<MG1831> to the Mount<MG3735> of Olives<MG1636>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> Jesus<MG2424> *said<MG3004> to them, “You will all<MG3956> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>fall<MG4624> away<MG4624> because<MG1722> of Me this<MG3778> night<MG3571>, for it is written<MG1125>: ‘I WILL STRIKE<MG3960> THE SHEPHERD<MG4166>, AND THE SHEEP<MG4263b> OF THE FLOCK<MG4167> WILL BE SCATTERED<MG1287>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>But after<MG3326> I have been raised<MG1453>, I will go<MG4254> ahead<MG4254> of you to Galilee<MG1056>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>But Peter<MG4074> replied<MG611, 3004> to Him, “<i>Even</i> if<MG1487> they all<MG3956> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>fall<MG4624> away<MG4624> because<MG1722> of You, I will never<MG3763> fall<MG4624> away<MG4624>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Jesus<MG2424> said<MG5346> to him, “Truly<MG281> I say<MG3004> to you that this<MG3778> <i>very</i> night<MG3571>, before<MG4250> a rooster<MG220> crows<MG5455>, you will deny<MG533> Me three<MG5151> times<MG5151>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Peter<MG4074> *said<MG3004> to Him, “Even<MG2579> if<MG2579> I have<MG1163> to die<MG599> with You, I will not deny<MG533> You!” All<MG3956> the disciples<MG3101> said<MG3004> the same<MG3668> thing<MG3668> as<MG2532> well<MG2532>. <p class="hdg">The Garden of Gethsemane</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> Jesus<MG2424> *came<MG2064> with them to a place<MG5564> called<MG3004> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>Gethsemane<MG1068>, and *told<MG3004> His disciples<MG3101>, “Sit<MG2523> here<MG847> while<MG2193> I go<MG565> over<MG565> there<MG1563> and pray<MG4336>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And He took<MG3880> Peter<MG4074> and the two<MG1417> sons<MG5207> of Zebedee<MG2199> with Him, and began<MG757> to be grieved<MG3076> and distressed<MG85>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> He *said<MG3004> to them, “My soul<MG5590> is deeply<MG4036> grieved<MG4036>, to<MG2193> the<MG2193> point<MG2193> of death<MG2288>; remain<MG3306> here<MG5602> and keep<MG1127> watch<MG1127> with Me.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And He went<MG4281> a little<MG3398> beyond<MG4281> <i>them,</i> and fell<MG4098> on His face<MG4383> and prayed<MG4336>, saying<MG3004>, “My Father<MG3962>, if<MG1487> it is possible<MG1415>, let this<MG3778> cup<MG4221> pass<MG3928> from Me; yet<MG4133> not as I will<MG2309>, but as You <i>will.</i>” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And He *came<MG2064> to the disciples<MG3101> and *found<MG2147> them sleeping<MG2518>, and He *said<MG3004> to Peter<MG4074>, “So<MG3779>, you <i>men</i> could<MG2480> not keep<MG1127> watch<MG1127> with Me for one<MG1520> hour<MG5610>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>Keep<MG1127> watching<MG1127> and praying<MG4336>, so<MG2443> that<MG2443> you do not come<MG1525> into<MG1525> temptation<MG3986>; the spirit<MG4151> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>willing<MG4289>, but the flesh<MG4561> is weak<MG772>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>He went<MG565> away<MG565> again<MG3825> a second<MG1208> time<MG1208> and prayed<MG4336>, saying<MG3004>, “My Father<MG3962>, if<MG1487> this<MG3778> <i>cup</i> cannot<MG1410, 3756> pass<MG3928> away<MG3928> unless<MG1437, 3361> I drink<MG4095> <i>from</i> it, Your will<MG2307> be done<MG1096>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>Again<MG3825> He came<MG2064> and found<MG2147> them sleeping<MG2518>, for their eyes<MG3788> were heavy<MG916>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>And He left<MG863> them again<MG3825>, and went<MG565> away<MG565> and prayed<MG4336> a third<MG5154> time<MG5154>, saying<MG3004> the same<MG846> thing<MG3056> once<MG3825> more<MG3825>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> He *came<MG2064> to the disciples<MG3101> and *said<MG3004> to them, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>Are you still<MG3062> sleeping<MG2518> and resting<MG373>? Behold<MG2400>, the hour<MG5610> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>is<MG1448> at<MG1448> hand<MG1448> and the Son<MG5207> of Man<MG444> is being betrayed<MG3860> into the hands<MG5495> of sinners<MG268>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>Get<MG1453> up<MG1453>, let’s go<MG71>; behold<MG2400>, the one who is betraying<MG3860> Me is near<MG1448>!” <p class="hdg">Jesus’ Betrayal and Arrest</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>And while He was still<MG2089> speaking<MG2980>, behold<MG2400>, Judas<MG2455>, one<MG1520> of the twelve<MG1427>, came<MG2064> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>accompanied<MG3326, 846> by a large<MG4183> crowd<MG3793> with swords<MG3162> and clubs<MG3586>, <i>who came</i> from the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and elders<MG4245> of the people<MG2992>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> he who was betraying<MG3860> Him gave<MG1325> them a sign<MG4592> <i>previously,</i> saying<MG3004>, “Whomever<MG3739, 302> I kiss<MG5368>, He is <i>the one;</i> arrest<MG2902> Him.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>And immediately<MG2112> <i>Judas</i> went<MG4334> up<MG4334> to<MG4334> Jesus<MG2424> and said<MG3004>, “Greetings<MG5463>, Rabbi<MG4461>!” and kissed<MG2705> Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>But Jesus<MG2424> said<MG3004> to him, “Friend<MG2083>, <i>do</i> what<MG3739> you have<MG3918b> come<MG3918b> for.” Then<MG5119> they came<MG4334> and laid<MG1911> hands<MG5495> on Jesus<MG2424> and arrested<MG2902> Him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>And behold<MG2400>, one<MG1520> of those<MG3588> who<MG3588> were with Jesus<MG2424> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>reached<MG1614> and drew<MG645> his sword<MG3162>, and struck<MG3960> the slave<MG1401> of the high<MG749> priest<MG749> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>cut<MG851> off<MG851> his ear<MG5621b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> Jesus<MG2424> *said<MG3004> to him, “Put<MG654> your sword<MG3162> back<MG654> into its place<MG5117>; for all<MG3956> those<MG3588> who take<MG2983> up the sword<MG3162> will perish<MG622> by the sword<MG3162>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span>Or<MG2228> do you think<MG1380> that I cannot<MG1410, 3756> appeal<MG3870> to My Father<MG3962>, and He will at once<MG737> put<MG3936> at<MG3936> My disposal<MG3936> more<MG4183> than twelve<MG1427> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>legions<MG3003> of angels<MG32a>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-54.htm"><b>54</b></a></span>How<MG4459> then<MG3767> would the Scriptures<MG1124> be fulfilled<MG4137>, <i>which say</i> that it must<MG1163> happen<MG1096> this<MG3779> way<MG3779>?” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-55.htm"><b>55</b></a></span>At that time<MG5610> Jesus<MG2424> said<MG3004> to the crowds<MG3793>, “Have you come<MG1831> out<MG1831> with swords<MG3162> and clubs<MG3586> to arrest<MG4815> Me as <i>you would</i> against<MG1909> a man<MG3027> inciting<MG3027> a<MG3027> revolt<MG3027>? Every<MG2596> day<MG2250> I used to sit<MG2516> within the temple<MG2413> <i>grounds</i> teaching<MG1321>, and you did not arrest<MG2902> Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-56.htm"><b>56</b></a></span>But all<MG3650> this<MG3778> has taken<MG1096> place<MG1096> so<MG2443> that<MG2443> the Scriptures<MG1124> of the prophets<MG4396> will be fulfilled<MG4137>.” Then<MG5119> all<MG3956> the disciples<MG3101> left<MG863> Him and fled<MG5343>. <p class="hdg">Jesus before Caiaphas</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-57.htm"><b>57</b></a></span>Those<MG3588> who had arrested<MG2902> Jesus<MG2424> led<MG520> Him away<MG520> to Caiaphas<MG2533>, the high<MG749> priest<MG749>, where<MG3699> the scribes<MG1122> and the elders<MG4245> were gathered<MG4863> together<MG4863>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-58.htm"><b>58</b></a></span>But Peter<MG4074> was following<MG190> Him at a distance<MG3113>, as<MG2193> far<MG2193> as<MG2193> the courtyard<MG833> of the high<MG749> priest<MG749>, and he came<MG1525> inside<MG2080> and sat<MG2521> down<MG2521> with the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>officers<MG5257> to see<MG3708> the outcome<MG5056>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-59.htm"><b>59</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and the entire<MG3650> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>Council<MG4892> kept trying<MG2212> to<MG2212> obtain<MG2212> false<MG5577a> testimony<MG5577a> against<MG2596> Jesus<MG2424>, so<MG3704> that<MG3704> they might put<MG2289> Him to<MG2289> death<MG2289>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-60.htm"><b>60</b></a></span>They did not find<MG2147> <i>any,</i> even though many<MG4183> false<MG5577b> witnesses<MG5577b> came<MG4334> forward<MG4334>. But later<MG5305> on two<MG1417> came<MG4334> forward<MG4334>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-61.htm"><b>61</b></a></span>and said<MG3004>, “This<MG3778> man<MG3778> stated<MG5346>, ‘I am<MG1410> able<MG1410> to destroy<MG2647> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>temple<MG3485> of God<MG2316> and to rebuild<MG3618> it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>in three<MG5140> days<MG2250>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-62.htm"><b>62</b></a></span>The high<MG749> priest<MG749> stood<MG450> up<MG450> and said<MG3004> to Him, “Do You offer<MG611> no<MG3762> answer<MG611> for what<MG5101> these<MG3778> men<MG3778> are testifying<MG2649> against<MG2649> You?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-63.htm"><b>63</b></a></span>But Jesus<MG2424> kept<MG4623> silent<MG4623>. And the high<MG749> priest<MG749> said<MG3004> to Him, “I place<MG1844> You under<MG1844> oath<MG1844> by the living<MG2198> God<MG2316>, to tell<MG3004> us whether<MG1487> You are the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>Christ<MG5547>, the Son<MG5207> of God<MG2316>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-64.htm"><b>64</b></a></span>Jesus<MG2424> *said<MG3004> to him, “You have said<MG3004> <i>it</i> yourself. But<MG4133> I tell<MG3004> you, from now<MG737> <i>on</i> you will see<MG3708> the Son<MG5207> of Man<MG444> sitting<MG2521> at the right<MG1188> hand<MG1188> of power<MG1411>, and coming<MG2064> on the clouds<MG3507> of heaven<MG3772>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-65.htm"><b>65</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> the high<MG749> priest<MG749> tore<MG1284> his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ab]</a></span>robes<MG2440> and said<MG3004>, “He has blasphemed<MG987>! What<MG5101> further<MG2089> need<MG5532> do we have<MG2192> of witnesses<MG3144>? See<MG2396>, you have now<MG3568> heard<MG191> the blasphemy<MG988>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-66.htm"><b>66</b></a></span>what<MG5101> do you think<MG1380>?” They answered<MG611>, “He deserves<MG1777> death<MG2288>!” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-67.htm"><b>67</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> they spit<MG1716> in His face<MG4383> and beat<MG2852> Him with<MG2852> their fists<MG2852>; and others<MG3588> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ac]</a></span>slapped<MG4474> Him, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-68.htm"><b>68</b></a></span>and said<MG3004>, “Prophesy<MG4395> to us, You <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ad]</a></span>Christ<MG5547>; who<MG5101> is the one who hit<MG3817> You?” <p class="hdg">Peter’s Denials</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-69.htm"><b>69</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> Peter<MG4074> was sitting<MG2521> outside<MG1854> in the courtyard<MG833>, and a slave<MG3814> woman<MG3814> came<MG4334> to him and said<MG3004>, “You too<MG2532> were with Jesus<MG2424> the Galilean<MG1057>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-70.htm"><b>70</b></a></span>But he denied<MG720> <i>it</i> before<MG1715> them all<MG3956>, saying<MG3004>, “I do not know<MG3609a> what<MG5101> you are talking<MG3004> about.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-71.htm"><b>71</b></a></span>When he had gone<MG1831> out<MG1831> to the gateway<MG4440>, another<MG243> <i>slave woman</i> saw<MG3708> him and *said<MG3004> to those<MG3588> who<MG3588> were there<MG1563>, “This<MG3778> man<MG3778> was with Jesus<MG2424> of Nazareth<MG3480>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-72.htm"><b>72</b></a></span>And again<MG3825> he denied<MG720> <i>it,</i> with an oath<MG3727>: “I do not know<MG3609a> the man<MG444>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-73.htm"><b>73</b></a></span>A little<MG3398> later<MG3326> the bystanders<MG2476> came<MG4334> up<MG4334> and said<MG3004> to Peter<MG4074>, “You really<MG230> are <i>one</i> of them as<MG2532> well<MG2532>, since<MG1063> even<MG2532> the way<MG2981> you talk<MG2981> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ae]</a></span>gives<MG4160> you away<MG1212, 4160>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-74.htm"><b>74</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> he began<MG757> to curse<MG2617a> and swear<MG3660>, “I do not know<MG3609a> the man<MG444>!” And immediately<MG2117> a rooster<MG220> crowed<MG5455>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-75.htm"><b>75</b></a></span>And Peter<MG4074> remembered<MG3403> the statement<MG4487> that Jesus<MG2424> had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[af]</a></span>made<MG3004>: “Before<MG4250> a rooster<MG220> crows<MG5455>, you will deny<MG533> Me three<MG5151> times<MG5151>.” And he went<MG1831> out<MG1831> and wept<MG2799> bitterly<MG4090>.<A name="fn"></a></p><br /><br /><span class="footnotesbot">[a]</span> <span class="fnverse">6</span> I.e., a nickname;
