They were apprehended by Gambian security forces then massacred by members of President Jammeh's hit squad, ‘The Junglers’ on his orders. “We will not rest until we have my father’s body to bury and Jammeh is brought to justice.” In total there were 56 West African migrants who were trying to get to Spain via The Gambia. After being detained by the Gambian security forces, the migrants were divided into groups and turned over to President Jammeh’s hit squad, the ‘Junglers'. Over one week, the ‘Junglers' arbitrarily executed the migrants. Some of the bodies were found by villagers, hacked to pieces in the bush. Only one escaped, a Ghanaian, Martin Kyere who has now become a vocal witness in the campaign to bring Jammeh and his cadre to justice. Witnesses said because the migrants arrived in The Gambia on July 22nd, the anniversary of the 1994 coup in which Yahya Jammeh and a group of young soliders ousted the then president Sir Dawda Jawara, that they thought they were mercenaries attempting to take over the country. The Gambia under the presidency of Yahya Jammeh, the road to justice in the country is still long. During the last five years spent at TRIAL International, I have constantly been impressed by the courage of the women and men I have met, victims of the worst atrocities, that fight so their rights and those of their family are recognized.
