sensor (2652 × 1768 × 3 layers) as used in the Sigma SD14 digital SLR.

The DP1 is a completely new type of camera offering the full spec. and high image quality of a DSLR in the body of a compact camera. It is powered by the 14 megapixel Foveon X3 direct-image-sensor, which can reproduce high definition images rich in gradation and impressive three-dimensional detail.

Editor's Note: Is the Sigma DP1 the digital camera that will revolutionize the consumer digital camera market with its large (but slightly smaller than) APS-sized image sensor? Sony used an APS-sized sensor in its R1, Leica in the M8 and now Sigma shows it can be done quite easily. Two items in the specs of the DP1 are however worrisome and seem to defeat the purpose of using a large image sensor: a maximum aperture of only F4 and a maximum high ISO of only 800 (max. ISO 200 in AUTO Mode, max. ISO 400 in Flash mode). With these specs, can the DP1 really be a useful low-light camera?

Browse our Amazon Store: (US) | (UK) | (CAN)

January 31, 2008

Kodak Announces New 10-Megapixel High Zoom Digital Camera that Places Advanced Features and High Performance into the Palm of Your Hand

Feature-Packed Compact Camera Makes It Easy to Take Pictures in Almost Any Environment

LAS VEGAS, NV, January 31, 2008 - At the Photo Marketing Association Show (PMA), Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE:EK) today announced the latest addition to its award-winning line of KODAK EASYSHARE Consumer Digital Cameras. This means the camera is able to take pictures at high ISOs that are both detailed and with low noise. [Low noise pictures without the detail is useless.] I doubt this will be introduced during this PMA since this is explosive news and there have been no manufacturer "leaks" to that effect.

Image Stabilization. The real type, either optical or sensor-shift, helps you reduce camera shake and thus blurred pictures. Not really essential if you can hold a camera rock steady or usually use a tripod. However, there is really no reason why a digital camera should not have this handy feature today.

High Sensitivity. This is a scene mode that favours a high ISO so that the camera can select a (hopefully) fast enough shutter speed to help reduce the effects of subject movement. It's good to have but without the capability of capturing low noise (and detailed) images at high ISO, this feature is useful only if you print small sizes and/or display for Web only.

Face Detection. Can sometimes be useful if it is implemented properly (i.e. the camera focuses and measures exposure on the face/eyes).

Smile Detection. Useless.

Self-timer that waits for you. Useless.

Cameras that speak to you and say 'Cheese'. I always want to slap any electronic equipment that speaks -- unless it is a GPS device. More than useless -- a waste of internal memory and CPU power usage.

Scene Modes. Can be useful if they are implemented properly.

Digital Zoom. It's not zoom. You can do the same in your image processing software. Use it if you want but do not use this as a buying criteria.

Megapixels Resolution. Do not use this as a buying criteria anymore for consumer digital cameras (i.e. non-DSLR). Sure there has been improvement in sensor technologies, but so far anything beyond 6-7.1MP has resulted in worse image quality, higher noise, the need for aggressive noise reduction and subsequent loss of image detail. If a manufacturer brags about more megapixels, run.

Keep these points in mind as you read the pre-PMA and PMA press releases.

What do we want? A compact non-DSLR digital camera with excellent image quality, low noise high ISO characteristic, fast wide-angle lens, fast performance, and full exposure flexibility.

Here at Photoxels, we keep the faith and know this will be realized one day when the majority of consumers finally tire of the useless features and seek real image quality in their digital cameras. Already, friends and colleagues complain about the useless features, unfulfilled promises and demand top notch image quality. So a grass-root revolution is slowly in the making. You can help spread the word.

Browse our Amazon Store: (US) | (UK) | (CAN)

January 18, 2008

Today On The Web

Luminous Landscape does a Field Review of the Olympus E-3 DSLR [Specs]:
- 10.1 MP Live MOS
- Pentaprism Viewfinder
- 2.5-in.
