In the context of Acts, the early church was characterized by a spirit of generosity and communal living, as seen in <a href="/acts/2-44.htm">Acts 2:44-45</a>. Selling property was a significant act, indicating a deep commitment to the community and the mission of the church. The act of selling a field, which was a valuable asset, underscores the priority of spiritual over material wealth. This mirrors the teachings of Jesus in passages like <a href="/matthew/6-19.htm">Matthew 6:19-21</a>, where believers are encouraged to store up treasures in heaven rather than on earth. The field could also symbolize the believer's willingness to give up personal security and inheritance for the sake of the gospel.<p><b>brought the money</b><br>This action demonstrates transparency and accountability in the handling of resources within the early church. The act of bringing the money signifies a public declaration of support and trust in the leadership of the apostles. It reflects the communal ethos of the early Christian community, where resources were shared to meet the needs of all members, as described in <a href="/acts/4-32.htm">Acts 4:32-35</a>. This practice is rooted in the Old Testament principles of tithing and offerings, where the faithful were expected to bring their contributions to the temple (<a href="/malachi/3-10.htm">Malachi 3:10</a>). The act of bringing money also symbolizes the transformation of material wealth into spiritual service, aligning with the teachings of stewardship found throughout scripture.<p><b>and laid it at the apostles&#8217; feet</b><br>Laying the money at the apostles' feet is a gesture of submission and respect, acknowledging the authority of the apostles as leaders of the early church. This act signifies the trust placed in the apostles to distribute resources wisely and equitably. It also reflects the practice of offering gifts at the feet of a ruler or leader, a common cultural expression of honor and deference in the ancient world. The apostles, as witnesses of Christ's resurrection and recipients of the Holy Spirit, were seen as stewards of the church's mission. This act of laying money at their feet is reminiscent of the submission to Christ's authority, as seen in <a href="/philippians/2-10.htm">Philippians 2:10</a>, where every knee bows at the name of Jesus. It also prefigures the ultimate submission of all things under Christ's feet, as prophesied in <a href="/psalms/110.htm">Psalm 110:1</a> and affirmed in <a href="/1_corinthians/15-27.htm">1 Corinthians 15:27</a>.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/b/barnabas.htm">Barnabas (Joseph)</a></b><br>A Levite from Cyprus, known for his generosity and encouragement. In the original polity of Israel the Levites had cities and land in common, but no private property (<a href="/context/numbers/18-20.htm" title="And the LORD spoke to Aaron, You shall have no inheritance in their land, neither shall you have any part among them: I am your part and your inheritance among the children of Israel.">Numbers 18:20-21</a>; <a href="/context/deuteronomy/10-8.htm" title="At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister to him, and to bless in his name, to this day.">Deuteronomy 10:8-9</a>, <span class= "ital">et al.</span>)<span class= "ital">, </span>and depended for their support upon the tithes paid by the people. The case of Jeremiah, however (<a href="/context/jeremiah/32-7.htm" title="Behold, Hanameel the son of Shallum your uncle shall come to you saying, Buy you my field that is in Anathoth: for the right of redemption is your to buy it.">Jeremiah 32:7-12</a>), shows that there was nothing to hinder priest or Levite from becoming the possessor of land by purchase or inheritance. The position of Barnabas's sister Mary shows that she, also, was wealthy, and, though she did not sell her house, she, too, did not call it her own, but gave it up for the public use of the community. The self-chosen poverty of Barnabas led him afterwards to act as St. Paul did in working for his livelihood (<a href="/1_corinthians/9-6.htm" title="Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?">1Corinthians 9:6</a>). It will not be out of place on this first mention of the name of a new disciple to note a few others whose membership of the Church dated probably from this period; Mnason, the "old disciple" of <a href="/acts/21-16.htm" title="There went with us also certain of the disciples of Caesarea, and brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus, an old disciple, with whom we should lodge.">Acts 21:16</a>, of Cyprus, and probably, therefore, a friend of Barnabas; Andronicus and Junia (or, more probably, <span class= "ital">Junias, </span>as a man's name), in some sense kinsmen of St. Paul, who were "in Christ" before him (<a href="/romans/16-7.htm" title="Salute Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen, and my fellow-prisoners, who are of note among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me.">Romans 16:7</a>), and whom we find afterwards at Rome; the seven who in <a href="/acts/6-5.htm" title="And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:">Acts 6:5</a> are prominent enough to be chosen as representatives of the Hellenistic members of the Church; Agabus (<a href="/acts/11-28.htm" title="And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.">Acts 11:28</a>), Judas, and Silas (<a href="/acts/15-32.htm" title="And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brothers with many words, and confirmed them.">Acts 15:32</a>). The last three, however, as being "prophets," may have been among the number of the Seventy; and, possibly, if we follow a fairly early tradition, Stephen and Philip among the Seven. (See Note on <a href="/luke/10-1.htm" title="After these things the LORD appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, where he himself would come.">Luke 10:1</a>.) We again note the absence of any measure of the interval between the events of this chapter and the history that follows. The picture of the peaceful expansion of the Church's life implies, probably, as in <a href="/context/acts/2-41.htm" title="Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added to them about three thousand souls.">Acts 2:41-47</a>, one of several months. . . . <div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/acts/4.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 37.</span> - <span class="accented">A</span> <span class="accented">field</span> for <span class="accented">land</span>, A.V. <p> <p> <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/acts/4-37.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Greek</div><span class="word">sold</span><br /><span class="grk">&#960;&#969;&#955;&#942;&#963;&#945;&#962;</span> <span class="translit">(p&#333;l&#275;sas)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Aorist Participle Active - Nominative Masculine Singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/greek/strongs_4453.htm">Strong's 4453: </a> </span><span class="str2">To sell, exchange, barter.
