Dolan resumed his duties in Milwaukee on Tuesday, a day after his introduction as the future archbishop and likely cardinal of New York.</p><p>In successive interviews on Tuesday, Dolan spoke on a broad range of issues, from his admiration for the people of Milwaukee to the challenges ahead in New York, from the traits he hopes to see in a successor to the local church's handling of the sex abuse scandal.</p><p>Dolan said the church has made significant progress on addressing the scandal but that much work remains.</p><p>"Does it haunt me? Yes it does. And I'm not afraid to admit that," said Dolan, who called the issue the most challenging of his tenure in Milwaukee.</p><p>"We're nowhere near to admitting that, thanks be to God, we've got this behind us," he said. "And we should be glad that we can't say that. Because it's the kind of thing that is necessitating the vigilance&ensp;.&ensp;.&ensp;.&ensp; to see that it never happens again."</p><p>After weeks of mounting speculation, Pope Benedict XVI on Monday named Dolan to succeed retiring Cardinal Edward M. Egan of New York.</p><p>Dolan resumed a busy if less glamorous schedule Tuesday, a day after concelebrating Mass at New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral, and making the rounds of the city, including the United Nations and ground zero.</p><p>Back in Milwaukee, Dolan hit a slate of committee meetings; began preparing for his last Lenten season in Wisconsin, which begins today with Ash Wednesday; and held the first of what are likely to be many farewells to staff, according to archdiocesan spokeswoman Julie Wolf.</p><p>"He wanted to tell them this won't be the last time we'll get together," said Wolf. "There will be other occasions to say goodbye."</p><p>Dolan, who spent much of Monday in the media spotlight in New York, offered brief one-on-ones with successive reporters in Milwaukee on Tuesday. Among the topics he took up:</p><p>• Dolan spoke of his fondness for Milwaukee, his sadness in leaving and the excitement of the challenges ahead.</p><p>"I'm very comfortable here. I love it. I feel close to the people," he said</p><p>"On the other hand, I have to admit a great sense of exhilaration and hope. If you feel driven like I hope I do, to serve with generosity and fidelity, all you can do is say that this is an invitation to do that on an even wider scale."</p><p>• Dolan declined to identify any prospective successors, but said it would likely be a sitting bishop. Traits he'd like to see: energetic and hard working, a good administrator, and someone who can listen.</p><p>"For the first year, you just listen and shake hands, and you show up and you read things and you earn people's trust. So to have a man who has that as part of his wiring, I think would be a good thing."</p><p>Dolan said he's confident local Catholics will welcome his successor as they did him in 2002.</p><p>"They know deep down that it's not about Dolan&ensp;.&ensp;.&ensp;.&ensp;that bishops come and go."
