Due to its capacity of 900 students,<sup id="cite_ref-FairmontHeightshistoryasof2005_3-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FairmontHeightshistoryasof2005-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> it was one of the four largest senior high schools in Prince George's County; the others were <a href="/wiki/Bladensburg_High_School" title="Bladensburg High School">Bladensburg</a>, <a href="/wiki/Northwestern_High_School_(Hyattsville,_Maryland)" title="Northwestern High School (Hyattsville, Maryland)">Northwestern</a>, and <a href="/wiki/Suitland_High_School" title="Suitland High School">Suitland</a>. James Gholson, previously the first principal of the Phoenix School in Virginia, was the first principal, selected by PGCPS supervisor of Negro schools Doswell E. Brooks. Gholson in turn selected the black teachers that he believed would provide the best educational experience to his students; all of the teachers were black at the time.<sup id="cite_ref-Wynter_4-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Wynter-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> </p><p>The school was originally named after the nearby town of <a href="/wiki/Fairmount_Heights,_Maryland" title="Fairmount Heights, Maryland">Fairmount Heights</a>. The name of the school differs slightly from the name of the town, as it is missing a "u". This is because of a mistake a contractor made when constructing the sign for the town's elementary school in 1934. When the high school was created, it kept the same spelling as the elementary school.<sup id="cite_ref-pg_journal_6-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-pg_journal-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> According to Leon Wynter of <i><a href="/wiki/The_Washington_Post" title="The Washington Post">The Washington Post</a></i>, during the time the school was <a href="/wiki/De_jure" title="De jure">de jure</a> segregated and during the first four years of post-formal desegregation, until the federal government asked PGCPS to change the attendance boundaries in 1969, "Fairmont Heights thrived in separate but equal isolation for 19 years, developing strong roots in the neighborhoods of Fairmont Heights, <a href="/wiki/Capitol_Heights,_Maryland" title="Capitol Heights, Maryland">Capitol Heights</a> and Beaver Heights."<sup id="cite_ref-Wynter_4-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Wynter-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> In the era of legally required segregation it served black students in western Prince George's County, <a href="/wiki/Accokeek,_Maryland" title="Accokeek, Maryland">Accokeek</a>, <a href="/wiki/Bowie,_Maryland" title="Bowie, Maryland">Bowie</a>, <a href="/wiki/Laurel,_Maryland" title="Laurel, Maryland">Laurel</a>, <a href="/wiki/Takoma_Park,_Maryland" title="Takoma Park, Maryland">Takoma Park</a>, and other communities;<sup id="cite_ref-FairmontHeightshistoryasof2005_3-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FairmontHeightshistoryasof2005-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> this meant it served about 66% of the PGCPS black high school students.<sup id="cite_ref-Wynter_4-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Wynter-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> </p><p>The enrollment increased to 1,900 by 1960; it had portable buildings for the extra students. It was relieved by the opening of Mary McLeod Bethune Junior High School in 1961, and Fairmont Heights became grades 9-12 only; in 1962 it became grades 10-12 only.<sup id="cite_ref-FairmontHeightshistoryasof2005_3-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FairmontHeightshistoryasof2005-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> The school district desegregated after the <a href="/wiki/Civil_Rights_Act_of_1964" title="Civil Rights Act of 1964">Civil Rights Act</a> was passed in 1964; it began having particular attendance boundaries for all races. Fairmont Heights High's first race-neutral attendance boundary was the smallest in size in the school district, totaling 3 square miles (7.8 km<sup>2</sup>). The enrollment was majority African-American.<sup id="cite_ref-FairmontHeightshistoryasof2005_3-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FairmontHeightshistoryasof2005-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> </p><p>Gholson resigned as principal in 1968.<sup id="cite_ref-Wynter_4-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Wynter-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Around 1969 Fairmount Heights had about 1,300 students. That year the school district received a request from the federal government to have more racial balance in the school attendance boundaries.<sup id="cite_ref-Wynter_4-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Wynter-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> The district adopted a desegregation plan in 1972, after the <a href="/wiki/United_States_Department_of_Health,_Education,_and_Welfare" class="mw-redirect" title="United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare">United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare</a> (HEW) persuaded the district to do so, so white students in other areas of the county could go to Fairmont Heights High.<sup id="cite_ref-FairmontHeightshistoryasof2005_3-6" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FairmontHeightshistoryasof2005-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Instead enrollment dropped to 713 because white parents chose not to send their children to Fairmont Heights, preferring private schools or other public schools.<sup id="cite_ref-Wynter_4-6" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Wynter-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> </p><p>The Fairmont Heights community protested against two unsuccessful attempts to close the school, one of which would have converted the building into a performing arts facility. The two proposals occurred in 1972 and 1974, and Rodney Johnson, previously on the PGCPS board, and A. James Golato, then on the PGCPS, both wrote the performing arts proposal. According to Fairmont High Class of 1970 alumna and teacher Deborah Franklin, "There's a lot of emotion tied up in the school" and members of the Fairmont Heights area feared that the conversion "would just shut out the people in the community."<sup id="cite_ref-Wynter_4-7" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Wynter-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> </p><p>The school temporarily moved to the Kent Junior High School building after a January 4, 1980 fire damaged the building; the damages were estimated to be $500,000. Between 1980 and 1983 Fairmont Heights again received 9th grade students. In August 1983 the school moved back to the permanent facility, which received a $8,400,000 renovation.
