She first sketches out Christophe’s sensational life story—born in Grenada, he went from a radical in search of a revolution (fighting briefly in the American one) to a commander of Haiti’s revolutionary forces who crowned himself king—then pokes holes in the myth. Often presented as a cautionary example of revolutionaries’ penchant for turning into dictators, Christophe instead emerges in Daut’s telling as a complex figure in a world gripped by radical transformation. The dramatic hook of her narrative is Christophe’s 1802 defection, when he was briefly wooed by Napoleon’s promise that Haiti would be spared from reenslavement if it rejoined the empire. Because of Christophe’s lapse (“a single bad decision, ricocheting like scattershot,” Daut calls it), France was able to pursue a “war of extermination,” committing atrocities on a scale “it might be hard for the modern reader to contemplate.” The violence, however, reunified the revolutionaries, hardening their resolve. Moreover, according to Daut, as much as Christophe’s kinghood was a betrayal of the revolution’s principles, it was also a safeguard of independence in an era of revanchist monarchy; by facing down the restored Bourbon monarch king-to-king, Christophe proved that Haitians were not “playthings.” The result is an expertly told and richly detailed reexamination of the revolutionary period. <em>(Jan.)</em> <p> <review-date>Reviewed on 12/13/2024 | </review-date> <a href="/9780593316160">Details & Permalink</a> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="more-less full-width-heading" data-jsclass="responsiveWrapper" data-responsive-scales="small" data-follow="#wrapper" data-constrain="width" data-row="275486" onclick="revealReview(this);"><ml>show more</ml></div> <div class="full-width-heading-placeholder"> </div> </div> <div class="cateogry-reviews-separator"> </div> <div class="category-reviews-item"> <cite> Before You Climb Any Higher: Valley Wisdom for Mountain Dreams </cite> <h4> Jonathan McReynolds. He contrasts this achievement-obsessed “mountain mindset” with a “less glamorous but sustaining” valley mindset, in which one finds the “restoration” and “perspective-keeping” needed to live a full life. Tips for accessing the valley mindset include cultivating gratitude, serving others, and connecting with God via prayer, Bible study, or fasting. Despite hammering home his central metaphor a bit too hard in somewhat stilted prose (“Don’t do the climb without doing the time!”), McReynolds’s model of how to balance faith and professional aspirations gains credibility thanks to his candid personal anecdotes and refreshing sense of self-awareness. Christians who want to chase their dreams without forsaking their faith should take note. <em>(Feb.)</em> <p> <review-date>Reviewed on 12/13/2024 | </review-date> <a href="/9781400338870">Details & Permalink</a> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="more-less full-width-heading" data-jsclass="responsiveWrapper" data-responsive-scales="small" data-follow="#wrapper" data-constrain="width" data-row="275423" onclick="revealReview(this);"><ml>show more</ml></div> <div class="full-width-heading-placeholder"> </div> </div> <div class="cateogry-reviews-separator"> </div> <div class="category-reviews-item"> <cite> <img src="/images/star3.gif" width=16 height=20 border=0 style="vertical-align:top;"> My Country, Africa: Autobiography of the Black Pasionaria </cite> <h4> Andrée Blouin, with Jean Mackellar. The author was born in 1921 in what is today known as the Central African Republic to an African teenager and a French businessman, and raised in a home for abandoned biracial children. She details years of abuse meted out by nuns who ran the home, and describes how racism plagued her intimate relationships with white men. But it wasn’t until the 1946 death of her two-year-old son, who was denied malaria drugs because he was one-quarter African, that Blouin spoke out publicly against racism. She made her first foray into revolutionary politics in Guinea, where a chance encounter with Congolese leaders fighting Belgian rule thrust her into the center of Africa’s mid-20th-century independence movements. Blouin gives a thrilling account of the revolutionary fervor that swept the continent and its crucial interplay with gender politics: “I saw that one could not separate the problem of the African continent’s resources from the problems of African women,” she writes, arguing that women needed to be “freed from [their] role of servitude” and join together with men in the name of independence. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the intersection of race, gender, and freedom. <em>(Jan.)</em> <p> <review-date>Reviewed on 12/13/2024 | </review-date> <a href="/9781839768712">Details & Permalink</a> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="more-less full-width-heading" data-jsclass="responsiveWrapper" data-responsive-scales="small" data-follow="#wrapper" data-constrain="width" data-row="275418" onclick="revealReview(this);"><ml>show more</ml></div> <div class="full-width-heading-placeholder"> </div> </div> <div class="cateogry-reviews-separator"> </div> <div class="category-reviews-item"> <cite> Poor Artists: A Quest Into the Art World </cite> <h4> Gabrielle de la Puente and Zarina Muhammad. Taking the form of a novel, the story follows Quest Talukdar, a British South Asian artist who’s finally found some traction by making bizarre pieces that she hates, but knows will sell (for example, a plaster cast of rotting fruit). Quest has trippy conversations with “a pile of leftover art” that serves as the head of an art university, psychologist Abraham Maslow, creator of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (“If an artist is not able to make art... we can expect discontent and restlessness in the individual”), and 19th-century French painter Gustave Courbet (recast here as an Uber driver). All the while, Quest struggles to create meaningful work without being overwhelmed by the harsh economic realities of the art world—exorbitantly priced studio spaces, scarce funding opportunities, and competition with rich kids who can pay their way into galleries. Quest’s recognition of the absurdity of her situation (an ex boyfriend accuses her of being “married to the idea that being an artist is a job”) is accompanied by her dawning realization that creativity necessarily defies logic (“Art is lawless,” a friend tells her, “and it has to remain so in order to open up new channels of understanding”). The result is a sharp and original take on the privilege and passion of the modern creative economy. <em>(Nov.)</em> <p> <review-date>Reviewed on 12/13/2024 | </review-date> <a href="/9783791380216">Details & Permalink</a> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="more-less full-width-heading" data-jsclass="responsiveWrapper" data-responsive-scales="small" data-follow="#wrapper" data-constrain="width" data-row="275405" onclick="revealReview(this);"><ml>show more</ml></div> <div class="full-width-heading-placeholder"> </div> </div> <div class="cateogry-reviews-separator"> </div> <div class="category-reviews-item"> <cite> Ingrained: The Making of a Craftsman </cite> <h4> Callum Robinson. Weaving in vignettes from his 1980s childhood, memories of woodworking with his father, and rapturous passages about his love of the natural world, Robinson covers the daily grind of his craft while meditating on the spiritual implications of creating work that’s likely to outlast him. The narrative hinges on the threat Robinson’s woodworking firm faced after it lost a significant client, recounting how Robinson, his wife, and his employees pivoted to open a furniture store. Much of the book luxuriates in the physical details of Robinson’s craft, but he has more than labor on his mind: in writing about the process of building a chair, for example, then considering how that chair might be used by the people who purchase it, Robinson assigns deep meaning to the careful construction of objects in a fast-paced world that often prizes cheaper alternatives. Robinson’s lyrical prose (“The low winter sun, as much a stranger as we were to the windowless porch, followed us meekly inside”) and dedication to his craft will appeal to artisans and appreciatorss of all stripes. <em>Agent: Rebecca Gradinger, UTA. Grace’s past work as a circus tightrope walker, along with her dance skills, give her the balance and élan she needs to work on the skycraper. Patrick’s team of four are in on the subterfuge and counting on Grace to pull it off, because if one team member is injured, the whole team is out of work. Then a near tragedy occurs on the job site and Grace is faced with an ethical dilemma, in which doing the right thing would force her to reveal her identity. The plot tips into melodrama, but Tizzard evocatively depicts the workers’ camaraderie and the breathtaking dangers they face. Readers will love this tale of derring-do. <em>(Jan.)</em> <p> <review-date>Reviewed on 12/13/2024 | </review-date> <a href="/9781668056943">Details & Permalink</a> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="more-less full-width-heading" data-jsclass="responsiveWrapper" data-responsive-scales="small" data-follow="#wrapper" data-constrain="width" data-row="275393" onclick="revealReview(this);"><ml>show more</ml></div> <div class="full-width-heading-placeholder"> </div> </div> <div class="cateogry-reviews-separator"> </div> <div class="category-reviews-item"> <cite> Tokyo Ever After (Tokyo Ever After #1) </cite> <h4> Emiko Jean. So when she and her best friend find a letter in Hanako’s bedroom, the duo jump at the chance to ferret out Izzy’s dad’s true identity—only to find out he’s the Crown Prince of Japan. Desperate to know her father, Izzy agrees to spend the summer in his home country. But press surveillance, pressure to quickly learn the language and etiquette, and an unexpected romance make her time in Tokyo more fraught than she imagined. Add in a medley of cousins and an upcoming wedding, and Izzy is in for an unforgettable summer. Abrupt switches from Izzy’s perspective to lyrical descriptions of Japan may disrupt readers’ enjoyment, but a snarky voice plus interspersed text conversations and tabloid coverage keep the pages turning in Jean’s (<em>Empress of All Seasons</em>) fun, frothy, and often heartfelt duology starter. Stuck in a Los Angeles home with constantly arguing parents and her sensitive nine-year-old brother Ronak, Gujarati American Sonali, 11, tries to make sense of her world through the Hindi movies she’s seen all her life. Ever since an earnest public attempt five years ago to stop her parents’ fighting led to widespread embarrassment in front of family, Sonali has resolved to hide her emotions and do her best to ignore her parents’ arguments. But her efforts prove futile when her parents decide to try the “nesting” method of separation, where they take turns living in the house with Sonali and Ronak. The contemporary narrative takes an entertaining fabulist turn as Sonali’s life begins to transform into a Bollywood movie, with everything she feels and thinks made apparent through her “Bollywooditis.” Sonali’s first-person perspective is sympathetic as she navigates friendship and family drama, and Kelkar successfully infuses a resonant narrative with “filmi magic,” offering a tale with universal appeal through an engaging cultural lens. Now 15, Justice believes the event was merely a dream. One night, however, their father shatters their comfortable lifestyles when he forces the family—Justice, Faith, their younger brother Henry, and their constantly medicated, distant mother—into a locked carriage that takes them to a shadowy mansion. Justice’s discovery that the Faerie have invaded the human world and are targeting her family gains further urgency when she learns that her parents are on opposite sides of the conflict. Together, the Kasric siblings—including older brothers Benedict and Joshua—must find a way to save their family. While characters lack depth at times, and insufficient historical details don’t fully evoke the Victorian setting, Klaver’s (the Supernatural Case Files of Sherlock Holmes series) rich, lyrical descriptions augment the fantastical source material in this engaging series starter. They swore never to discuss the terrible events that followed, but when the girls, now 17, return to the camp as counselors-in-training from their hometown of Lewisburg, Pa., that proves easier said than done. Someone begins sabotaging camp activities, and ominous—and increasingly public—threats appear, referencing that fateful summer. The only other person who knows Esme and Kayla’s secret is a local girl named Lillian Campbell, whom they left to fend for herself that night in the woods. They’re loath to voice their suspicions of revenge lest they get in trouble or look bad in front of hunky fellow counselors Jake and Olly, but as events escalate, they realize they may not have a choice. Narrating from Esme’s increasingly apprehensive first-person perspective, Preston (<em>The Twin</em>) pays homage to classic summer camp slasher films. The underdeveloped, predominantly white cast relies heavily on stereotype, and the clichéd tormenter’s motive feels unearned, but horror fans will likely appreciate this paranoia-fueled tale’s gruesome, shocking close.
